The Effect of Conventional Open Thyroidectomy on Clinical Results and Respiratory Function Tests in Multinodular Goitre.

AIM: The primary aim of our study was to measure the effect of conventional open thyroidectomy performed for patients with multinodular goit … er surgery. Forced expiratory volume in 0.5 seconds forced expiratory volume in 1 second and forced vital capacity values in pulmonary function test (PFT) measurements were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 55 patients, 42 females and 13 males, mean age 49.54 ± 13.6 years, were included in the study. Although there was a significant decrease in clinical symptoms ca …

Airway Clearance Techniques in Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a respiratory disorder that impairs mucociliary clearance, leading to decreased lung function … was very low. No difference was identified between device-supported ACTs and CCP in terms of forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in 1 second in PCD patients aged 6 to 20 years. CONCLUSION: Device-supported ACTs could be considered alternative treatment options to replace CCP. High quality research is required to confirm this result.

Detection of decline in pulmonary function in patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease using home monitoring in the Netherlands (DecreaSSc): a prospective, observational study.

BACKGROUND: In patients with systemic sclerosis, interstitial lung disease (ILD) is the leading cause of mortality. Early detection of progr … as the κ agreement between home and hospital measurements after 1 year to detect a decline in force vital capacity (FVC) of 5% or more, estimated using separate linear regression analyses for home-based and hospital-based FVC% predicted in individual patients. Previous tuberculosis disease as a risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a cross-sectional analysis of multicountry, population-based studies.

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for COPD in high-income settings are well understood; however, less attention has been paid to contributors of COPD … ncluding COPD (defined as a postbronchodilator forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) below the lower limit of normal). Multivariable regressions with random effects were used to examine the association between previous tuberculosis disease and lung function outcomes. Blood eosinophils associate with reduced lung function growth in adolescent asthmatics.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Some children with asthma have low lung growth, putting them at increased risk for COPD later in life. However, it is currently not clear who will experience this adverse growth pattern. We therefore investigated the predictive role of blood eosinophils as a type 2 inflammation marker in lung growth, focusing on the presence and severity of asthma. METHODS: We investigated blood eosinophils and lung function growth (percentage of predicted values) using linear mixed models in children and adolescents from two longitudinal cohorts. One cohort was hospital-based and co

Does spirometric tests meet the acceptability criteria? Data from a tertiary chest hospital in Turkey.

INTRODUCTION: First step is to evaluate the quality of the test in interpreting spirometries. International societies have defined the acceptability criteria for spirometric tests. With this study, it was aimed to evaluate spirometric tests in terms of compliance with international acceptability criteria and to determine error types. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Spirometric manoeuvres held at a tertiary chest diseases hospital were evaluated as to whether the acceptability criteria of "American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society (ATS/ERS)" guideline were maintained or not. Errors determi

Pregnancy in lymphangioleiomyomatosis: clinical and lung function outcomes in two national cohorts.

Pregnancy in women with lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) has been associated with increased complications and worsening lung function although objective data to advise patients are not available. We assessed lung function and CT scans before and after pregnancy in 16 women with LAM. During the pregnancy, pneumothorax was frequent and mean forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) fell from 77%±19% prepregnancy to 64%±25% predicted and DLCO from 66±26 to 57±26 (both p<0.01). After pregnancy, rates of FEV1 decline were high and 10 patients required sirolimus. Women with LAM, especially with moderate

Adult outcomes of childhood bronchiectasis.

Recent literature has highlighted the importance of transition from paediatric to adult care for children with chronic conditions. Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis is an important cause of respiratory morbidity in low-income countries and in indigenous children from affluent countries; however, there is little information about adult outcomes of childhood bronchiectasis. We reviewed the clinical course of 31 Alaska Native adults 20-40 years of age from Alaska's Yukon Kuskokwim Delta with childhood bronchiectasis. In patients with chronic suppurative lung disease, a diagnosis of bronchiectasi

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of vitamin D deficiency and smoking on lung function and lung function decline. METHODS: A total of 626 men from the Normative Aging Study had 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels measured at three different times between 1984 and 2003 with concurrent spirometry. A retrospective study of nurse-assisted propofol sedation in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis undergoing percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement is standard in the care of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) unable to maintain adequate oral nutrition. This has been performed using conscious sedation with narcotics/benzodiazepines. However, recent studies suggest that propofol sedation is superior for other endoscopic procedures. In addition, endoscopic PEG placement is not recommended for patients with ALS with a forced vital capacity (FVC) <50%. The authors postulated that nurse-administered propofol sedation (NAPS) with the addition of bilevel positive airwa…
