Female Budgerigars Attend Equally to Rhythmic Beat or Repetition, While Humans Prioritize Their Combination.

Rhythm is an essential aspect of human music, typically characterized by temporal regularity of sound events and repetition of rhythmic patterns. One key biological trait for human rhythmic behavior is the ability to entrain movement to sound events, an ability possibly related to vocal production learning. Parrots share both of these crucial traits with humans. Budgerigars in particular can entrain to a beat, and female budgerigars, like humans, prefer rhythmic sounds. What remains unclear is whether this attraction to rhythm is based on the same features that are important in humans. If so,

Independent acoustic variation of the higher- and lower-frequency components of biphonic calls can facilitate call recognition and social affiliation in killer whales.

Each resident-type (R-type) killer whale pod has a set of stereotyped calls that are culturally transmitted from mother to offspring. The functions of particular call types are not yet clearly understood, but it is believed that calls with two independently modulated frequency components (biphonic calls) play an important role in pod communication and cohesion at long ranges. In this study we examined the possible functions of biphonic calls in R-type killer whales. First, we tested the hypothesis that the additional component enhances the potential of a call to identify the family affiliation

Development of the ex vivo laryngeal model of phonation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The direct study of human phonation is limited by the invasive and painful nature of human laryngeal neuromuscular manipulation. As a platform for the study of human phonation, indirect models have been utilized for decades such as animal, cadaveric, and computational. We sought to develop a research method allowing direct scientific control of virtually living larynges to expand our ability to understand human phonation. STUDY DESIGN: Canine and porcine models. METHODS: Nineteen canine larynges were surgically removed and reperfused with progressively adapting methodo

A higher sensory brain region is involved in reversing reinforcement-induced vocal changes in a songbird.

Many animals exhibit flexible behaviors that they can adjust to increase reward or avoid harm (learning by positive or aversive reinforcement). But what neural mechanisms allow them to restore their original behavior (motor program) after reinforcement is withdrawn? One possibility is that motor restoration relies on brain areas that have a role in memorization but no role in either motor production or in sensory processing relevant for expressing the behavior and its refinement. We investigated the role of a higher auditory brain area in the songbird for modifying and restoring the stereotype

What's the buzz? Ultrasonic and sonic warning signals in caterpillars of the great peacock moth (Saturnia pyri).

Caterpillars have many natural enemies and, therefore, have evolved a diversity of antipredator strategies. Most research focuses on those strategies (crypsis, countershading, and warning coloration) targeting visually guided predators. In contrast, defensive sounds, although documented for more than a century, have been poorly studied. We report on a novel form of sound production--chirping--in caterpillars of the common European Great Peacock moth (Saturnia pyri). Chirps are broadband, with dominant peaks ranging between the sonic (3.7 kHz) and ultrasonic (55.1 kHz) and are generated by a ra

Estimated source intensity and active space of the American alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) vocal display.

In this article the results are reported of a study to measure the intensity of the vocal displays of a population of American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis). It was found that the dominant frequencies in air range between 20 and 250 Hz with a source sound pressure level (SPL) of 91-94 dB at 1 m. The active space for the air-borne component is defined by the background and was estimated to be in a range up to 159 m in the 125-200 Hz band. For the water-borne component the dominant frequency range was 20-100 Hz with a source SPL of 121-125 dB at 1 m. The active space in water is define

The influence of olfaction on potentiation and inhibition of ultrasonic vocalization of rat pups.

Twelve-day-old isolated rat pups reduce their rates of ultrasonic vocalization (USV) when an anesthetized adult is placed into the test cage, whether the adult is their dam or an unfamiliar male. USV rates remain very low even after removal of the male (inhibition). However, after removal of the dam, pups greatly increase their rates of USV over their first isolation period (potentiation). USV potentiation can be induced by either an awake, normally behaving dam or by one that is anesthetized. To test the role of olfaction in inhibition and potentiation, PND12 pups were rendered anosmic via in

A dose response study of aggressive behavioral effects of intracerebroventricular injections of carbachol in cats.

In this investigation, quantitative characteristics of vocalization, fighting, biting and convulsions elicited by carbachol injected into the cerebral ventricle of unanesthetized cats have been studied. Fighting, biting and convulsions were dose-dependent and long-lasting, their ED50 values being 0.008 mg, 0.018 mg and 0.047 mg respectively. The value of ED50 for vocalization is less than 0.005 mg. When using small doses the entire aggressive behavior pattern could be divided into its elements (vocalization, fighting, biting); however with larger doses it was not possible to obtain a separatio

Targeted sensory enrichment interventions protect against behavioral and neuroendocrine consequences of early life stress.

Both basic and clinical research support the use of tactile stimulation to rescue several neurobiobehavioral consequences that follow early life stress. Here, using a translational rodent model of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), we tested the individual prophylactic potential of a variety of sensory interventions including tactile (brushing pups with a paint brush to mimic maternal licking), auditory (a simulated lactating rat dam heart beat), and olfactory (a series of aroma therapy scents) stimulation. The NICU model was developed to mimic not only the reduced parental contact that

Unstable maternal environment, separation anxiety, and heightened CO2 sensitivity induced by gene-by-environment interplay.

BACKGROUND: In man, many different events implying childhood separation from caregivers/unstable parental environment are associated with heightened risk for panic disorder in adulthood. Twin data show that the occurrence of such events in childhood contributes to explaining the covariation between separation anxiety disorder, panic, and the related psychobiological trait of CO(2) hypersensitivity. We hypothesized that early interference with infant-mother interaction could moderate the interspecific trait of response to CO(2) through genetic control of sensitivity to the environment. METHODO

Behavioral characterization of bulbar sensorimotor function in a rat model of Alexander disease.

Alexander disease (AxD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) gene and is associated with bulbar sensorimotor impairments including dysphagia, dysphonia, and dysarthria. This study assessed oromotor and laryngeal function in the R237H rat model of AxD compared with wild-type (WT) controls. Rats underwent behavioral assessments of tongue strength and press rate, mastication, swallowing, and ultrasonic vocalizations. Compared with WT controls, the R237H group exhibited significantly reduced tongue force and press rates, with a decline i

Courtship and distress ultrasonic vocalizations are altered in a mouse model of Angelman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a single-gene neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss of function of the maternal copy of the UBE3A gene. Nearly all individuals with AS lack speech, resulting in major impacts on daily life for patients and caregivers. To evaluate new therapies for AS, it is crucial to have a mouse model that characterizes meaningful clinical features. Vocalizations are used in many contexts in mice, including pup retrieval, social interactions, courtship, and distress. Previous work in the Ube3am−/p+ mouse model of AS found abnormalities in the number of ultrasonic vo

The postnatal development of ultrasonic vocalization-associated breathing is altered in glycine transporter 2-deficient mice.

KEY POINTS: Newborn mice produce ultrasonic vocalization to communicate with their mother. The neuronal glycine transporter (GlyT2) is required for efficient loading of synaptic vesicles in glycinergic neurons. Mice lacking GlyT2 develop a phenotype that resembles human hyperekplexia and the mice die in the second postnatal week. In the present study, we show that GlyT2-knockout mice do not acquire adult ultrasonic vocalization-associated breathing patterns. Despite the strong impairment of glycinergic inhibition, they can produce sufficient expiratory airflow to produce ultrasonic vocalizatio

Development of echolocation and communication vocalizations in the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus.

Big brown bats form large maternity colonies of up to 200 mothers and their pups. If pups are separated from their mothers, they can locate each other using vocalizations. The goal of this study was to systematically characterize the development of echolocation and communication calls from birth through adulthood to determine whether they develop from a common precursor at the same or different rates, or whether both types are present initially. Three females and their six pups were isolated from our captive breeding colony. We recorded vocal activity from postnatal day 1 to 35, both when the

Effect of color in rearing and testing environment on the behavior of young domestic chicks.

Young domestic chicks were reared individually in compartments of four different colors and then tested either in a color-preference test with stationary objects (N equals 128) or with a moving stimulus (N equals 128). For each type of test we used four background colors in the test arena. The dependent variables included color preferences, following behavior and emotional responses of the young chicks. The results showed no significant effects of the color of the arena-background in either test situation. The color of the rearing compartment was a significant factor affecting color preference

A critically endangered new species of Dryadobates (Anura: Aromobatidae) from Espírito Santo, Brazil.

We describe a new species of Dryadobates known exclusively from a small (0.384 km²) and shrinking forest fragment between the neighborhoods of Costa Bela and Praia de Capuba, Serra, Espírito Santo, Brazil. In addition to genetic differences, the new species is diagnosed by its small size, white or pale ventral coloration on the thighs in life, white ventral coloration in males in life, posteriorly diffuse ventrolateral stripe in females in life, presence of webbing between toes II and III, and absence of isolated advertisement calls. Progressive habitat loss at the type locality has resulted i

Courtship behaviour in the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis, the New World vector of visceral leishmaniasis.

Courtship behaviour in Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz and Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae) was examined to determine the sequence of behaviours that occur prior to copulation. Courtship consisted of a series of male and female touching and wing-flapping behaviours, with males performing a greater variety of wing-flapping behaviours than previously described. Occurrence of male approach-flapping, semi-circling and female stationary-flapping were all predictors of eventual copulation, and may coincide with the dispersal of pheromones or the production of auditory signals important to courtship. Touching

The evolution of the syrinx: An acoustic theory.

The unique avian vocal organ, the syrinx, is located at the caudal end of the trachea. Although a larynx is also present at the opposite end, birds phonate only with the syrinx. Why only birds evolved a novel sound source at this location remains unknown, and hypotheses about its origin are largely untested. Here, we test the hypothesis that the syrinx constitutes a biomechanical advantage for sound production over the larynx with combined theoretical and experimental approaches. We investigated whether the position of a sound source within the respiratory tract affects acoustic features of th

Development of ultrasonic calls in rat pups follows similar patterns regardless of isolation distress.

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) emitted by rat pups have been extensively studied in the context of isolation from their mother and littermates. The heightened call rate of isolation-induced USVs indicates increased anxiety, whereas other acoustic parameters, such as frequency and call duration, are thought to be useful in reflecting developmental changes, which by weaning have developed into their adult form. However, it is possible that stress can affect the quality as well as the quantity of calls, and that as the pups become more mobile, the effects of the stress may change. Therefore, in

Ecologically-relevant exposure to methylmercury during early development does not affect adult phenotype in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata).

Methylmercury causes behavioural and reproductive effects in adult mammals via early developmental exposure. Similar studies in birds are limited and mostly focussed on aquatic systems, but recent work has reported high blood mercury concentrations in terrestrial, passerine songbirds. We used the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) as a model to explore the long-term effects of early developmental exposure to methylmercury exposure. Chicks were dosed orally with either the vehicle control, 0.0315 µg Hg/g bw/day, or 0.075 µg Hg/g bw/day throughout the nestling period (days 1-21 post-hatching). We
