This retrospective study reviews 39 patients with primary subglottic cancer seen between 1955 and 1988 by the Department of Otolaryngology at Washington University. This number constitutes 1.8% of laryngeal cancer cases diagnosed during this period. Twenty-eight patients (71.8%) had epidermoid cancer, of which 19 (67.9%) had "early" disease (stages I and II), and nine (32.1%) had "advanced" (stages III and IV). Overall 5-year survival was 57.7%. Data were collected from all incident reports of low back injury during 1984-1986 among nursing aides at one hospital and home health aides at two agencies in the Baltimore-Washington area. Respective rates of injury were 5.9/100 FTE's and 15.4/100 FTE's (p < 0.001). A majority of injuries occurred during patient-related, planned activities and without the use of lifting equipment. In North America, tick-borne relapsing fever of humans is most frequently caused by infection with the spirochete Borrelia hermsii. Prior to our investigation, this spirochete was not known to infect dogs although another species, Borrelia turicatae, has been isolated from domestic canids in Florida and Texas. We measured mosquito landing rates on adult and nestling American robins at nests with infrared cameras in Washington, D.C., and Maryland, United States. Mosquitoes landed on nesting robins almost exclusively between dusk and dawn. The mean number of mosquito landings per night was higher for adults (123.3 +/- SE 32.8) than nestlings (37.26 +/- 14.8). The relationship between the timing and outcomes of the Washington Redskins' football games and the frequency of admissions to hospital emergency rooms in northern Virginia is investigated. An OLS time series analysis is conducted, controlling for days of the week, months, years and special holidays for 1988-1989.
