Concordance between radiofrequency echographic multispectrometryand dual X-ray absorptiometry in diagnosing osteoporosis among postmenopausal women: a real-world study.

CONTEXT: DXA densitometry is the current gold standard for the diagnosis of osteoporosis, but alternatives have been proposed. MAIN RESULT: REMS densitometry shows high correlation with DXA in the identification of osteoporosis, especially in the lumbar spine. RELEVANCE: REMS can be a useful tool for the identification of osteoporosis. INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD). The gold standard for diagnosis is bone densitometry using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). However, a non-ionizing technique based on quantitative ultrasound-radiofrequ

Flexor digitorum profundus evaluation in normal muscle mass subjects and presarcopenic patients - a sonoelastographic cross-sectional study.

AIM: Presarcopenia represents the earliest stage of sarcopenia. While muscle ultrasound (US) and shear wave elastography (SWE) offer promise as a non-invasive tool, its role in detecting early muscle loss remains underexplored, especially in the upper limb. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) muscle in older adults with presarcopenia versus normal muscle mass, and to assess the diagnostic potential of grayscale echogenicity and SWE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 50 age- and sex-matched participants classified as

Bridging diagnostic gaps in osteoporosis and sarcopenia in long-term care: Leveraging a mobile assessment unit for clinical trials and comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis and sarcopenia are prevalent in older adults, particularly in long-term care (LTC) settings, where logistical barriers often impede timely musculoskeletal assessments. Traditional mobile DXA services are limited and typically lack integrated evaluations of muscle health and functional performance. The present report shares our experience with an all-in-one mobile assessment unit designed to provide comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluations directly at LTC facilities. METHODS: The mobile unit was deployed across five randomized controlled trials in over 30 LTC faciliti

The challenges of assessing adiposity in a clinical setting.

To tackle the burden of obesity-induced cardiometabolic disease, the scientific community relies on accurate and reproducible adiposity measurements in the clinic. These measurements guide our understanding of underlying biological mechanisms and clinical outcomes of human trials. However, measuring adiposity and adipose tissue distribution in a clinical setting can be challenging, and different measurement methods pose important limitations. BMI is a simple and high-throughput measurement, but it is associated relatively poorly with clinical outcomes when compared with waist-to-hip and sagitt

Consequences of adolescent sport-related concussion: exploring long-term cardiorespiratory fitness and adiposity.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding long-term consequences (≥5 years) of sport-related concussion (SRC) sustained during adolescence. Adolescent SRC has been linked to athlete considerations of sport participation and subsequent retirement from sport during this critical developmental period. Prolonged SRC symptoms can reduce ability to perform physical activity, and research suggests inactivity can extend years post-injury. Therefore, SRC may affect long-term physical activity, which may result in decreased cardiorespiratory fitness and increased adiposity. OBJECTIVES: (1) To examine cardi

Secular Trends in Peak Bone Mineral Density: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018.

Peak bone mineral density (BMD) is one of the most important factors influencing the development of osteoporosis. It was predicted that a 10% increase in peak BMD will delay the onset of osteoporosis by 13 years. However, changes in peak BMD over time are unknown. This study aimed to investigate secular trends in peak BMD among young adults in the United States. Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999-2018, 3,975 males aged 19-28 years and 2370 females aged 31-40 years were our target population for estimating peak lumbar spine BMD. BMD was measured by dual-ener

Bone health and physical activity in adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a cross-sectional case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) tend to engage in less physical activity than their typically developing peers. Physical activity is essential for bone development and reduced physical activity may detrimentally effect bone health. Thus, we examined differences in total body bone mineral content (BMC) and areal bone mineral density (aBMD) between adolescents with JIA and adolescent controls without JIA. We also examined associations between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), lean mass, and bone outcomes. METHODS: Participants included 21 adolescent

Increased response of postmenopausal bone to interval walking training depends on baseline bone mineral density.

PURPOSE: To examine the hypothesis that an increase in response of postmenopausal bone to interval walking training (IWT) depends on baseline bone mineral densities (BMDs). METHODS: Two hundred and thirty-four postmenopausal women (64±5 (SD) yr) with no medication for osteoporosis performed 5-month IWT, repeating fast and slow walking at ≥70% and ~40% peak aerobic capacity, respectively, for 3 minutes each per set, ≥5 sets/day, ≥4 days/week. They were recruited from those who had performed IWT ≥6 months before participating in the study so that their physical fitness and lifestyle-related dis

Opportunistic Screening of Low Bone Mineral Density From Standard X-Rays.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis, characterized by loss of bone mineral density (BMD), is underscreened. Osteoporosis and low bone mass are diagnosed by a BMD T-score ≤ -2.5, and between -1.0 and -2.5, respectively, at the femoral neck or lumbar vertebrae (L1-4), using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The ability to estimate BMD at those anatomic sites from standard radiographs would enable opportunistic screening of low BMD (T-score < -1) in individuals undergoing x-ray for any clinical indication. METHODS: Radiographs of the lumbar spine, thoracic spine, chest, pelvis, hand, and knee, with a
