A 2-year-old child underwent renal transplantation in the presence of a post-viral enteropathy rendering him dependent on total parenteral nutrition. As part of his immunosuppression, he was given a new oral formulation of cyclosporin A (Neoral), which he was able to absorb satisfactorily, using conventional doses, during the 6 weeks he was dependent on intravenous nutrition and in the face of intermittent severe diarrhoea. An unusual pharmacokinetic profile was observed.

In the last five years, several measurements of 22Na+ influx (Ji) and outflux (Jo) across symmetrical parts of the isolated skin of Rana esculenta, under permanent short circuitation, were performed in our Institute. During anaesthesia the combination of breathing at low lung volume, the administration of nitrous oxide and high inspired oxygen concentrations produces conditions that favour absorption atelectasis. We report our discovery of an absorption feature in the infrared spectrum of Io centered at 2.1253 micrometers (4705.2 cm-1). This band is marginally resolved at resolving power 1200 with a deconvolved full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of about 4 cm-1. This contrasts with the 30- to 50-cm-1 widths of the broad absorption features previously detected at longer wavelengths which arise from mixtures of SO2 with H2S and H2O. The percutaneous absorption of the fragrance diethyl maleate was measured in vivo in human and monkey studies. With the application sites occluded, 54% of the applied dose of the volatile fragrance penetrated human skin in 24 hr compared with 69% absorption in the monkey skin. The percutaneous absorption of local anaesthetics in a standard formulation has been compared in vitro and in vivo. In vitro data were obtained with a modified Sartorius absorption system and silastic as a lipophilic barrier membrane.
