BACKGROUND/AIMS: To develop and assess a zonal classification of the retina to facilitate description of the location of retinal haemorrhages in children.
METHODS: A novel zonal classification of the retina was devised based on the anatomical landmarks of the optic disc and vascular arcades, by reviewing a large number of wide field digital retinal images drawn from our database of children with accidental and non-accidental head injury and other encepthalopathies. Four expert examiners then independently 'located' 142 retinal haemorrhages by zone, from 31 high quality photographs.

Honeybee sting injuries involving the cornea are uncommon but can result in severe visual morbidity because of mechanical injury and venom-induced toxicity. A 29-year-old man presented with severe pain, redness, watering, and profound visual loss in the right eye following accidental entry of a honeybee while driving. Visual acuity was perception of light with accurate projection of rays in all four quadrants. Slit-lamp examination revealed marked corneal edema, Descemet membrane folds, and a deep stromal foreign body in the superotemporal cornea. Intraocular pressure was elevated to 42 mmHg.

Falls are classified by WHO as the second highest cause of accidental injuries in older adults. It remains unclear what characteristics of falls are in elderly individuals that do not present definite causes. A total of 304 institutionalized older adults presented at least one fall were recruited in this retrospective observational study. INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: A vesico-vaginal fistula (VVF) is a fistulous tract that connects bladder and vagina, causing urine leakage via the vagina. In the developed world, iatrogenic postoperative VVF is the most common case. Classically, when treating a VVF via the abdominal route, an abdominal flap is mobilized and interposed between the bladder and the vagina.

Intra-alveolar root fractures of posterior teeth are rare when compared with other dental injuries. This case report describes one vertical and two horizontal root fractures of teeth 3, 14, and 15. The teeth all tested normal to cold and electric pulp tests. The patient reported no history of accidental trauma, and no signs of scarring were found. During one year, four (6.5%) of the 61 children who were hospitalized for burns at a children's hospital sustained their injuries in a walker. By retrospective review of 1,061 charts and prospective analysis of all accidental injuries seen in a Pediatric Emergency Room over a 5-year period, criteria were developed to identify the source of an injury as either specific or nonspecific, i.e., whether a unique causative mechanism was clear or not from the clinical or radiologic signs. A man in his 60s, under dual immunosuppression following bilateral lung transplantation (BiLuTx), developed bacteraemia and septic shock by Pseudomonas aeruginosa with ecthyma gangrenosum. Symptoms emerged acutely a few weeks after he had received high-dose intravenous steroid treatment for acute cellular graft rejection (ACR). The suspected route of entry of the pathogen was a minor accidental skin injury. Despite the severity of his condition, he successfully recovered after an intensive 26-day course of intravenous antibiotic therapy.

This study reports on a rare variation of the right internal jugular vein (IJV) identified during routine anatomic dissection of a male cadaver. The right IJV had a tributary located parallel and medially to the IJV itself. This branch of the IJV emerged between the transverse processes of the 3rd and 4th cervical vertebrae and drained into the junction between the right internal jugular and brachiocephalic veins. The present study described a rare branch of the right IJV, which is important knowledge for surgeons, in order to prevent accidental injury and bleeding during surgical procedures.

Graphite tattoo, a rare finding in children, is characterized by a localized blue-grey macule of variable sizes and shapes. Intraoral graphite implantation may cause this pigmentation through accidental injury with a graphite pencil. The purpose of this paper is to report an unusual case of graphite tattoo involving the anterior palate region in a seven-year-old girl.
