Rudimentary eyes of squamate fossorial reptiles (amphisbaenia and serpentes).

The rudimentary characteristic of the eyes of fossorial animals raises some questions regarding its evolution and functionality. Would these eyes result from atrophy or from stagnated development? How would its visual function work? Anatomical investigations of these organs are the fundamental preamble to answer those questions, which are still little explored by the literature. In this article we have studied anatomical aspects of the eyes of three species of fossorial reptiles, within the suborder Amphisbaena (Amphisbaena alba, Amphisbaena mertensi, Leposternon infraorbitale), as well as a s

Altitude training considerations for the winter sport athlete.

Winter sports events routinely take place at low to moderate altitudes, and nearly all Winter Olympic Games have had at least one venue at an altitude >1000 m. The acute and chronic effects of altitude can have a substantial effect on performance outcomes. Acutely, the decline in oxygen delivery to working muscle decreases maximal oxygen uptake, negatively affecting performance in endurance events, such as cross-country skiing and biathlon. The reduction in air resistance at altitude can dramatically affect sports involving high velocities and technical skill components, such as ski jumping, s

Growth and nutritive value of cassava (Manihot esculenta Cranz.) are reduced when grown in elevated CO.

Global food security in a changing climate depends on both the nutritive value of staple crops as well as their yields. Here, we examined the direct effect of atmospheric CO(2) on cassava (Manihot esculenta Cranz., manioc), a staple for 750 million people worldwide. Cassava is poor in nutrients and contains high levels of cyanogenic glycosides that break down to release toxic hydrogen cyanide when damaged. We grew cassava at three concentrations of CO(2) (C(a): 360, 550 and 710 ppm) supplied together with nutrient solution containing either 1 mM or 12 mM nitrogen. We found that total plant bio

Reviewing molecular adaptations of Lyme borreliosis spirochetes in the context of reproductive fitness in natural transmission cycles.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is caused by a group of pathogenic spirochetes - most often Borrelia burgdorferi, B. afzelii, and B. garinii - that are vectored by hard ticks in the Ixodes ricinus-persulcatus complex, which feed on a variety of mammals, birds, and lizards. Although LB is one of the best-studied vector-borne zoonoses, the annual incidence in North America and Europe leads other vector-borne diseases and continues to increase. What factors make the LB system so successful, and how can researchers hope to reduce disease risk - either through vaccinating humans or reducing the risk of conta

Ecological fitness and strategies of adaptation of Bartonella species to their hosts and vectors.

Bartonella spp. are facultative intracellular bacteria that cause characteristic hostrestricted hemotropic infections in mammals and are typically transmitted by blood-sucking arthropods. In the mammalian reservoir, these bacteria initially infect a yet unrecognized primary niche, which seeds organisms into the blood stream leading to the establishment of a long-lasting intra-erythrocytic bacteremia as the hall-mark of infection. Bacterial type IV secretion systems, which are supra-molecular transporters ancestrally related to bacterial conjugation systems, represent crucial pathogenicity fact

Adaptive evolution and functional redesign of core metabolic proteins in snakes.

BACKGROUND: Adaptive evolutionary episodes in core metabolic proteins are uncommon, and are even more rarely linked to major macroevolutionary shifts. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted extensive molecular evolutionary analyses on snake mitochondrial proteins and discovered multiple lines of evidence suggesting that the proteins at the core of aerobic metabolism in snakes have undergone remarkably large episodic bursts of adaptive change. We show that snake mitochondrial proteins experienced unprecedented levels of positive selection, coevolution, convergence, and reversion at funct

Cadmium hyperaccumulation leads to an increase of glutathione rather than phytochelatins in the cadmium hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii.

Sedum alfredii has been reported to be a cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulator. Phytochelatins (PCs) and other thiol (SH)-containing compounds have been proposed to play an important role in the detoxification and tolerance of some heavy metals, but it is not clear whether PCs are responsible for Cd hyperaccumulation and tolerance in S. alfredii. In this study, two geographically isolated populations of S. alfredii were studied: one population grew on an old Pb/Zn mine site, while the other on a non-mine site. The mine population of this species exhibited a stronger heavy metal tolerance than in the o

Management and treatment of lactose malabsorption.

Lactose malabsorption is a very common condition characterized by intestinal lactase deficiency. Primary lactose malabsorption is an inherited deficit present in the majority of the world's population, while secondary hypolactasia can be the consequence of an intestinal disease. The presence of malabsorbed lactose in the colonic lumen causes gastrointestinal symptoms. The condition is known as lactose intolerance. In patients with lactase nonpersistence, treatment should be considered exclusively if intolerance symptoms are present. In the absence of guidelines, the common therapeutic approach

Drug adjuncts for treating alcohol dependence.

Three drugs are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treating alcoholism: disulfiram, naltrexone, and acamprosate. Drugs approved for other indications that are being used experimentally or "off-label" include nalmafene, topiramate, and ondansetron. As we learn more about the pathophysiologic basis of alcoholism, it is hoped that novel drugs can be developed to help people with alcohol dependence achieve abstinence, and as a result, curb alcohol-related morbidity.

Physiological responses to freezing in hatchlings of freeze-tolerant and -intolerant turtles.

Freeze tolerance is a complex cold-hardiness adaptation that has independently evolved in a diverse group of organisms, including several ectothermic vertebrates. Because little is known about the mechanistic basis for freeze tolerance in reptiles, we compared responses to experimental freezing in winter-acclimatized hatchlings representing nine taxa of temperate North American turtles, including ones that tolerated freezing and others that did not. Viability rates of hatchlings frozen to -3 degrees C for 72 h ranged from 0 to 100%. Tolerance to freezing was poor in Sternotherus odoratus, Grap

Adaptive chaos: mild disorder may help contain major disease.

We have qualitatively analyzed different cases of human disorders and displacement activities of animals and hypothesize that some of them are examples of low-dimensional dynamical chaos in biological organisms. We also considered a biological organism in the framework of the control system theory and found that chaotic regime in one subsystem may be compensating for the loss of chaos in another subsystem for the sake of stability of the whole system. According to the hypothesis chaotic behavior of different organs sets in a human body as an alternative to serious diseases or even death. The p

Hunger tolerance and Leishmania in sandflies.

The sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi transmits Leishmania major, the agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis, in desert and savannah regions of the Old World, where seasonal stress of dehydration and heat reduces the quantity of sugar in plant leaves. Without essential sugar, only a few flies that feed on leaves can survive for long enough to deposit eggs and transmit Leishmania. Accordingly, selection for hunger tolerance may also select for pathogen susceptibility in flies. Here we provide evidence of a link between these advantageous and costly properties by testing the susceptibility of flies selecte

Apoptosis and the adaptive response in human lymphocytes.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the sensitivity of human lymphocytes for apoptosis induced by either a membrane oxidizing agent or a DNA damaging agent is modified by an adaptive response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Peripheral blood lymphocytes from normal human donors were exposed to low doses of the DNA damaging agent gamma-radiation, or the membrane oxidizing agent t-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH), incubated for various times and then tested for their sensitivity to induction of apoptosis by a subsequent exposure to a high dose of either agent. Apoptosis was measured using a fluorescent assay of

Adaptation motor learning of arm movements in patients with cerebellar disease.

OBJECTIVE: To design a test of motor learning using arm movements in normal subjects and patients with cerebellar disease. METHODS: Elbow angle was continuously displayed as a cursor (a dot) on a computer screen, and subjects made ballistic elbow flexion and extension movements to try to move the cursor between two targets on the screen. The relation between the arm movement and its visual feedback was changed, and the subjects reacted by adapting the amplitude of their movements in subsequent trials. RESULTS: The consecutive errors showed exponential learning curves during adaptation, which

Mechanisms of injury in progressive renal disease.

Recognition that loss of renal function is progressive has led to extensive investigation into risk factors and mechanisms of injury. Persistent activity of the underlying disease contributes, though progression may proceed in its absence. Nephrotoxic insults which pose little threat to the normal kidney may enhance progression in the diseased kidney. Functional adaptations, including glomerular hypertension and proteinuria, in themselves contribute to ongoing destruction. Structural and cellular adaptations, including tubulointerstitial fibrosis, also play a role. A large number of mediators

Occupational exposure to radiation induces an adaptive response in human lymphocytes.

The in vitro pretreatment of phytohaemagglutinin stimulated human lymphocytes with tritiated thymidine or with low doses of X-rays induces a response that makes these cells less susceptible to further genetic damage induced by subsequent high doses of radiation. This phenomenon has been called 'Adaptive Response' because it is similar to the one described in E. coli. In the present study, we describe that lymphocytes irradiated in vitro at 2 Gy, from individuals occupationally exposed to X and gamma rays, show lower frequencies of dicentrics than those from non-occupationally exposed individua

The dawn of Darwinian medicine.

While evolution by natural selection has long been a foundation for biomedical science, it has recently gained new power to explain many aspects of disease. This progress results largely from the disciplined application of what has been called the adaptations program. We show that this increasingly significant research paradigm can predict otherwise unsuspected facets of human biology, and that it provides new insights into the causes of medical disorders, such as those discussed below: 1. Infection. Signs and symptoms of the host-parasite contest can be categorized according to whether they r

Stress and hypertension--a critical review.

Recurrent psychosomatic stress has been popularly thought to cause permanent hypertension by repeated reactive blood pressure elevations. These are considered by some to be caused by various mechanisms, including an increased sympathetic outflow and a decreased parasympathetic inhibition, or possibly an inborn functional abnormality in the walls of the resistance vessels, which becomes a structural abnormality as a result of the elevated pressure. Recent work, however, has questioned some of these concepts. Many of the assumptions in the past concerning the ill-effects of elevated blood pressu
