This paper describes a method for applying controlled loads to a lumbar vertebra while recording in vivo from primary afferents innervating the lumbar paraspinal tissues. Unlike the appendicular skeleton, the vertebral column poses a unique challenge for neurophysiological investigations. Distances between paraspinal tissues and the spinal cord are short. In addition, substantial removal of the paraspinal tissues to access the spinal roots or spinal cord appears necessary. The effect of somatostatin on the sensory activity of primary afferents was studied in normal and acutely inflamed rat knee joints. We compared matching of finger forces under isometric conditions with matching of forces produced against a spring load (anisometric conditions) in twenty normal subjects. The instruction was to generate the same force in both hands holding a grip between thumb and index finger in each hand. The urinary responses of 62 T8-T11 spinal neurons were recorded extracellularly following electrical stimulation of the greater splanchnic nerve (GSN) in chloralose-anesthetized rats. Recent interest in silent angina deals in a sense with a double unknown since the pathogenesis of angina pectoris remains unexplained. The method of recording single unit potentials with wire electrodes in animals has been applied to humans. Using two pairs of special electrodes it was possible to record extracellular single unit potentials at two different places in nerve root filaments in the spinal canal with the dura open and to determine conduction velocities. This method may be used in the future for the identification of afferent fibres in the spinal canal during the operation.
