AIM: The application of ultrasound may be suitable for evaluating the effects of intestinal cytoskeletal rearrangement of the duodenum and colon as a result of exposure to live Giardia lamblia trophozoites. We studied the sonographic appearance of the duodenum and colon in giardiasis compared with amebiasis and healthy subjects.
METHODS: Sonographic images obtained from 100 consecutive patients with symptomatic giardiasis were compared to those taken from 40 patients with amebiasis and 40 healthy subjects. B-mode ultrasound examination of the duodenum and colon was performed using a 7.5 MHz a…

Serum samples of 31 amebic liver abscess (ALA) patients, 8 amebic hepatitis (AH) patients, and 60 controls were tested for anti-amebic IgG by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescent antibody tests (IFAT). Sera of 29 (93.6%) ALA and 6 (75%) AH patients and 2 (3.3%) control subjects were positive by IFAT. Anti-amebic antibody titer above the cutoff point (= 0.168; x + 2 SD of control sera) was observed in sera of 27 (87%) ALA, 4 (50%) AH, and 1 (1.7%) control by ELISA. All the 8 pus samples were positive for anti-amebic antibodies by IFAT and ELISA. Sensitivity of ELIS

INTRODUCTION: Liver is the most common site of extraintestinal amebiasis and hepatic abscesses are the most frequent symptom, occurring in 3-9% of patients with amebic infection. Several studies have shown that drug treatment is more efficacious when combined with percutaneous drainage of the abscess, yielding quicker recovery and a positive body response. We report our US and CT findings in 16 patients with amebic abscesses, 12 of whom lived in a temperate peripheral area north-east of Naples. All patients had a clinical-diagnostic condition that we called "suburban amebiasis". Finally we rep…

Amebiasis is an infectious disease caused by Entamoeba histolytica, an anaerobic protozoan parasite, and is a major public health problem worldwide, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. Th1 responses, represented by interferon gamma (IFN-γ), play a protective role by clearing the amebae from the gut, whereas Th2 responses are responsible for chronic infection. Th17 responses preconditioned by vaccination or by modulating the intestinal microbiome protect mice from the settlement of E. histolytica. However, the role of interleukin-17A (IL-17A), which is upregulated…

In this prospective cohort study, the presence of parasite-specific immunoglobulin A in breast milk was associated with protection of Bangladeshi infants from cryptosporidiosis and amebiasis. Our findings suggest that passive immunity could be harnessed for the prevention of Entamoeba histolytica and Cryptosporidium species infection in children living in endemic regions.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms and the failure to eradicate infection by a number of important pathogens has led to increased efforts to develop vaccines to prevent infectious diseases. However, the nature of the immune response to vaccination with a given antigen can be complex and unpredictable. An example is the galactose- and N-acetylgalactosamine-inhibitable lectin, a surface antigen of Entamoeba histolytica that has been identified as a major candidate in a vaccine to prevent amebiasis. Vaccination with the lectin can induce protective immunity to amebic liver abscess in …

The pathogenesis of experimentally induced cecal amebiasis in gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) was studied from 5 to 60 days after inoculation. Ulcerative lesions were noted 10 to 60 days after inoculation. The sequential development of lesions was asynchronous and progressed from destruction of the interglandular epithelium and of glandular crypt elements to loss of mucosa and formation of granulomatous lesions in the submucosa involving the muscularis mucosae. Pathologic changes in the liver correlated with the formation of ulcerative cecal lesions. Subacute hepatic changes showed lymphocytic…

Entamoeba histolytica is a common enteric protozoan that sometimes transitions from a symbiont to a pathogen, causing intestinal amebiasis and extraintestinal abscesses in the host. The early-to-intermediate stages of intestinal amebiasis are characterized by an intense inflammatory response. Here, using the cecal infection model of C3H/HeNCrl mice, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing of cecal tissues and identified the prominent pro-inflammatory function of host macrophages in intestinal amebiasis. On the amebic cell surface, Igl is the intermediate subunit of galactose- and N-acetyl-D-ga…
