Human rhinoviruses and enteroviruses in influenza-like illness in Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Human rhinoviruses (HRVs) belong to the Picornaviridae family with high similarity to human enteroviruses (HEVs). Limited data is available from Latin America regarding the clinical presentation and strains of these viruses in respiratory disease. METHODS: We collected nasopharyngeal swabs at clinics located in eight Latin American countries from 3,375 subjects aged 25 years or younger who presented with influenza-like illness. RESULTS: Our subjects had a median age of 3 years and a 1.2:1.0 male:female ratio. HRV was identified in 16% and HEV was identified in 3%. HRVs accounted

Parasites of freshwater fishes in North America: why so neglected?

Fish parasitology has a long tradition in North America and numerous parasitologists have contributed considerably to the current knowledge of the diversity and biology of protistan and metazoan parasites of freshwater fishes. The Journal of Parasitology has been essential in disseminating this knowledge and remains a significant contributor to our understanding of fish parasites in North America as well as more broadly at the international level. However, with a few exceptions, the importance of fish parasites has decreased during the last decades, which is reflected in the considerable decli

Epilepsy and neurocysticercosis in Latin America: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The difference in epilepsy burden existing among populations in tropical regions has been attributed to many factors, including the distribution of infectious diseases with neurologic sequels. To define the burden of epilepsy in Latin American Countries (LAC) and to investigate the strength of association with neurocysticercosis (NCC), considered one of the leading causes of epilepsy, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature. METHODOLOGY: Studies published until 2012 were selected applying predefined inclusion criteria. Lifetime epilepsy (LTE) prevalenc

Survey of otolaryngology services in Central America: need for a comprehensive intervention.

In the developing world, there exists a scarcity of services and training in otolaryngology, audiology, and speech therapy, which is reflected by the gap between health care delivery in high-income countries and low-income countries. We surveyed, by questionnaire, the countries of Central America, except for Belize, because of the lack of otolaryngology services, on the following issues: availability of otolaryngology, audiology, and speech therapy services and equipment; otolaryngologist, audiologist, and speech therapist training; and availability of services in rural areas. Surveys were dis

Preferential associated anomalies in 818 cases of microtia in South America.

The etiology of microtia remains unknown in most cases. The identification of patterns of associated anomalies (i.e., other anomalies that occur with a given congenital anomaly in a higher than expected frequency), is a methodology that has been used for research into the etiology of birth defects. We conducted a study based on cases of microtia that were diagnosed from more than 5 million live (LB)- and stillbirths (SB) examined in hospitals participating in ECLAMC (Latin American Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations) between 1967 and 2009. We identified 818 LB and SB with microtia

A patient and physician survey of fibromyalgia across Latin America and Europe.

BACKGROUND: Patients and physicians from three Latin American (LA) and six European countries were surveyed in order to describe differences in journey to diagnosis, impact, and management of fibromyalgia (FM). METHODS: 900 patients (300 LA; 600 Europe) and 1824 physicians (604 LA; 1220 Europe) were surveyed between October-December 2010 (LA) and February-April 2008 (Europe). Patients and physicians (GP or specialists) completed separate questionnaires, on symptoms, impact, and FM management. Interviews were conducted in local languages. Appropriate rating scales were used throughout. Data we

Epidemiology of vasculitides: differences between Japan, Europe and North America.

The epidemiology of systemic vasculitides differs between Japan, Europe and North America. Takayasu's arteritis occurs frequently in Japan, unlike giant cell arteritis. A collaborative international study comparing the epidemiology of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis between Japan and the United Kingdom (UK) demonstrated that microscopic polyangiitis and myeloperoxidase-ANCA were more common in Japan, whereas granulomatosis with polyangiitis and pronase 3-ANCA were more common in the UK. These differences may be attributed to differences in latitude and genetic

[Recommendations for the diagnosis of candidemia in Latin America. Grupo Proyecto Épico].

Candidemia is one of the most frequent opportunistic mycoses worldwide. Limited epidemiological studies in Latin America indicate that incidence rates are higher in this region than in the Northern Hemisphere. Diagnosis is often made late in the infection, affecting the initiation of antifungal therapy. A more scientific approach, based on specific parameters, for diagnosis and management of candidemia in Latin America is warranted. 'Recommendations for the diagnosis and management of candidemia' are a series of manuscripts that have been developed by members of the Latin America Invasive Myco

Cryptococcus gattii as an important fungal pathogen of western North America.

Cryptococcus gattii, a pathogenic fungus historically appreciated to be endemic to tropical regions, was recognized to emerge in a more temperate zone of North America in the 1990s. Early reports focused on an outbreak that was first apparent on Vancouver Island (BC, Canada), involving both the veterinary and human population. More recently, it has been recognized that this organism is endemic to a wider geography in western North America, with recognized disease caused by unique molecular subtypes in both healthy and immunosuppressed human hosts and a variety of domestic and wild animals. Overcoming undernutrition with local resources in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Even in the 21st century, undernutrition is a challenge to be overcome. In the year 2009, 1.02 billion people were reported as food insecure and 180 million children were undernourished. Food insecurity and undernutrition are more than a lack of food energy: they are not reflected countrywide by prevalence means; they are mostly not permanent but seasonal; they are mostly not caused by insufficient amounts of food being produced; and they first affect parents and later children. Food insecurity and undernutrition often manifest themselves as micronutrient deficiency. While undernutrition is st

Current surgical management of bilateral cleft lip in North America.

BACKGROUND: This study was undertaken to determine contemporary surgical management of bilateral cleft lip. METHODS: A survey was sent to North American cleft surgeons. Variables included number of bilateral cleft lip repairs per year, surgical specialty, and methods of nasolabial correction. The authors analyzed possible relationships between surgical specialty/volume and operative techniques. RESULTS: The response rate was 40 percent (241 of 600). Annual bilateral nasolabial repairs per surgeon were as follows: zero to two, 30 percent; three to five, 46 percent; and six or more, 25 percent

The changing epidemiology of meningococcal disease in North America 1945-2010.

The epidemiology of Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD) is distinct in the United States and Canada compared with other countries. This review describes the incidence, mortality and vaccination strategies relevant to IMD in these countries over the past 65 y. The incidence of IMD has remained consistently low in both countries during this period. Serogroup B and serogroup C have been the most prominent disease-causing serogroups. Notably, serogroup Y has recently become an important cause of IMD in the USA, but has not been as prominent in Canada. Periodic rises in incidence have been charact

Robotic-assisted partial Nephrectomy: initial experience in South America.

OBJECTIVE: To report the initial outcomes of robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy in a tertiary center in South America. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 11/2008 to 12/2009, a total of 16 transperitoneal robotic-assisted partial nephrectomies were performed in 15 patients to treat 18 kidney tumors. One patient with bilateral tumor had two procedures, while two patients with two synchronous unilateral tumors had a single operation to remove them. Eleven (73%) patients were male and the right kidney was affected in 7 (46%) patients. The median patient age and tumor size were 57 years old and 30 mm, r

Development of pediatric cardiology in latin america: accomplishments and remaining challenges.

Until the first quarter of the 20th century, most physicians were more than happy to differentiate congenital heart lesions from rheumatic heart disease, which then was rampant. As early as 1932, Dr Rodolfo Kreutzer, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, was already involved in the study of congenital heart defects. He started off assessing children with a stethoscope and with Einthoven electrocardiography equipment. The cardiac unit at the Buenos Aires Children's Hospital was created in 1936. It established the onset of pediatric cardiology in Argentina and fueled its development in South America. Ne

The occurrence of rabies in pre-Columbian Central America: an historical search.

Rabies is considered one of the oldest infectious diseases known to humans. However, the first written reports on rabies cases in the Americas did not appear until the first decade of the 18th century from Mexico. In an attempt to clarify if the disease was already present in pre-Columbian times, we searched for evidence in the Maya and Aztec cultures. Other sources of information were early manuscripts written by the conquistadors and early explorers. We did not identify any unequivocal direct evidence that the disease rabies was known in pre-Columbian Central America but sufficient circumsta…

[Systematic review: Epidemiology of gastroesophageal reflux disease in Latin America].

The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is 10% to 20% in Europe and North America, and about 5% in Asia. This systematic review aimed to quantify the prevalence and incidence of GERD in Latin America, and to determine the potential risk factors and co-morbidities. Systematic literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase and the Scientific Electronic Library On-line. No language restrictions were imposed. Eight studies were identified that reported on the prevalence of heartburn and/or regurgitation in Latin America. The prevalence of heartburn and/or regurgitation was 1

Paleopathological interpretations of hypermobility syndrome in the art from ancient America.

Paleopathological representations of hypermobility syndrome were assumed in pre-Columbian artifacts from different ancient civilizations from America. Anthropomorphic sculptures from several museums and galleries visited on site or thru Internet show the human figure in contorted positions. These positions are only possible within well-trained individuals or persons with hyperextensibility of the joints.
