OBJECTIVE: Liposomal local anesthetics have been shown to extend analgesia duration and improve pain scores dose-dependently in horses. Our objective was to assess concurrent impact on systemic inflammatory markers.
METHODS: 18 mares (age, 2 to 20 years) with normal ovarian anatomy were enrolled. Laparoscopic bilateral ovariectomies were performed standing with sedation. Systemic contact dermatitis is a dermatitis that may occur in previously sensitized individuals when they are re-exposed to the allergen. Although many drugs have been implicated as a cause of systemic contact dermatitis, local anesthetics derived from caines have been rarely reported. We present a case of systemic contact dermatitis after a digital rectal examination with a urological lubricant containing amethocaine.

Acute cyanosis and methemoglobinemia developed following topical application and partial ingestion of benzocaine for esophagogastroduodenoscopy. A diagnosis of acute toxic methemoglobinemia should be considered when cyanosis, with or without neurologic symptoms, occurs following the use of local anesthetics in the absence of cardiopulmonary disease. Laboratory tests should include oxygen saturation and methemoglobin concentration. Management includes supplemental oxygen administration and intravenous methylene blue.

Using the electron spin resonance technique of the spin probe (TEMPO) is shown that local anaesthetics lidocaine, tetracaine, dibucaine, heptacaine and carbizocaine decrease the gel--liquid crystal phase transition temperature and increase the width of the phase transition of the dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) model membrane. These effects roughly correlate with the efficiencies of the anesthetics to block action potential propagation in the nerves.
