We describe 6 patients who presented with cataract or aphakia and absent or nonfunctional irides. The etiologies included congenital aniridia, traumatic iris loss, and chronic mydriasis secondary to recurrent herpetic uveitis. In 5 eyes, a prosthetic iris was successfully implanted in combination with small incision cataract surgery. In 2 eyes, a single-piece iris diaphragm and optical lens was implanted. Artificial irides offer a safe alternative for patients who previously had no viable options for iris reconstruction.

A 38-year-old patient who developed aphakia and aniridia secondary to trauma suffered from vision loss. To improve her vision, an iris-intraocular lens complex (Reper®) was fixed to the sclera with Canabrava's double-flanged technique. There was a satisfactory increase in the patient's visual acuity and no complications were observed during the 6-months follow-up. Canabrava technique simplifies and improves the fixation of the iris-intraocular lens complex to the sclera. It is a safe option that does not require scleral flaps or knots.

PURPOSE: To report a sight-threatening complication of silicone oil injection for management of complex retinal detachment.
METHODS: Review of case record.
RESULTS: Spontaneous perforation of cornea may occur following silicone oil injection into an eye for complex retinal detachments. Risk factors are longer duration of oil in the eye, aphakia, silicone oil in the anterior chamber, and extensive and multiple surgeries.
CONCLUSIONS: In high-risk cases, regular assessment of corneal status and removal of silicone oil may help to prevent such a complication.

Two hundred fifty patients were examined after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy and 330 patients retrospectively after Nd:YAG laser iridotomy. Retinal detachment followed in 3.6% of the capsulotomies. No correlation was found between the number of exposures or applied total energy and the risk for retinal detachment. The risk for retinal detachment, however, was found to be increased considerably by myopia and aphakia. After iridotomy, retinal detachment occurred in only one case, although similar energy levels were used for both procedures.

UNLABELLED: The aim of the work is to evaluate the ocular functions in children and teenagers after IOL implantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 51 eyes in 47 patients aged 6-20 years. IOL implantation was performed simultaneously with congenital or traumatic cataract surgery and in aphakia.
RESULTS: The visual acuity 5/50-5/5 was achieved in 73.3% of eyes after congenital cataract surgery, in 76.5% of eyes after traumatic cataract surgery, and in 31% of aphakic eyes before implantation.

Four removed kerato-lens lenticles (1 for keratoconus, 1 for aphakia, and 2 for myopia) have been studied histologically. The reasons for removal of the lenticles were poor visual acuity in spite of a satisfactory anatomic result in three cases and epithelialization of the interface in one case. The epithelium presented modifications, particularly with exoserosis of basal cells and irregularities of thickness. The Bowman membrane was irregular and interrupted in some parts. The corneal stroma had few cells; the keratocytes were observed in the periphery of the lenticle and near the interface.
