BACKGROUND: Little information is available on factors that predict adherence to patching in infants. We evaluated data from the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study, a randomized clinical trial of treatment for infants with unilateral congenital cataracts, to investigate factors associated with successful adherence to patching protocols.

We report a 50-year-old patient who had secondary implantation of an aphakic Artisan (Ophtec) intraocular lens (IOL) that was placed vertically in the anterior chamber. The patient had had a perforating injury to the cornea that required corneal wound repair, lensectomy, and anterior vitrectomy. Because of the localized traumatic aniridia, the Artisan IOL could not be placed horizontally. Three months after surgery, the best corrected visual acuity was 0.9 and there were no complications.

PURPOSE: To describe the results of Ahmed valve surgery for refractory pediatric glaucoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients younger than 18 years of age who had Ahmed valve surgery from November 1994 to January 2003. Success was defined as a reduction of the intraocular pressure (IOP) to 22 mm Hg or lower with or without medications at the last two follow-up visits, no additional glaucoma surgery, and no visually significant complications.

PURPOSE: To assess the results of implantation of secondary, open-loop, flexible, anterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs) and compare the findings with those of other published studies.

We prospectively examined corneal conditions and bacterial growth in 77 individuals with unilateral aphakia who were using extended-wear soft contact lenses. The ratios of positive bacterial growth (70.6-79.4%) from 34 patients with superficial punctate keratopathy were significantly higher than those (41.9-46.5%) from the 43 subjects with normal corneas. Serum, aqueous humour, and lens ascorbic acid levels were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography in cataract-, closed-angle glaucoma-, and aphakic patients. The influence of daltonism on painting was studied by Geothe. After a brief historical review, the methods employed are described. These included copying of paintings, critical analysis of paintings by color-blind subjects, and speculations on the history of art. The manner of painting of persons with daltonism depends upon the pictorial consequences of the dyschromatopsia, and the compensatory procedures employed: monochrome or polychrome. Acquired dyschromatopsia also affects painting. Daltonism influences esthetic taste and has to be taken into account during orientation of art students.

A 7-year-old boy who had had electrically induced cataracts since he was 6 months old underwent a lens extraction by phacoemulsification in his right eye. He later refused to wear a contact lens. In a survey of 58 aphakic eyes examined 5 to 10 years after surgery, 12% had episcleral vessels in the inner aspect of the cataract incision and almost half of these eyes showed evidence of mild intraocular hemorrhage. Analysis of these and 33 other eyes indicates that argon laser treatment is only temporarily effective in preventing intraocular hemorrhage. Limbal cryotherapy is effective in a one- to four-year follow-up. While these vessels are a common cause of transient intraocular hemorrhage in aphakic eyes, serious sequelae are rare and treatment is usually unnecessary.

Primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is probably much less common in blacks than whites. We reviewed 100 consecutive black patients with retinal detachment who were seen over a 3 year period, and compared them to a randomly selected group of 100 whites seen during the same period.
