MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF ORNITHOSTRONGYLUS QUADRIRADIATUS ISOLATED FROM A RACING PIGEON (COLUMBA LIVIA DOMESTICA).

An infestation of Ornithostrongylus quadriradiatus, has been found in a racing pigeon Columba livia domestica). In addition, this individual had a mild infection with Trichomonas spp. and Eimeria spp. The bird showed symptoms of increased appetite; unformed, dark- green feces; and lack of typical male behavior, but the general condition of this pigeon was good. The pigeon was euthanized because of a permanent inability to fly due to an injury to the wing. A postmortem examination revealed the presence of very small dark-pink twisted nematodes with the morphology of O. quadriradiatus in the sma

An excitatory projection from the basal forebrain to the ventral tegmental area that underlies anorexia-like phenotypes.

Maladaptation in balancing internal energy needs and external threat cues may result in eating disorders. However, brain mechanisms underlying such maladaptations remain elusive. Here, we identified that the basal forebrain (BF) sends glutamatergic projections to glutamatergic neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in mice. Glutamatergic neurons in both regions displayed correlated responses to various stressors. Notably, in vivo manipulation of BF terminals in the VTA revealed that the glutamatergic BF → VTA circuit reduces appetite, increases locomotion, and elicits avoidance. Consisten

Growth differentiation factor 15 neutralization does not impact anorexia or survival in lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation.

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) causes anorexia and weight loss in animal models, and higher circulating levels are associated with cachexia and reduced survival in cancer and other chronic diseases such as sepsis. To investigate the role of sepsis-induced GDF15, we examined whether GDF15 neutralization via a validated and highly potent monoclonal antibody, mAB2, modulates lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anorexia, weight loss, and mortality in rodents. LPS injection transiently increased circulating GDF15 in wild-type mice, decreased food intake and body weight, and increased illness

Subependymal Giant-cell Astrocytoma Masquerading as Restrictive Eating Disorder and Depression in an Adolescent.

Recent studies have shown that psychiatric symptoms might be the only primary manifestation of central nervous system malignancy. As a result, clinicians might overlook a brain tumor diagnosis due to overlying psychiatric symptoms. We herein describe an adolescent female patient without tuberous sclerosis clinical features whose primary presentation for a subependymal giant-cell astrocytoma was restrictive eating disorder, urinary incontinence, and depression. The behavioral symptoms improved significantly following tumor resection. This case illustrates that compression of the frontal lobes a

Emotional dimensions in people with aggressive behavior: differential responses to affective visual stimuli.

INTRODUCTION: The emotional interaction between personal attributes and the environment is a key element to understand aggression. This study identified emotional responses of people with different aggressive traits to pictures with a specific affective content. METHODS: Three hundred fifteen individuals were divided into five groups according to their scores on the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, which consists of 24 pictures of the International Affective Picture System that depict aggression, the suffering of others, filial situations, and sexual content. Each picture was evaluated fo

The small GTPase Rheb affects central brain neuronal morphology and memory formation in Drosophila.

Mutations in either of two tumor suppressor genes, TSC1 or TSC2, cause tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a syndrome resulting in benign hamartomatous tumors and neurological disorders. Cellular growth defects and neuronal disorganization associated with TSC are believed to be due to upregulated TOR signaling. We overexpressed Rheb, an upstream regulator of TOR, in two different subsets of D. melanogaster central brain neurons in order to upregulate the Tsc-Rheb-TOR pathway. Overexpression of Rheb in either the mushroom bodies or the insulin producing cells resulted in enlarged axon projections

Anti-obesity drugs: status quo and recent advances.

Obesity has become a major health problem worldwide. The prevalence and morbidity of obesity-related diseases including diabetes, hypertension, cerebro-cardiovascular diseases, and tumors also have remarkably increased. Treatment of obesity poses a challenge for clinicians. Anti-obesity treatment is helpful to improve and even reverse obesity-related complications. Diet control and physical exercises remain the predominant interventions for obese patients. Anti-obesity drugs can be considered in those who respond poorly to behavioral intervention or those who have developed obesity-related com

Use of drugs in the treatment of obesity.

Obesity has become an epidemic in the United States and in many other countries of the world. Obesity is a chronic disease, not a failure of willpower. Diet, exercise, and behavioral modification of lifestyle are rarely successful over the long term. Medications have been used sparingly, because of concerns about addiction and ineffectiveness, but used chronically, obesity drugs are effective. The two main categories of obesity drugs are centrally active adrenergic and serotonergic agents. These drugs reduce appetite, enhance satiety, and increase energy expenditure. Use of single agents produ

Rapid-onset "need-free" sodium appetite after lesions of the dorsomedial medulla.

Previous studies indicate the dorsomedial hindbrain is important in the maintenance of fluid balance. Lesions centering on the area postrema (AP) result in enhanced ad libitum intake of concentrated saline solutions on a 24-h basis as well as enhanced excretion of water and electrolytes. Additionally, rats with lesions of the AP are reported to have an exaggerated behavioral response to dipsogenic challenges that mimic depletion of the extracellular fluid compartment. In the studies reported here, we have observed that rats with lesions of the AP and immediately adjacent nucleus of the solitar

Genomic analysis reveals potential involvement of the brain-retina axis in regulating chicken feeding behavior.

Feeding behavior is a fundamental biological process closely linked to development, growth, metabolism, and immune regulation in animals. In livestock production, it serves as both an indicator of health status and a selection criterion for breeding programs aimed at improving feed efficiency and adaptive behavior. However, the genetic basis and regulatory mechanisms governing these traits remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the genomic architecture of feeding behavior in 205 slow-growing yellow broilers using whole-genome sequencing and high-resolution behavioral phenotyp

Effects of systemic pretreatment with the NAALADase inhibitor 2-PMPA on oral methamphetamine reinforcement in C57BL/6J mice.

INTRODUCTION: Repeated exposure to methamphetamine (MA) in laboratory rodents induces a sensitization of glutamate release within the corticoaccumbens pathway that drives both the rewarding and reinforcing properties of this highly addictive drug. Such findings argue the potential for pharmaceutical agents inhibiting glutamate release or its postsynaptic actions at glutamate receptors as treatment strategies for MA use disorder. One compound that may accomplish both of these pharmacological actions is the N-acetylated-alpha-linked-acidic dipeptidase (NAALADase) inhibitor 2-(phosphonomethyl)pen

A spatial and projection-based transcriptomic atlas of paraventricular hypothalamic cell types.

The paraventricular hypothalamus (PVH) controls many behavioral and physiologic processes, including appetite, social behavior, autonomic outflow, and pituitary hormone secretion. However, molecular markers for centrally-projecting PVH neuron populations remain largely undefined, and a complete census of PVH cell types has not been established. Therefore, we performed extensive single-cell/nucleus RNA sequencing to catalog PVH neuron subtypes and multiplexed error-robust fluorescence in situ hybridization (MERFISH) to map them spatially. Our spatial transcriptomic atlas resolves 26 Sim1+ and 2

Macrophage related cytokine expressions in depression mouse model induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress.

Depression is characterized by mental retardation, interest blank, hypoactivity, anxiety, appetite loss, sexual dysfunction, sleep disorders and other symptoms. The incidence of depressed patients has demonstrated an upward trend in recent years. Antidepressant drugs are commonly used in modern medicine, but they have the side effect of drug resistance. This study aims to explore the effect of acupuncture stimulation on expressions of macrophage-related cytokines in mice with depression induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), and to explore the underlying immunological mechanism.

The role of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus and the organum vasculosum lateral terminalis in the control of sodium appetite in male rats.

Angiotensin II (AngII) and aldosterone cooperate centrally to produce a robust sodium appetite. The intracellular signaling and circuitry that underlie this interaction remain unspecified. Male rats pretreated with both deoxycorticosterone (DOC; a synthetic precursor of aldosterone) and central AngII exhibited a marked sodium intake, as classically described. Disruption of inositol trisphosphate signaling, but not extracellular-regulated receptor kinase 1 and 2 signaling, prevented the cooperativity of DOC and AngII on sodium intake. The pattern of expression of the immediate early gene produc

Attentional bias in injection phobia: overt components, time course, and relation to behavior.

Blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia is an anxiety disorder that can cause serious health consequences by interfering with medical treatment. Although attentional bias for threat appears to be a core feature of many anxiety disorders and a potential target of treatment, very little is known about attentional bias in BII phobia. In the present study, eye movements were recorded in individuals high and low in injection fear (HIF, LIF) during 18-s exposures to stimulus arrays containing injection, attack, appetitive, and neutral images. Evidence for attentional vigilance was mixed, as HIF individu

Neurophysiological patterns of search and creative behavior in patients with psychoactive substance-induced disorders.

The correlation between search and creative behavior with parameters of bioelectric brain activity was observed in patients with addictive disorders. The prevalence of α- and θ-activities in the parietal-temporal-occipital areas of the cortex and increased θ-activity in the right hemisphere in addiction patients with high search and creative activities were associated with enhanced high-frequency activity in these brain areas. These changes can reflect the formation of a focus of pathologically increased excitation related to the pathogenic mechanisms of addictive disorders.

Contribution of the mesolimbic dopamine system in mediating the effects of leptin and ghrelin on feeding.

Feeding behaviour is crucial for the survival of an organism and is regulated by different brain circuits. Among these circuits the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system is implicated in the anticipation and motivation for food rewards. This system consists of the dopaminergic neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA), and their projections to different cortico-limbic structures such as the nucleus accumbens and medial prefrontal cortex. While the importance of this system in motivational drive for different rewards, including drugs of abuse, has been clearly established, its role in energy balanc

Brain angiotensin AT1 receptors as specific regulators of cardiovascular reactivity to acute psychoemotional stress.

1. Cardiovascular reactivity, an abrupt rise in blood pressure (BP) and heart rate in response to psychoemotional stress, is a risk factor for heart disease. Pharmacological and molecular genetic studies suggest that brain angiotensin (Ang) II and AT(1) receptors are required for the normal expression of sympathetic cardiovascular responses to various psychological stressors. Moreover, overactivity of the brain AngII system may contribute to enhanced cardiovascular reactivity in hypertension. 2. Conversely, brain AT(1) receptors appear to be less important for the regulation of sympathetic car

Pharmaceutical interventions for obesity: a public health perspective.

The prevalence of obesity, a major risk factor for many chronic diseases, has risen in most developed countries over the past several decades. The economic burden for both public and private health care systems is substantial. Although certain non-pharmaceutical interventions have been proven efficacious in specific populations, the lack of scalability has caused many of these programmes to fail in sustainably decreasing the percent of patients who are overweight or obese. The benefits of other interventions, such as pharmaceutical agents, medical devices and surgery, should therefore be caref
