Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and post-streptococcal reactive arthritis (PSRA) are well known complications of streptococcal throat infections. We describe four children with arthritis following a streptococcal throat infection. In addition to arthritis, other clinical manifestations included erythema nodosum, livedo reticularis and cutaneous vasculitis. Because of the very diverse clinical manifestations that may appear after a streptococcal throat infection, we suggest a classification and treatment of post-streptococcal syndromes according to the severity of the disease.

From 1977 onwards international appeals have been made to use the descriptive term 'reactive arthritis' instead of the eponym 'Reiter' in medical literature. However, contrary to English publications the Dutch medical literature is not showing any obvious decline in the use of this eponym. As well as the fact that Reiter was not the first to describe the triad of arthritis, urethritis and conjunctivitis, he also was responsible for lethal medical experiments conducted in concentration camps during World War II. Since these two facts do not warrant eponymous regard for Reiter, the author propos

The analysis of the clinical and HLA profiles of 99 patients with Reiter's syndrome is reported. Antigen HLA-B27, which has previously been firmly associated with Reiter's syndrome, predisposes patients to develop disease features which reflect articular involvement. The HLA haplotype A2, B27 was found to be at an elevated frequency in our Reiter's syndrome sample, and the latter two antigens are also associated with a general increase in disease severity. Conversely, antigen BW35 appears to be protective against certain features of the syndrome. Patients with certain antigenic profiles (namel

Description of a characteristic venereal type of Reiter's disease with a pustular exanthem and a balanitis circinata. In the course of the disease the pustular exanthem probably transformed into a typical Psoriasis vulgaris. In search of genetical markers it was not possible in this case to show the HLA-antigens, which are characteristic of the Reiter's disease and the Psoriasis vulgaris; the HLA-antigens A 10, B7 and B12 however could be proved. The question is up for discussion, wether a HLA-B 27-negative Reiter's disease might include a disposition to the appearance of a phenotypical Psoria

A case of Reiter's syndrome occurring in an 11-year-old, pre-pubertal boy is described. The boy was a heterozygote for the histocompatibility antigen B27 and other arthritic members of his family included his mother with colitic arthritis and an aunt with ankylosing spondylitis. His HLA-B27 negative sibs have remained well. Shigella Salmonella and Yersinia organisms have been previously incriminated as precipitating factors in some patients with Reiter's syndrome but no evidence of recent infection with any of these agents was found in this patient. The case is reported because of the rarity o
