The prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia among Swedish women of child-bearing age has fallen markedly since the mid-1960s. At that time, population studies in Göteborg and Uppsala showed that iron deficiency anaemia was present in about 25-30% of women. Later, in population studies in Göteborg in 1968-69 and 1974-75, the prevalence in the same age group was found to have fallen to 6-7%. Several factors may explain the improved iron status. The level of iron fortification of flour was increased from 30 mg/kg of flour in 1943 to 65 mg in 1970, this increase adjusting the iron intake to compensa

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency predisposes to acute hemolytic crisis when exposed to oxidative stress. Methemoglobinemia occurs as a result of the oxidation of hemoglobin. This eventually affects the oxygen-carrying capacity of the red blood cells, resulting in hypoxemia. There is a reported association between the two conditions. A 12-year-old boy with autism, with no history of hematologic disease, presented with acute hemolysis and respiratory distress. His arterial blood gas showed a methemoglobin level of 6.1%; he received methylene blue in the emergency department.

Infantile Tremor Syndrome is a distinct clinical entity most commonly seen in Indian Subcontinent. Syndrome consists of tremors, mental and developmental retardation, abnormal skin pigmentation and anemia in children between 6 months to 2 years. The etiology is still elusive. Amongst various theories, nutritional theory is the most accepted. So far there are no cases reported of vitamin C deficiency in ITS. In this article, three cases of ITS associated with vitamin C deficiency are reported.

Clinical studies have reported that increased epileptiform and subclinical epileptiform activity can be detected in many patients with an Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis using electroencephalogram (EEG) and this may correlate with poorer cognition. Ascorbate may have a specific role as a neuromodulator in AD as it is released concomitantly with glutamate reuptake following excitatory neurotransmission. Insufficiency may therefore result in an exacerbated excitatory/inhibitory imbalance in neuronal signaling. Using a mouse model of AD that requires dietary ascorbate (Gulo-/-APPswe/PSEN1dE9),

Several blood constituents were used to evaluate the nutritional status of a random, consecutive group of 655 blood donors. The population included 503 men and 152 women, with a mean age of 35.1 years; 26.8% of the women and 26.5% of the men had deficient levels of ascorbic acid; 18.0% of the women an 11.9% of the men had hemoglobin levels below normal. Plasma iron was inadequate in 29.3% of the women and 18.6% of the men. A very small number of donors were found to be deficient in carotene, retinol, thiamine, riboflavin and pyridoxine. These findings call attention to an unexpected aspect of

The list of vitamins recognized as essential in human nutrition is extensive. Only some of them, however, are attributed an important role in public health. The present paper deals with three of these selected because their deficiencies still prevail in important sectors of population in the Latin American Region: vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin D. For each vitamin the paper discusses the scientific bases for their requirements, as well as pragmatic considerations to be taken into account for the derivation of recommended dietary intakes. Reference is made to the logic of applying the concept

Prolidase deficiency is a rare, inherited disorder characterized by ulceration of the skin, mental retardation, and massive urinary excretion of imidodipeptides. Most patients also have recurrent infections, an unusual facial appearance, and splenomegaly. We describe a girl presenting with chronic dermatitis, recurrent respiratory tract infections since her first months of life, and facial features characteristic of prolidase deficiency. The diagnosis of prolidase deficiency was made at 4.5 months of age. The immunologic study in this patient showed an extreme and progressive increase of total

Vitamin E deficiency causes a myopathy in a number of animal species but the mechanism of the damage is obscure. The role of vitamin E in protecting skeletal muscle against exercise-induced damage has been investigated using both in situ and in vitro preparations. Muscles from vitamin E-deficient mice and rats were more prone than normal to damage during contractile activity; the tissue rather than the plasma level of the vitamin is probably the more important factor in this respect. Although vitamin E-deficient muscle was found to be more susceptible to peroxidative damage when stressed with

INTRODUCTION: The wide-reaching consequences of a restrictive diet are often underestimated or poorly recognized both by the public and many physicians. Deficiency symptoms may go unnoticed leading to unnecessary investigations and ineffective treatments, and a delay in a simple and directed treatment: suppletion of the missing nutrients.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case-report describes a 68-year-old man in a high-income country who presented with a 3-week history of painful, indurated edema of the lower legs, immobility due to pain, and dyspnea. Treatment with antibiotics and LMWH was ineffecti

The present work points out the variety of conditions favouring gallstone formation.--Recent research suggests that fibre-depleted, high-fat foods may lead to cholesterol gallstone formation in man. On the other side civilized diets contribute to the carcinogenesis of large bowel.--Experimental observations have indicated that hypovitaminosis C may favour pathogenesis of these diseases in a different way.

1. Chloroform edema. On the backskin of a mouse a wheal was produced by locally applied chloroform containing a fluid rich in protein. It was investigated whether a series of edema-protective drugs, i.e., drugs with anti-inflammatory effect, corticoids, and vascular-active drugs, could inhibit the development of the wheal edema. Only benzarone proved a statistically significant inhibition. The fact that other drugs proved less effective or not at all, could be based on the difference between the mechansim of the chloroform edema and that of other edema models. A reciprocal effect between benza
