INTRODUCTION: Cardiotocography (CTG) is used for fetal surveillance to prevent asphyxia related neonatal outcomes during pregnancy and delivery. In Sweden, all delivery wards have transitioned from CTG registered and printed on paper inside the delivery room, to digital central fetal monitoring where CTG is visible both in the delivery room and on distance for multiple observers. We aimed to evaluate whether the transition from CTG on paper to central fetal monitoring has affected neonatal morbidity.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted as a retrospective cohort study. Data from 8577

BACKGROUND: Although Therapeutic Hypothermia in the last two decades promises hope in reducing the problems of asphyxiated babies in developed countries, it is still not available in most parts of the world, and the results available in developing countries are not promising. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to compare Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) infants receiving total hypothermia (TH) and erythropoietin (EPO). METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, we compared the developmental prognosis of infants with HIE receiving TH (control group, N = 26) with those receiving EPO (case grou

Perinatal asphyxia remains a leading cause of neonatal mortality and a major contributor to permanent neurological deficits. Even mild cases can result in long-term neurodevelopmental, cognitive, behavioural and psychiatric disorders. However, the mechanisms underlying asphyxia-induced hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury remain poorly understood, limiting the development of targeted interventions during the critical early plastic period. To explore the behavioural and molecular outcomes of perinatal asphyxia that may model important aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders observed in humans, we utili

Introduction: The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of cardiac markers in determining prognosis in newborns with Perinatal Asphyxia (PA). Method: Patients with a pH <7-7.15 base deficit -12> mmol/L were defined as PA. NT-proBNP, cardiac Troponin I (cTnI), creatine kinase MB levels were analyzed. Patients with excitus during follow-up were compared with patients with pathological MRI findings and cardiac markers. Results: A total of 115 infants with perinatal asphyxia were included in the study.cTnI levels was median 0.63 (min 0.1-max 4.2) ng/ml significantly higher in patients who died

BACKGROUND: The lack of simple but effective and affordable diagnostic tools presents a challenge for the management of perinatal asphyxia, especially in low- to middle-income countries. Current diagnostic tools, such as arterial blood gas estimation, are expensive and not readily available at primary and secondary levels of care, where most cases of perinatal asphyxia are identified. This causes a delay in diagnosis. Perinatal asphyxia may have improved outcomes if there are cheaper, reliable, and more convenient diagnostic biomarkers that can aid early diagnosis leading to early initiation o

AIM: To describe the long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of asphyxiated neonates treated with hypothermia in association with neonatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings.
METHODS: We evaluated, retrospectively, clinical and radiological single-centre data at 0, 2, and 5 years of age of 53 asphyxiated neonates born between 2005 and 2015. Neonatal cranial MRI was re-evaluated using the Weeke score ranging from 0 (normal finding) to 55 (cerebral devastation) by a single neuroradiologist blinded to patient outcomes. Neurodevelopmental outcomes were evaluated using the Bayley Scales of In

Several risk factors are associated with fetal asphyxia. The main aim of this retrospective, analytical, case-control study was to determine whether assisted reproductive technologies (ART) could be considered one of these factors. In total, 162 cases of fetal asphyxia were compared to 361 controls where this event did not occur. We included 32 ART pregnancies, of which 12 were obtained through egg donations. Overall, 75% (24) of ART pregnancies experienced fetal asphyxia, suggesting ART increases the risk of fetal asphyxia by about 7 times. This finding is consistent with the literature. The

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the commonest movement disorder in childhood. Clinical spectrum of CP is variable and CT scan of brain is an important mode of diagnosis and prognosis in recourse limited set up. This study was done to categorize the CT scan findings and correlate them with the type of motor disturbances of CP patients. This was a cross sectional study done in 100 children diagnosed as CP carried out in Pediatric Neurology unit, BSMMU from July 2009 to July 2010. The patients were randomly selected and CT scan was done in all the patients. Detailed history and clinical examination was do

IMPORTANCE: Despite improvements in antenatal care and increasing cesarean delivery rates, birth asphyxia leading to neonatal encephalopathy (NE) continues to contribute to neonatal death and long-term neurodevelopmental disability. Cardiotocography (CTG) has been used in labor for several decades to detect a stressed fetus so that delivery can be expedited and NE avoided.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether experienced clinicians can detect and respond to abnormal readings from CTGs during the penultimate hour before birth in infants with moderate to severe NE but no acute peripartum event.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal resuscitation is a method of preventing morbidities & mortality from asphyxia. Up to 85% of facilities in sub-Saharan Africa lack supplies or skilled personnel for neonatal resuscitation. Relative to the place of birth and the skill of the birth attendant, a variety of resuscitative practice are employed to make babies cry instead of helping the baby breathe. Many painful procedures are applied when the baby is unable to cry after birth in the absence of a health care worker trained in bag-mask ventilation.
OBJECTIVES: To ascertain the resuscitation practices in communiti

OBJECTIVE: Birth asphyxia is a major newborn mortality problem in low-resource countries. International guideline provides treatment recommendations; however, the importance and effect of the different treatments are not fully explored. The available data are collected in Tanzania, during newborn resuscitation, for analysis of the resuscitation activities and the response of the newborn. An important step in the analysis is to create activity timelines of the episodes, where activities include ventilation, suction, stimulation, etc. Methods: The available recordings are noisy real-world videos

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is one of five countries that account for half of the world's 2.6 million newborn deaths. A quarter of neonatal deaths in Ethiopia are caused by birth asphyxia. Understanding different dimensions of the quality of care for newborns with breathing difficulties can lead to improving service provision environments and practice. We describe facility readiness to treat newborns with breathing difficulties, the extent to which newborn resuscitation is provided, and by modeling the survival of newborns with difficulties breathing, we identify key factors that suggest how mortalit
