The role of the vagus nerve and adrenoceptor stimulation in acid secretion after pylorus-ligation in the rat has been examined. All drugs were administered intraperitoneally. A double-blind study of 90 patients undergoing coronary angiography was performed to determine the safety and efficacy of 0.6 mg atropine sulfate in preventing contrast-induced bradycardia. Coronary angiography performed using the Sones technique resulted in ventricular pauses of greater than 2 seconds in 3 of 49 patients (6%) who received prophylactic atropine and 20 of 41 patients (49%) receiving placebo. A spectrofluorometric assay has been developed for the measurement of LM 5008, a novel antidepressant, in biological fluids. A buccal absorption study in 12 healthy subjects showed increased uptake of LM 5008 under higher pH conditions. 1. This study attempts to elucidate unique heart and blood pressure responses seen in sloths in response to tilting by blocking autonomics with atropine, propranolol, or a combination of these. 2. Atropine produces less heart rate increase in sloths than in other mammals but blocks reflex bradycardia as expected. 3. Propranolol reduces heart rate to about the same degree as in man and completely blocks all cardiac responses to tilting, both direct and reflex. 4. Atropine slightly diminishes blood pressure responses to tilting whereas propranolol tends to augment the already marked increases.
