BACKGROUND: Peer mentorship can be a potential tool to reduce the disparities in health research capacity between high- and low- and middle-income countries. This case study describes the potential of peer mentorship to tackle two critical issues: bridging health research capacity of doctors from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the transformation of human resource for health brain drain into "brain gain".
CASE PRESENTATION: In 2021, a virtual peer mentorship group was established by 16 alumni of the University of Benin College of Medical Sciences' 2008 graduating class, residing

BACKGROUND: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recommend stratification of health indicators by ethnic group, yet there are few studies that have assessed if there are ethnic disparities in childhood immunisation in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs).
METHODS: We identified 64 LMICs with standardised national surveys carried out since 2010, which provided information on ethnicity or a proxy variable and on vaccine coverage; 339 ethnic groups were identified after excluding those with fewer than 50 children in the sample and countries with a single ethnic group. Lack of vacci

BACKGROUND: In 2012 human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, was targeted for elimination as a public health problem, set to be achieved by 2020. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides here the 2018 update on the progress made toward that objective. Global indicators are reviewed, in particular the number of reported cases and the areas at risk. Recently developed indicators for the validation of HAT elimination at the national level are also presented.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: With 977 cases reported in 2018, down from 2,164 in 2016, the main global

OBJECTIVES: One of Africa's most important challenges is to improve maternal and neonatal health. The identification of groups at highest risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes is important for developing and implementing targeted prevention programmes. This study assessed whether young adolescent girls constitute a group at increased risk for adverse birth outcomes among pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa.
SETTING: Data were collected prospectively as part of a large randomised controlled clinical trial evaluating intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (NCT00811421-Clinical

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) presents a complex pathophysiology which can be affected by a number of modifying factors, including genetic and biochemical ones. In Brazil, there have been no studies verifying βS-haplotypes effect on oxidative stress parameters. This study evaluated βS-haplotypes and Hb F levels effects on oxidative stress markers and their relationship with hydroxyurea (HU) treatment in SCA patients.
METHODS: The studied group was composed by 28 SCA patients. Thirteen of these patients were treated with HU and 15 of them were not. We used molecular methodology (PCR-RFL

BACKGROUND: Serious, but rare adverse events following immunization (AEFI) have been reported with yellow fever (YF) 17D vaccine, including severe allergic reactions, YF vaccine-associated neurologic disease (YEL-AND) and YF vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD). The frequency with which YEL-AND and YEL-AVD occur in YF endemic countries is mostly unknown.
METHODS: From 2007 to 2010, eight African countries - Benin, Cameroon, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo- implemented large-scale YF preventive vaccination campaigns. Each country established vaccine pharmac

Sequestration of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes in placental intervillous spaces causes inflammation and pathology. Knowledge of the profiles of immune cells associated with the physiopathology of pregnancy-associated malaria (PAM) is scarce. We conducted a longitudinal, prospective study, both in Benin and Tanzania, including ∼1000 pregnant women in each site with systematic follow-up at scheduled antenatal visits until delivery. We used ex vivo flow cytometry to identify peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) profiles that are associated with PAM and anaemia, determining the p

BACKGROUND: A screening tool for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is useful in low-income countries where it may be difficult to access sleep recordings. The objective of this study was to assess the performance of six screening scores compared with objective sleep recording.
METHODS: This analysis is based on the "Benin Sleep and Society" (BeSAS) study, in which respiratory polygraphy (PG) was performed using a type III device and OSA screening questionnaires (STOP, STOP-Bang, Berlin, NOSAS [≥8 and ≥ 5), No-Apnea, GOAL) were administered to participants. PG-defined OSA severity categories were

BACKGROUND: Malaria during pregnancy can have adverse effects on fetal development, but its impact on neurodevelopment remains unclear. Although some studies have explored the consequences of prenatal malaria, gaps persist due to inconsistencies in exposure timing, assessment methods, and study designs.
METHODS: This systematic review highlighted the gaps in six studies selected from an initial pool of 2029 articles, offering clearer insights into the neurodevelopmental outcomes of prenatal malaria exposure.
RESULTS: Studies from Uganda, Benin, Ghana, and Malawi show that malaria during preg

Tuberculosis remains a leading infectious disease killer in the World Health Organization African Region, with 2.5 million cases and 404,000 deaths in 2023, including 112,000 people with HIV. There is slow progress with only 42% of the 75% targeted reduction in death by 2025. Out of 60,266 estimated multidrug-resistant TB cases in 2023, only 22,515 were notified. Laboratory diagnostic services in the African region still need urgent attention. By 2005, the new smear-positive case detection rate was nearly 51%, falling short of the 70% target. By 2015, the benchmark for one microscopy center pe

INTRODUCTION: Persistent oral infections with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are a potential cause of most oropharyngeal cancers (OPCs). Oral HR-HPV infection and persistence are significantly higher in people living with HIV (PLWH). Most data on oral HR-HPV in PLWH come from developed countries or adult cohorts. This study aims to investigate oral HR-HPV susceptibility and persistence among children and adolescents living with HIV (CALHIV) and to understand the roles of perinatal HIV exposure, infection, antiretroviral treatment, and the oral microbiome.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This p

BACKGROUND: Neonatal deaths contribute up to 32% of early childhood deaths in Nigeria. Most neonatal deaths (75%) occur during the first week of life. Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) programme is an intervention launched in 2010 by The American Academy of Paediatrics and found to be effective in reducing neonatal mortality by 47%. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of HBB training programme and their determinants among Health Care Workers (HCWs) attending a training programme in Benin City.
METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study involving 134 HCWs attending a HBB training progra

OBJECTIVE: About 50%-60% of all cancer cases will require radiotherapy during their treatment. Nonetheless, radiotherapy facilities are limited in low- and middle-income countries and despite high cancer burden in these regions of the world, only 5% have access to radiation therapy. This study identified the location of radiotherapy centers, the types of radiotherapy machines available and the personnel available in each radiotherapy center in Nigeria.
METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study conducted across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria from May 2020 to April 2021. A que

While Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are endemic in West Africa, the prevalence of HBV/HIV coinfection and their associated risk factors in children remains unclear. In this review, we sought to assess HBsAg seroprevalence among 0- to 16-year-olds with and without HIV in West African countries and the risk factors associated with HBV infection in this population. Research articles between 2000 and 2021 that reported the prevalence of HBV and associated risk factors in children in West Africa were retrieved from the literature using the Africa Journals Online

High blood pressure leads to morphologic changes and functional alterations of the myocardial structure. Transthoracic echocardiography is of great clinical interest to evaluate these alterations, using reference values proposed by the American Society of Echocardiography/European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, largely based on studies in Caucasian Whites. We aimed to assess the impact of hypertension on echocardiographic parameters in a sub-Saharan African community, using ethnic-specific reference values. BACKGROUND: Haemoglobinopathies, including sickle cell disease and β-thalassaemia, are monogenic disorders with a relatively higher prevalence among malaria-endemic areas in Africa. Despite this prevalence, most African countries lack the necessary resources for diagnosing and managing these debilitating conditions.
AIM: This study provides a critical review of newborn screening for detecting haemoglobinopathies in Africa, highlighting challenges and proposing strategies for improved diagnosis and management.
METHODS: A literature search on haemoglobinopathies in Africa was conducted in PubM

Pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles funestus is threatening the eradication of malaria. One of the major drivers of pyrethroid resistance in An. funestus are cytochrome P450 monooxygenases CYP6P9a and CYP6P9b, which are found upregulated in resistant An. funestus populations from Sub-Saharan Africa and are known to metabolise pyrethroids. Here, we have functionally expressed CYP6P9a and CYP6P9b variants and investigated their interactions with azole-fungicides and pyrethroids. Some azole fungicides such as prochloraz inhibited CYP6P9a and CYP6P9b at nanomolar concentrations, whereas pyrethroids

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a growing co-morbidity among HIV-infected patients worldwide. With the scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in developing countries, cancer will contribute more and more to the HIV/AIDS disease burden. Our objective was to estimate the association between HIV infection and selected types of cancers among patients hospitalized for diagnosis or treatment of cancer in West Africa.
METHODS: A case-referent study was conducted in referral hospitals in Côte d'Ivoire and Benin. Each participating clinical ward enrolled all adult patients seeking care for a confirmed diagnos
