Functionalized dibenzo[b,d]pyran-6-ones were prepared by formal [3 + 3] cyclization of 1,3-bis(silyl enol ethers) with 3-silyloxy-2-en-1-ones or 1,1-diacetylcyclopropane to give functionalized salicylates, Suzuki cross-coupling reactions of the corresponding triflates, and subsequent BBr3-mediated lactonization. A rapid, selective and sensitive method for the determination of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist, telmisartan, in human plasma has been developed. Telmisartan and the internal standard, diphenhydramine, were extracted from plasma using diethyl ether-dichloromethane (60:40, v/v), and separated on a Zorbax extend C(18) column using methanol-10mM ammonium acetate (85:15, v/v) adjusted to pH 4.5 after mixing with formic acid as mobile phase. A direct injection HPLC method for the sumultaneous measurement of serum paracetamol and salicylate is described using a Pinkerton internal surface reversed-phase column with benzoic acid as internal standard. The method is linear to at least 1000 mg/L for both drugs and shows good precision at levels of 62-500 mg/L. None of the drugs tested for interference affected the quantitation of either drug. In patient samples, the values obtained with this method correlated well with those from enzymatic paracetamol and Trinder salicylate methods.

The case of a trained chemical worker highly sensitive to benzoic acid is described. He suffered from allergic reactions of increasing intensity while being constantly exposed to benzoic acid during work. After oral exposure to benzoic acid he suffered a severe anaphylactic shock and later on showed similar but milder reactions when eating food containing benzoic acid. No allergic reactions reoccurred avoiding every contact with benzoic acid especially observing a strict benzoic acid-free diet.
