Effect of bisphenol A on reproductive processes: A review of in vitro, in vivo and epidemiological studies.

As bisphenol A (BPA) is characterized by a pronounced influence on human hormonal regulation, particular attention has been aimed at understanding its role in reproductive processes in males and females, as well as on fetal development. Owing to the increasing number of alarming reports on the negative consequences of the presence of BPA in human surroundings, more and more studies are being undertaken to clarify the negative effects of BPA on human reproductive processes. The aim of this work was to collect and summarize data on the influence of BPA exposure on reproductive health. Based on a

Exposure assessment of adult intake of bisphenol A (BPA) with emphasis on canned food dietary exposures.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a high-volume, synthetic compound found in epoxy resins and plastics used in food packaging. Food is believed to be a major source of BPA intake. In this study, we measured the concentration of BPA in convenience samplings of foodstuffs purchased in Dallas, Texas. Sampling entailed collection of 204 samples of fresh, frozen, and canned foods in two rounds in 2010. BPA was positive in 73% of the canned food samples, while it was found in only 7% of non-canned foods at low concentrations. The results of this food sampling program were used to calculate adult dietary intakes

Estrogenic exposure alters the spermatogonial stem cells in the developing testis, permanently reducing crossover levels in the adult.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and other endocrine disrupting chemicals have been reported to induce negative effects on a wide range of physiological processes, including reproduction. In the female, BPA exposure increases meiotic errors, resulting in the production of chromosomally abnormal eggs. Although numerous studies have reported that estrogenic exposures negatively impact spermatogenesis, a direct link between exposures and meiotic errors in males has not been evaluated. To test the effect of estrogenic chemicals on meiotic chromosome dynamics, we exposed male mice to either BPA or to the strong s

Bisphenol A Concentrates Preferentially in Human Uterine Leiomyoma and Induces Proliferation in Rat Myometrium.

OBJECTIVES: To measure tissue levels of bisphenol A (BPA) in uterine leiomyoma (ULM), adjacent myometrium (Myo-F), and normal myometrium (Myo-N). Also, we tested the effect of BPA treatment on rat myometrium. METHODS: Uterine leiomyomas and Myo-F tissues were isolated from hysterectomy specimens done to treat symptomatic ULMs (N = 30). Normal myometrium is isolated from hysterectomies done on ULM-free uteri for other benign indications (N = 25). Bisphenol A was measured in 1 g of tissue using solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography, with fluorescence detectors. Exper

Sex-specific effects of long-term exposure to bisphenol-A on anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in adult mice.

Humans are routinely exposed to low levels of bisphenol A (BPA), an environmental endocrine disruptor, which is widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics. The effects of perinatal exposure to BPA have been shown to affect various aspects of social behaviors such as anxiety and depression in adult offspring. Because sex hormones play a critical role in neurobehavior in adulthood, it is possible that long-term exposure to BPA has widespread effects on these emotional behaviors in adulthood. In the present study, adult mice were exposed to BPA at dosages of 0.04, 0.4, 4, 40 mg kg(-1

Bisphenol A effects on the growing mouse oocyte are influenced by diet.

Growing evidence suggests that exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) has the ability to disrupt several different stages of oocyte development. To date, most attention has focused on the effects of BPA on the periovulatory oocyte, and considerable variation is evident in the results of these studies. In our own laboratory, variation in the results of BPA studies conducted at different times appeared to correlate with changes in mill dates of animal feed. This observation, coupled with reports by others that dietary estrogens in feed are a confounding variable in studies of endocrine-disrupting chemica

Effects of bisphenol-A and other endocrine disruptors compared with abnormalities of schizophrenia: an endocrine-disruption theory of schizophrenia.

In recent years, numerous substances have been identified as so-called "endocrine disruptors" because exposure to them results in disruption of normal endocrine function with possible adverse health outcomes. The pathologic and behavioral abnormalities attributed to exposure to endocrine disruptors like bisphenol-A (BPA) have been studied in animals. Mental conditions ranging from cognitive impairment to autism have been linked to BPA exposure by more than one investigation. Concurrent with these developments in BPA research, schizophrenia research has continued to find evidence of possible en

Immunomodulatory effects of Tritan copolyester on human neutrophils.

Eastman Tritan™ copolyester, a novel plastic used as a replacement for bisphenols and manufactured utilizing three monomers, can be released from products, potentially entering biological fluids, and could exert estrogenic activity. Since neutrophils are inflammatory cells that express hormone receptors, we hypothesized that Tritan compounds could modulate neutrophil metabolism and function. Human neutrophils from the blood of healthy male and female donors were exposed in vitro to Tritan monomers, alone or combined with pro-inflammatory cytokines, and assessed for viability, metabolism, surfa

Prenatal Exposure to an EDC Mixture, NeuroMix: Effects on Brain, Behavior, and Stress Responsiveness in Rats.

Humans and wildlife are exposed to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) throughout their lives. Environmental EDCs are implicated in a range of diseases/disorders with developmental origins, including neurodevelopment and behavior. EDCs are most often studied one by one; here, we assessed outcomes induced by a mixture designed to represent the real-world situation of multiple simultaneous exposures. The choice of EDCs, which we refer to as "NeuroMix," was informed by evidence for neurobiological effects in single-compound studies and included bisphenols, phthalates, vinclozolin, and perfluori

Chemical Prioritisation for Human Biomonitoring in Ireland: A Synergy of Global Frameworks and Local Perspectives.

Human biomonitoring (HBM) is a critical scientific tool for assessing human exposure by quantifying chemicals and their metabolites in biological specimens such as blood and urine. This approach provides a comprehensive and accurate evaluation of internal exposures from diverse sources and exposure routes. In Ireland, establishing a national HBM programme requires a systematic chemical prioritisation process that aligns global frameworks with local public perceptions. This study integrates insights from international initiatives such as the European Joint Programme Human Biomonitoring for Euro

Introducing Novel Redox-Active Bis(phenolate) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Proligands: Investigation of Their Coordination to Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Their Catalytic Activity in Transfer Hydrogenation of Carbonyl Compounds.

A simple and efficient procedure for synthesizing novel pincer-type tridentate N-heterocyclic carbene bisphenolate ligands is reported. The synthesis of pincer proligands with N,N'-disubstituted imidazoline core, 5 and 6, was carried out via triethylorthoformate-promoted cyclization of either N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)cyclohexanediamine, 3, or N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexanediamine, 4, in the presence of concentrated hydrochloric acid. Cyclic voltammograms of the ligands revealed ligand-centered redox activity, indicating the noninnocent nature of the ligands. The voltamm

Experimental Exposure to Bisphenol A Has Minimal Effects on Bone Tissue in Growing Rams-A Preliminary Study.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known synthetic compound that belongs to the group of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Although bone tissue is a target for these compounds, studies on BPA-related effects on bone morphology in farm animals are limited. In this preliminary study, we investigated the effects of short-term dietary BPA exposure on femoral morphology, metabolism, mineral content, and biomechanical behavior in rams aged 9-12 months. Fourteen rams of the Istrian Pramenka breed were randomly divided into a BPA group and a control group (seven rams/group) and exposed to 25 µg BPA/kg bw for 6

Oral Administration of Polyethylene Microplastics Induces BPA-Associated Antioxidant Activation and Synaptic-Related Transcriptional Responses in the Rat Prefrontal Cortex.

Background/Objectives: The pervasive presence of microplastics (MPs) and plastic-associated chemicals has raised concerns regarding their potential effects on the central nervous system. Polyethylene (PE), widely used in food-contact materials, can carry bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor with oxidative and neuroactive properties. Although both MPs and BPA can cross biological barriers, their acute effects on the prefrontal cortex (PFC) remain poorly understood. The aim of the study was to evaluate the acute impact of orally administered free BPA, free MPs, and BPA adsorbed onto PE MPs

Di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid-based hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent as a carrier for ferrofluid: application for rapid determination of bisphenol A in water samples.

A hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent composed of di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid and menthol was synthesized and employed as the carrier liquid for the development of a new ferrofluid for liquid-phase microextraction of bisphenol A (BPA) from water samples. The methodology comprised stirring the water sample with a specified volume of ferrofluid, magnetic separation of the phases, and subsequent desorption of BPA using ethanol. No centrifugation was required, and the microextraction process took approximately 3.5 min. The obtained extract was subjected to analysis by high-performance liquid chr

Bisphenol A Exposure Modifies the Vasoactive Response of the Middle Cerebral Artery.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is the most used widely synthetic compound for the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins produced worldwide. Given its androgenic and estrogenic activities, BPA is an endocrine disruptor that is linked to neurological and vascular outcomes, including strokes. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the mechanisms by which a 24 h exposure to BPA (0.002-20 μM) modifies the contractile function of rat middle cerebral artery (MCA) smooth muscle cells (SMCs). Thus, MCA explants were isolated from Wistar rats, and the SMC-MCA vasoactive response was assessed usin

Bisphenol A alters JUN promoter methylation, impairing steroid metabolism in placental cells and linking to sub-representative phenotypes.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely used industrial compound commonly found in various everyday plastic products. Known for its endocrine-disrupting properties, BPA can enter the human body through multiple pathways. Prenatal exposure to BPA not only disrupts placental structure and function but also interferes with normal steroid metabolism. This study investigates the epigenetic regulatory mechanisms by which BPA influences steroid metabolism in the placenta. Using BPA-treated JEG3 cells, we analyzed hormone levels, gene promoter DNA methylation, and gene expression, further validating our finding
