An evaluation of the impact of anti-rabies programs in Nigeria.

UNLABELLED: Rabies remains a significant public health problem in Africa with outbreaks reported in most countries. In Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, rabies causes a significant public health burden partly due to uncoordinated efforts and the ineffectiveness of available anti-rabies programs. We aim to address the current efforts, and challenges associated with the available anti-rabies programs in Nigeria and provide recommendations to tackle these challenges. RESULTS: The anti-rabies programs available in Nigeria are highlighted. They are sponsored by different bodies such as

[Diagnosis and treatment of foreign-body-associated infection in orthopaedic surgery].

Periprosthetic infection is a foreign-body-associated infection that is characterised by delayed osteomyelitis of bone tissue surrounding artificial joint replacement. Most of these infections result from intraoperative bacterial contamination of the prosthetic device implanted. The period from contamination to clinically apparent infection can last months or even years. In these cases, the initial surgical procedure is often not blamed for the actual infection. Moreover, these infections often produce minimal symptoms that can be mistaken for aseptic loosening of the artificial joint replacem

Exploring healthcare professionals' perspectives on neglected tropical diseases in Eastern Uganda: a qualitative study with a focus on schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths.

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and schistosomiasis, continue to impose a heavy burden, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Uganda, despite being preventable. Integration of NTD management into primary healthcare has been inadequate. While researchers have explored community perspectives, there is a notable gap in understanding the viewpoints of healthcare workers (HCW), which is crucial for effective NTD control strategies. This study explores HCW' perspectives in Eastern Uganda, highlighting challenges in schistosomiasis and STH pr

Burden and attributable risk factors of non-communicable diseases and subtypes in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2021: a systematic analysis for the global burden of disease study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Understanding based on up-to-date data on the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is limited, especially regarding how subtypes contribute to the overall NCD burden and the attributable risk factors across locations and subtypes. We aimed to report the global, regional, and national burden of NCDs, subtypes, and attributable risk factors in 2021, and trends from 1990 to 2021 by age, sex, and socio-demographic index (SDI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 to estimate the prevalence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (D

Profiles of Chronic Pain and Cognitive Concerns: A Cluster Analysis Among Older Adults Enrolled in a Mind-body Activity Intervention.

Chronic pain and cognitive concerns are highly comorbid, particularly among older adults, though the specific severity and symptom overlap may vary across individuals. We aimed to characterize distinct profiles of individuals with chronic pain and subjective cognitive concerns (concern of persistent cognitive decline, with or without objective cognitive deficits) and compare demographic/psychosocial variables between subgroups. We analyzed baseline data from an ongoing randomized controlled trial comparing a mind-body activity intervention to a health education control. As part of the larger s

Pushing the Boundaries of Topical Therapy in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis: A Review of Baseline Disease Severity and Burden in Clinical Trials.

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) can be treated with topical or systemic therapies. Here, we review baseline disease severity and burden in clinical trials of topical and systemic therapies to describe the patient populations in which they may be effective. METHODS: PubMed and the Cochrane database were searched from January 1, 2010, to May 1, 2025, to identify manuscripts reporting randomized controlled clinical trials (≥ 30 patients) of topical AD therapies, including those considered advanced (crisaborole ointment, roflumilast cream, ruxolitinib cream, tapinarof cream), and pivotal cli

Prognostic Impact of CCTA According to Standard Cardiovascular Modifiable Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: The prognostic value of coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) findings across standard modifiable risk factor (SMuRF) categories has not been explored. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether SMuRF burden modifies the prognostic value of the different coronary artery disease (CAD) categories on CCTA. METHODS: Patients without prior CAD who underwent clinically indicated CCTA were included. CCTA findings were categorized as absent CAD (0% stenosis), nonobstructive CAD (1% to 49%), or obstructive CAD (≥50%). SMuRF burden was defined by hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and

Chemotherapy-induced loss of bone and muscle mass in a mouse model of breast cancer bone metastases and cachexia.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy used to treat malignancy can lead to loss of skeletal muscle mass and reduced force production, and can reduce bone volume in mice. We have shown that bone-muscle crosstalk is a key nexus in skeletal muscle function and bone homeostasis in osteolytic breast cancer bone metastases. Because chemotherapy has significant negative side effects on bone mass, and because bone loss can drive skeletal muscle weakness, we have examined the effects of chemotherapy on the musculoskeletal system in mice with breast cancer bone metastases. METHODS AND RESULTS: Six-week-old Female a
