PURPOSE: To characterize relationships between propulsion, anthropometry, and performance in Paralympic swimming.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of swimmers (13 male, 15 female) age 20.5 ± 4.4 y was conducted. Subject locomotor categorizations were no physical disability (n = 8, classes S13-S14) and low-severity (n = 11, classes S9-S10) or midseverity disability (n = 9, classes S6-S8). Full anthropometric profiles estimated muscle mass and body fat, a bilateral swim-bench ergometer quantified upper-body power production, and 100-m time trials quantified swimming performance.

We conducted a study to evaluate the effects of genotype (Muscovy, Pekin and their crossbred, hinny and mule) and overfeeding (14 days from 12 weeks of age) on lipid deposition in myofibres and intramuscular adipocytes of breast and thigh muscles of ducks. Therapeutic interventions are limited for high-risk burn patients with caval and intracardiac septic thrombi. Percutaneous thrombectomy represents a less invasive alternative to median sternotomy. However, there is limited literature on application of this approach and outcomes in these patients. We report two cases of patients with large total body surface area burns with similar caval and right intracardiac septic thrombi. Both patients were successfully treated using a percutaneous aspiration device.

Lyells syndrome, also known as toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), is a rare skin disease characterized by a high mortality rate, systemic toxicity and extensive epidermal necrolysis with mucosal erosions. TEN is caused by an allergic autoimmune response, most commonly occurring as a result of an allergic reaction to medication. Our case report describes a nine-year-old boy suffering from Lyells syndrome, with 95% of the body surface area affected.

A 57-year-old black female burned in a house fire sustained 22.5% total body surface area burns. On postburn day 45, she developed Staphylococcus aureus septicemia, and vancomycin was begun. On postburn day 50, quadriplegia developed. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an anterior cervical mass, and cervical drainage of a staphylococcal cervical abscess was conducted. Antibiotics were continued. The patient regained almost complete neurologic function and was discharged doing well.

Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-invasive imaging technology that visualizes heat patterns on the surface of the body. Operative stay was defined as the time from admission until the last operation, postoperative stay as the time from the last operation until discharge.
