BACKGROUND: Traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a common finding following traumatic brain injury. In some cases, it can be associated with hydrocephalus. This type of hemorrhage is mostly caused by the rupture of small vessels in the brain and is usually managed conservatively.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a 60-year-old woman who presented with traumatic luxation of the eye following a fall. This resulted in diffuse SAH (Fisher grade IV) with associated hydrocephalus. We also report on 3 previous similar cases found in the literature. Avulsion of the ophthalmic artery was fo

This case describes an uncommon acute complication of diffuse thrombotic angiopathy and associated aHUS/TTP in an 11-year-old girl with Danon disease who underwent orthotopic heart transplant. Shortly after transplant, despite an uncomplicated operative course, the patient developed severe kidney injury and progressive altered mental status, culminating in cerebral edema, brain herniation, and death. She had received a single dose of tacrolimus (FK506) and a single dose of antithymocyte globulin. Sources of progressive somnolence, including oversedation from impaired renal clearance of opiates

BACKGROUND: Cortical spreading depression (CSD) has been recognized recently as a potential driver of secondary brain injury following traumatic brain injury and subdural hematoma (SDH). It can propagate in metabolically compromised cortical tissue, leading to the spread of ischemia and delayed infarction.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The case is an 87-year-old man with atrial fibrillation on long-term anticoagulation who sustained an unwitnessed fall at home and was only found a day later. On presentation, he was alert but suffering from a profound left-sided hemiparesis, as well as significant dysarth

OBJECTIVES: Literature on invasive neuromonitoring and bilateral decompressive craniectomies (BDC) in patients with refractory status epilepticus (RSE)-mediated hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) is limited. Neuromonitoring can guide decision making and treatment escalation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We report a case of a 17 years-old male who was admitted to our hospital's intensive care unit for RSE. HIBI was detected on neuroimaging on this patient's second day of admission after he developed central diabetes insipidus (DI). Invasive neuromonitoring revealed raised intracranial pressure (ICP)

Neural stem cell (NSC) therapy is an emerging innovative treatment for stroke, traumatic brain injury and neurodegenerative disorders. As compared to intracranial delivery, intra-arterial administration of NSCs is less invasive and produces a more diffuse distribution of NSCs within the brain parenchyma. Further, intra-arterial delivery allows the first-pass effect in the brain circulation, lessening the potential for trapping of cells in peripheral organs, such as liver and spleen, a complication associated with peripheral injections. Here, we detail the methodology, in both mice and rats, fo

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work was to determine the impact of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) on the magnitude and time course of mean diffusivity (MD) changes following hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in newborns.
METHODS: Cerebral MRI scans of infants undergoing whole body TH for HIE from 2007 to 2010 were retrospectively reviewed. The data were analyzed identically to a control group of newborns with HIE previously published, prior to the development of TH. Anatomic injury was defined on T1- and T2-weighted ("late") MRI obtained after the fifth day of life. Since MD values vary r

An 18-year-old man with a history of complete traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) at C5-C7 3 years before presented with unresponsiveness and hypoxia after a fall. There were no overt signs of bruising or swelling. After extensive and unrevealing initial workup, MRI brain without contrast showed numerous diffusely scattered punctate foci of diffusion restriction and evidence of numerous microhemorrhages. A full body skeletal survey revealed mildly affected, nondisplaced, incomplete fractures in the distal femoral metaphyses bilaterally. This case presentation discusses specific considerations f

The aim of the present study was to utilize an experimental traumatic subarachnoidal hemorrhage model in the developing rat. Diffuse brain injury was produced in intubated and ventilated 21 to 25 days old Sprague-Dawley rats (N = 10) using a modification (1 m/100 g) of the Marmarou-model. Before induction of the injury heparin was administered i.v. and antagonised after injury by protamine. Mean arterial blood pressure and intracranial pressure was measured continuously. Histopathological investigations were performed. The results were compared to readings in adult animals (N = 12) subjected t

Sports-related head trauma has emerged as an important public health issue, as mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) may result in neurodegenerative disorders such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Research into mTBI and CTE pathophysiology are difficult to undertake in athletes, with observational trials and post-mortem analysis the current mainstays. Thus, animal models play an important role in the study of mTBI, however, traditional animal models have focused on acute, severe injuries rather than the more typical mTBI's seen in sport injuries. Recently, a number of animal models h

PURPOSE: Excitotoxicity has been linked to the pathogenesis of ocular diseases and injuries and may involve early degeneration of both anterior and posterior visual pathways. However, their spatiotemporal relationships remain unclear. We hypothesized that the effects of excitotoxic retinal injury (ERI) on the visual system can be revealed in vivo by diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imagining (DTI), manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imagining (MRI), and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS: Diffusion tensor MRI was performed at 9.4 Tesla to monitor white matter integrity changes

INTRODUCTION: The combination of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and placental insufficiency (PI) places infants at an increased risk for preterm birth and may worsen brain injury and neurobehavioral outcomes. In this preclinical study, the effect of PAE + PI on lateral, medial, and ventral prefrontal cortex (PFC), striatum and corpus callosum microstructure were investigated using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). These brain regions are important for executive and higher cognitive functions, like cognitive flexibility.
METHODS: Pregnant Long-Evans rat dams voluntarily drank 5% ethanol in sacc
