Computed tomography (CT) resulted in a diagnostic accuracy of 89.2% and 96.1% for medial and lateral meniscal lesions, respectively, in 109 patients who underwent surgery after a direct CT study of the knee joint for a clinically suspected meniscal lesion. The meniscal lesions were the only pathologic condition found in 59 patients, while in 35 patients they were associated with various lesions of the cruciate ligaments (31 cases) and collateral ligaments (15 cases) and with cystic bursitis (6 cases). In the remaining 15 patients, the menisci were normal, but in eight of these cases, lesions o…

Lesions such as bursitis, parametritis and abscesses of the reproductive tract were much more common in cull ewes than in nulliparous sheep, probably having arisen from peripartum infections. BACKGROUND: Animal welfare presents an important topic in pig farming, with numerous resources offering recommendations on welfare improvements. These resources are often based on scientific knowledge, while practical experiences from farmers are rarely considered. This study aimed to bridge this gap in research by comparing scientific experts' and farmers' perceptions of Best Practices to improve on-farm welfare of fattening pigs. Candidate Best Practices to prevent and reduce tail and ear lesions, skin lesions and bursitis were identified in a literature review and integrated into two online…

Revision total hip replacement has traditionally required a trochanteric osteotomy for successful cement removal and component reinsertion. … brous union of the greater trochanter, two cases requiring removal of broken wires for trochanteric bursitis. A detailed surgical technique and representative cases are presented. In carefully selected cases, revision total hip replacement is optimally performed without trochanteric osteotomy. Postoperative trochanteric problems of nonunion, broken wires, …

A Mendelian randomization (MR) study was undertaken to establish a causal link between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and frozen shoulder (FS), examining whether the risk of GERD with FS is mediated through mood fluctuations. Genetic loci from populations of independent European ancestry were selected as instrumental variables for GERD, FS, and mood swings. The primary analysis employed the inverse-variance weighted method supplemented by 3 additional analytical methods. This was conducted using two-sample and two-step MR analyses. This study explored the correlation and mediating effe

Rotator cuff (RC) tears are common injuries leading to significant dysfunction of the shoulder. Rotator cuff tears alter tension and strain in muscles and tendons. Anatomical studies demonstrated that rotator cuff muscles are comprised of anatomical subregions. However, the strain distribution within the rotator cuff tendons generated from the tension from each anatomical subregion is unknown. We hypothesized that subregions would present distinct 3-dimensional (3D) strain distributions within the rotator cuff tendons, and that the anatomical insertion configuration of the supraspinatus (SSP)

BACKGROUND: The Shoulder and Pain Disability Index (SPADI) is a widely used outcome measure. The aim of this study is to explore the reliability and validity of SPADI in a sample of patients with idiopathic frozen shoulder.
METHODS: The SPADI was administered to 124 patients with idiopathic frozen shoulder. A sub-group of 29 patients were retested after 7 days. SPADI scores were correlated with other outcome measures (i.e., Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire - DASH; Numerical Pain Rating Scale-NPRS; and 36-item Short Form Health Survey-SF-36) to examine construct validit

BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is an inflammatory condition affecting the capsule of the glenohumeral joint. It is characterised by a painful restricted range of passive and active movement in all planes of motion. The impact of frozen shoulder on affected individuals remains poorly characterised. In this study we sought to better understand the lived experience of people suffering from frozen shoulder to characterise the physical, psychological and socioeconomic impact of the condition.
METHODS: A qualitative study using a phenomenological approach was undertaken. Purposef

OBJECTIVE: To provide clinicians and patients with accurate risk estimates of serious adverse events after common elective shoulder arthroscopic procedures, including reoperation within one year.
DESIGN: Population based cohort study.
SETTING: Hospital Episode Statistics for NHS England, including civil registration mortality data from the Office for National Statistics.
PARTICIPANTS: 288 250 arthroscopic shoulder procedures performed in 261 248 patients aged ≥16 years between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2017. Elective procedures were grouped into subacromial decompression, rotator cuff repai

The posterior aspect of the elbow is an area prone to chronic wound complications due to its prominence and the tensile forces resulting from elbow range of motion. In situations in which local wound care fails, various options for soft tissue coverage are available, including the anconeus, lateral arm, radial forearm, extensor carpi radialis longus, and flexor carpi ulnaris flaps. Each option offers unique considerations depending on the complexity and extent of the soft tissue defect. In situations in which coverage of a large defect is required, or when primary soft tissue coverage options

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis (AC) is characterized by a limited active and passive motion. Although the exact pathology remains unknown, a number of contributing factors are discussed.
OBJECTIVE: AC has probably been caused by the Re-PUVA therapy (PUVA irradiation plus acitretin) of a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, type mycosis fungoides. Acitretin belongs to the group of retinoids and is often used in cornification disorders.
METHODS: After non-successful initial conservative therapy with intraarticular steroid injections and physical therapy, a significant improvement of shoulder joint mobi

Primary shoulder stiffness is idiopathic. Due to coincidence with other diseases, a systemic genesis with hormonal influence is discussed. The result of chronic inflammation with fibroblastic proliferation is a fibrotic capsule, atrophy of ligaments, and muscular dysbalance. The main symptom is painful restricted passive and active shoulder motion. There is a high rate of unsatisfactory courses. Therapy depends on the phase and duration of shoulder stiffness. Primary treatment of choice is oral steroid therapy, followed by physical and physiotherapy. Steroids can be applied intraarticular, as

A 57-year-old female patient with a history of tophaceous gout based on chronic renal insufficiency caused by systemic lupus erythematosus nephritis developed bursitis of the right lateral malleolus. This was taken for gout and was treated with colchicine and an increased dose of her maintenance therapy of oral glucocorticoids. Since this had no effect, a local diagnostic puncture was performed. Aspiration yielded pus from which Staphylococcus aureus was cultured; upon polarisation microscopy many uric acid crystals were seen. The diagnosis was gout and coincident bacterial infection. Therapy …

We describe a patient whose prepatellar bursa was infected with Sporothrix schenckii. The infection persisted despite itraconazole therapy and cure was achieved only after surgical excision of the bursa. A review of treatments for bursal sporotrichosis is presented.

During the last two decades, sonography has become more and more important in the diagnosis of rheumatic diseases. With the development of high-frequency realtime transducers, detailed images of the musculoskeletal system can be provided. Furthermore, sonography or echocardiography is able to detect systemic manifestations of connective tissue diseases. Compared to plain films, which mainly evaluate bony lesions of inflammatory joint diseases, sonography is used to assess non-bony abnormalities (synovial membrane, cartilage, menisci, tendons) and synovial space. Pannus and effusion as indicato
