Evidence of Viremia in Dairy Cows Naturally Infected with Influenza A Virus, California, USA.

We confirmed influenza A virus (IAV) by PCR in serum from 20 cows on 3 affected dairy farms in California, USA. Our findings indicate the presence of viremia and might help explain IAV transmission dynamics and shedding patterns in cows. An understanding of those dynamics could enable development of IAV mitigation strategies.

Racialization and Reproduction: Asian Immigrants and California's Twentieth-Century Eugenic Sterilization Program.

During the twentieth century, state health authorities in California recommended sterilization for over 20,000 individuals held in state institutions. Asian immigrants occupied a marginalized position in racial, gender, and class hierarchies in California at the height of its eugenic sterilization program. Scholars have documented the disproportionate sterilization of other racialized groups, but little research exists connecting the racist, gendered implementation of Asian immigration restriction to the racism and sexism inherent in eugenics. This study examines patterns of coercive steriliza…

Disseminated Histoplasmosis in a Patient With Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome in a Non-Endemic Region (California).

Histoplasmosis is caused by infection with Histoplasma capsulatum (H. capsulatum). Progressive disseminated histoplasmosis is a more severe … a previous infection. Here, we present the case of a young male patient who presented to a southern California hospital with diarrhea, was diagnosed with AIDS, and developed acute hypoxic respiratory failure. Chest imaging revealed diffuse reticulonodular opacities, and histoplasmosis was confirmed by urine and serologic examination. He was subsequently trea …

Evaluation of Risk Perception of Smoking after the Implementation of California's Tobacco 21 Law.

Decreasing smoking initiation remains a public health priority. In 2016, California, in the United States, enacted the Tobacco 21 law, which raised the minimum age for the purchase of tobacco products from age 18 to age 21. This paper evaluates whether the enactment and implementation of the Tobacco 21 law changed how young adults perceive the risk(s) of smoking. Data were drawn from a cohort of emerging adults (n = 575) in California who were non-daily smokers at enrollment and followed quarterly for 3 years. Data were collected during 2015-2019. Piecewise multilevel regression models were us…

The Impact Of COVID-19 On The Health Of Incarcerated Older Adults In California State Prisons.

The number of older adults (age fifty-five or older) incarcerated in US prisons reached an all-time high just as COVID-19 entered correctional facilities in 2020. However, little is known about COVID-19's impact on incarcerated older adults. We compared COVID-19 outcomes between older and younger adults in California state prisons from March 1, 2020, to October 9, 2021. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) revealed an increasing risk for adverse COVID-19 outcomes among older age groups (ages 55-64, 65-74, and 75 or older) compared with younger adults, including for documented infection (aOR, 1.3, 1.4, …

Clinical Correlates and Outcomes of Methamphetamine-Associated Cardiovascular Diseases in Hospitalized Patients in California.

Background Methamphetamine misuse affects 27 million people worldwide and is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, risk factors for CVD among users have not been well studied. Methods and Results We studied hospitalized patients in California, captured by the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project database, between 2005 and 2011. We studied the association between methamphetamine use and CVD (pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, stroke, and myocardial infarction). Among 20 249 026 persons in the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, 66 199 used methamphetamines (median f…

The air mycobiome is decoupled from the soil mycobiome in the California San Joaquin Valley.

Dispersal is a key force in the assembly of fungal communities and the air is the dominant route of dispersal for most fungi. Understanding the dynamics of airborne fungi is important for determining their source and for helping to prevent fungal disease. This understanding is important in the San Joaquin Valley of California, which is home to 4.2 million people and where the airborne fungus Coccidioides is responsible for the most important fungal disease of otherwise healthy humans, coccidioidomycosis. The San Joaquin Valley is the most productive agricultural region in the United States, wi…

Asymmetry in the frequency and proportion of arm truncation in three sympatric California Octopus species.

Octopuses have eight radially symmetrical arms that surround the base of a bilaterally symmetrical body. These numerous appendages, which explore the environment, handle food, and defend the animal against predators, are highly susceptible to truncation or loss. Here, we used scaling relationships specific to the arms of three sympatric octopus species of the genus Octopus, to calculate the proportion of arm truncation. We then compared the frequency and proportion of arm losses between different body locations. Truncated arms were found in 59.8 % of specimens examined, with individuals bearin

Sources and Toxicity of Mercury in the San Francisco Bay Area, Spanning California and Beyond.

This report synthesizes and evaluates published scientific literature on the environmental occurrence and biomagnification of mercury with emphasis on the San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA), California. Mercury forms various compounds, well known for their toxicity in humans and environmental ecosystems. Elemental mercury is transported and distributed by air, water, and sediments. Through the metabolic processes of algae and bacteria, mercury is converted into organic compounds, such as methylmercury (MeHg), which then bioaccumulates up through trophic levels. In fish, it is found primarily in ske…

A Retrospective Study of Transmissible Viral Proventriculitis in Broiler Chickens in California: 2000-18.

Transmissible viral proventriculitis (TVP) is a disease of chickens, mostly in broilers of 2-8 wk of age. Chicken proventricular necrosis virus (CPNV), a birnavirus, is the etiologic agent. Characteristic gross lesions are enlargement, atony, and pallor of the proventriculus. Cases diagnosed in California between 2000 and 2018 (n = 477), originating from 93 different farms representing all major companies in the region, were analyzed. Frequency of cases varied widely between years, with no recognizable seasonality. The flocks were between 6 and 61 days of age; the average age was 34.0 days, an…

Birth hospital and racial and ethnic differences in severe maternal morbidity in the state of California.

BACKGROUND: Birth hospital has recently emerged as a potential key contributor to disparities in severe maternal morbidity, but investigations on its contribution to racial and ethnic differences remain limited. OBJECTIVE: We leveraged statewide data from California to examine whether birth hospital explained racial and ethnic differences in severe maternal morbidity. STUDY DESIGN: This cohort study used data on all births at ≥20 weeks gestation in California (2007-2012). Severe maternal morbidity during birth hospitalization was measured using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention …

Early genistein exposure of California mice and effects on the gut microbiota-brain axis.

Human offspring encounter high amounts of phytoestrogens, such as genistein (GEN), through maternal diet and soy-based formulas. Such chemicals can exert estrogenic activity and thereby disrupt neurobehavioral programming. Besides inducing direct host effects, GEN might cause gut dysbiosis and alter gut metabolites. To determine whether exposure to GEN affects these parameters, California mice (Peromyscus californicus) dams were placed 2 weeks prior to breeding and throughout gestation and lactation on a diet supplemented with GEN (250 mg/kg feed weight) or AIN93G phytoestrogen-free control di…

Differences in time to injection onset by drug in California: Implications for the emerging heroin epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Heroin use is increasing in the US. Heroin use may predispose users towards injection routes of drug administration as compared to other illicit substances. OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between heroin use and drug injection, we compared time from first use to first injection (referred to as time to injection onset by drug [TTIOD]) of heroin, methamphetamine/speed, cocaine, and crack cocaine among people who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: Age of first use and first injection by drug was collected from 776 PWID. Survival analyses were used to determine TTIOD and to examine

Birth Hospitalization Costs and Days of Care for Mothers and Neonates in California, 2009-2011.

OBJECTIVE: To provide population-based estimates of the hospital-related costs of maternal and newborn care, and how these vary by gestational age and birth weight. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 2009-2011 California in-hospital deliveries at nonfederal hospitals with the infant and maternal discharge data successfully (96%) linked to birth certificates. Cost-to-charge ratios were used to estimate costs from charges. Physician hospital payments were estimated by mean diagnosis related group-specific reimbursement and costs were adjusted for inflation to December 2017 v…

Outbreak of Legionnaires' disease associated with cooling towers at a California state prison, 2015.

A large outbreak of Legionnaires' disease occurred at a California state prison in August 2015. We conducted environmental and epidemiological investigations to identify the most likely source of exposure and characterise morbidity. Sixty-four inmates had probable Legionnaires' disease; 14 had laboratory-confirmed legionellosis. Thirteen (17%) inmates were hospitalised; there were no deaths. Ill inmates were more likely to be ⩾65 years old (P < 0.01), have the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (P < 0.01), diabetes mellitus (P = 0.02), hepatitis C infection (P < 0.01), or end-stage liver di…

Increases in the competitive fitness of West Nile virus isolates after introduction into California.

To investigate the phenotypic evolution of West Nile virus (WNV) in California, we competed sixteen isolates made during 2007-08 against COAV997-5nt, a genetically marked clone from the founding 2003 California isolate COAV997-2003. Using in vivo fitness competitions in House Finches (HOFI) and Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, we found that the majority of WNV WN02 and SW03 genotype isolates exhibited elevated replicative fitness in both hosts compared to COAV997-5nt. Increased replicative capacity in HOFIs was not associated with increased mortality, indicating that these isolates had not gained av…

Distribution and Diversity of Borrelia burgdorferi Sensu Lato Group Bacteria in Sciurids of California.

California has a remarkable diversity of squirrel and chipmunk species (sciurids), and five named and several unnamed genospecies in the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group (BBSL) of bacteria as well, many of which utilize sciurids as reservoirs. We investigated the prevalence, spatial distribution, and diversity of BBSL in sciurids of California by literature search, PCR of 585 ear tissue samples from 15 sciurid species prospectively collected across 19 California counties, and DNA sequencing when possible. Seven publications documented BBSL infections in western gray squirrels (Sciurus gri…
