[Advances in the diagnosis and treatment of capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation syndrome].

Capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation (CM-AVM) syndrome is a rare hereditary vascular disorder encountered in clinical practice. Owing to its complex pathogenesis, heterogeneous clinical manifestations, and challenging diagnostic criteria, CM-AVM syndrome is frequently misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed clinically. Accumulating studies have demonstrated that CM-AVM syndrome is predominantly induced by mutations in the RASA1 and EPHB4 genes. Such genetic aberrations activate the Ras/MAPK signaling pathway, thereby driving the onset and progression of the disease. The primary clinical ha

Investigating the contributions of electrostatic and capillary effects in anti-dust nanostructures.

Dust contamination is a key challenge for deployment of optics in harsh environments, maintenance of photovoltaics, and the pursuit of sustainable interplanetary exploration. In this work, the dust mitigation properties of nanostructured substrates with thin insulating and conductive coatings are investigated. To examine the contribution of capillary, electrostatic, and van der Waals forces to the surface's overall dust adhesion, the relative humidity is varied to control their relative contributions. Experiments show that samples with conductive coatings can have up to 91.0% less coverage tha

Theory of capillary-induced self-coacervation in zwitterionic polymer solutions.

This study presents a mean-field theory for zwitterionic polymer solutions confined within attractive slit-like nanopores. Building upon our prior model for self-coacervation [Budkov et al., Soft Matter 19, 3281-3289 (2023)], we demonstrate that strong electrostatic dipole-dipole correlations between monomeric units, coupled with attraction to pore walls, can induce capillary-driven liquid-liquid phase separation inside the pore-a phenomenon we term capillary-induced self-coacervation. Using a thermomechanical approach (Budkov et al., J. Stat. Mech.: Theory Exp. 2024, 123201), we calculate the

Nonlinear modal evolution of microbubbles confined by rigid capillary constraint.

The nonlinear modal evolution of confined bubbles was investigated by applying modulated acoustic pressure in capillaries. Within a modulation envelope of the pressure, the bubble undergoes a morphological evolution cycle, including spherical oscillation, unstable deformation, surface mode and recovery to breathing mode. This cyclic process depends on bubble size, acoustic pressure and frequency, as well as capillary shape, while also relating to the translational state of the bubble. However, acoustic condition and constrains should be the dominant factors. The time-resolved radius reveals th…

Estimation of the shear modulus of unsaturated soils using the capillary model.

The shear modulus is a fundamental parameter for evaluating soil deformation and stiffness. It is influenced by various factors, including void ratio, confining pressure, soil type, and soil suction (or degree of saturation). Similar to the coefficient of permeability of unsaturated soils, the shear modulus of unsaturated soils can vary significantly with changes in soil suction. Numerous empirical models have been proposed to describe the shear modulus of unsaturated soils. However, many existing models adopt either soil suction or degree of saturation (or water content) as a single independe

Pulmonary Capillary Confinement Shapes A Motile Anuclear Neutrophil State.

The nucleus is a major mechanical constraint for cells moving through confined spaces, but how organ-specific physical environments shape nuclear state and cell behavior in vivo remains unclear. Using quantitative intravital imaging with submicron stabilization of the breathing lung, we tracked neutrophil deformation, Ca2+ dynamics, nuclear state and motility over time. In inflamed pulmonary capillaries, neutrophil deformation was temporally coupled to transient Ca2+ increases, and this coupling was reduced by the mechanosensitive-channel inhibitor GsMTx4. We identified abundant neutrophil-der…

Expanding the Phenotype of STAMBP-Related Microcephaly-Capillary Malformation Syndrome.

Biallelic variants in the STAMBP gene are known to cause Microcephaly-capillary malformation syndrome (MICCAP syndrome). Here we report an 18-month-old female with a novel splice site variant, c.376-1G>A in intron-4, with the phenotype of a patient who presented to us with fetal onset growth retardation, developmental delay, drug-resistant seizures, multiple capillary malformations, dysmorphism, tone abnormalities, and distal skeletal and nail abnormalities. Functional studies by RNA analysis and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) showed that the variant leads to loss of function. T

Uremic Toxins and the Lung Alveolar Capillary Barrier: A Narrative Review.

INTRODUCTION: Uremic toxins have been shown to cause adverse pulmonary effects by inducing endothelial and epithelial dysfunction, disrupting the alveolar-capillary barrier, and increasing inflammation and oxidative stress. This article reviews these effects with a specific focus on chronic kidney disease and the mechanisms by which uremic toxins affect lung tissue. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using keywords related to uremic toxins and lung injury to search the PubMed database. An advanced literature review was conducted in PubMed to identify studies explaining the mechanisms u

Phototunable hydrogel mechanics for spatial guidance of blood capillary morphogenesis.

Creating large, functional tissue requires the engineering of a blood capillary network, which is challenging as it necessitates the recapitulation of capillary morphology and spatial distribution. Current approaches employ local mechanical and chemical gradients to modulate capillary morphology or the network's density but they often fail to regulate both parameters to fulfill the needs of tissue engineering. Here, we present a light-mediated biomaterial platform based on the FLight biofabrication technique to regulate blood capillary alignment and density. By modulating local light doses, a

Leukocyte-endothelial interactions and brain capillary function in neurological diseases.

Enhanced leukocyte-endothelial interactions are a hallmark pathological feature in brain disease. Preclinical studies have demonstrated increased leukocyte adhesion at the capillary level as a major contributor to cerebral blood flow (CBF) reductions across diverse neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, ischemic stroke, and epilepsy. Remarkably, even modest levels of capillary obstruction (2%-5%) lead to disproportionate reductions in cerebral perfusion at the network level. Beyond acute perfusion deficits, chronic leukocyte obstruction contributes to long-term consequences suc

Physiological limits of capillary refill time: a human endotoxemia study.

BACKGROUND: The capillary refill test is a widely used bedside marker of tissue perfusion, but its reliability during acute inflammation is not well characterised. The guiding 3-s threshold rests on limited physiological validation and on visual assessment with high observer variability. How finger capillary refill time (CRT) behaves during acute inflammation remains unclear. Using quantitative capillary refill time (qCRT), which removes observer variability, we determined how finger qCRT behaves over an acute inflammatory episode in a controlled human endotoxemia model. METHODS: In a double-

The Association of Retinal Capillary Density and Retinal Thickness in Diabetic Retinopathy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between retinal vascular density and retinal thickness (RT) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in subjects with diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: OCTA scans were obtained on non-diabetic (control) and subjects with DR. DR was classified as mild nonproliferative DR (NPDR) or referable DR (moderate NPDR and worse) based on color fundus photographs. Full, superficial, and deep RT were quantified. Corresponding layer-specific capillary densities were quantified as vessel skeleton density (VSD) with and withou

Capillary constrictions prime cancer cell tumorigenicity through PIEZO1.

Metastasis is responsible for most cancer-related deaths. However, only a fraction of circulating cancer cells succeed in forming secondary tumours, indicating that adaptive mechanisms during circulation play a part in dissemination. Here, we report that constriction during microcapillary transit triggers reprogramming of melanoma cells to a tumorigenic cancer stem cell-like state. Using a microfluidic device mimicking physiological flow rates and gradual capillary narrowing, we show that compression through narrow channels causes cell and nuclear deformation, rapid chromatin remodelling and i

Distinct populations of lung capillary endothelial cells and their functional significance.

The role of the lung's microcirculation and capillary endothelial cells in normal physiology and the pathobiology of pulmonary diseases is obviously vital. The recent discovery of molecularly distinct aerocytes and general capillary (gCaps) endothelial cells by single-cell transcriptomics (scRNAseq) advanced the field in understanding microcirculatory milieu and cellular communications. However, increasing evidence from different groups indicated the possibility of a more heterogeneous nature of lung capillaries. Therefore, we investigated enriched lung endothelial cells by scRNAseq and identi…
