STUDY OBJECTIVE: Pre-anesthesia evaluation (PAE) is designed to reduce patient and family anxiety, identify pre-existing health issues, avoid surgical delays, minimize costs, and tailor an anesthetic plan. If PAE requires a clinic visit, patients must take time off work and may incur travel and childcare costs. A telephone-based Preoperative Assessment Clinic can minimize patient inconvenience, while maintaining high-quality patient care and improving efficiency. We assessed patient satisfaction with a telephone PAE and determined whether patients preferred a telephone PAE or a conventional cl

BACKGROUND: Epidemics of meningococcal meningitis (MM) recurrently strike the African Meningitis Belt. This study aimed at investigating factors, still poorly understood, that influence annual incidence of MM serogroup A, the main etiologic agent over 2004-2010, at a fine spatial scale in Niger.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To take into account data dependencies over space and time and control for unobserved confounding factors, we developed an explanatory Bayesian hierarchical model over 2004-2010 at the health centre catchment area (HCCA) level. The multivariate model revealed that both

BACKGROUND: The use of family planning contraceptives is an essential feature of reproductive health and rights, and safeguards women's health. Sudan is among the countries with the lowest prevalence of family planning use in Africa. The social construction of gender norms related to preference for increased fertility and family planning decisions resides in the assumption that husbands play a limiting role in their wives' access to family planning use. This study aims to examine to what extent husbands' preference for increased fertility is reflected in their wives' contraceptive use and whet

BACKGROUND: Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are a critical public health problem leading to significant morbidity, mortality, and socioeconomic losses. Despite known risk factors like substance use and sleep-related problems, there is limited research on the prevalence of these factors among drivers who met with RTAs. Hence, this study aimed to gain insight into the prevalence of substance use and sleep-related problems among this population attending a trauma center in the northern State of India.
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 383 driver victims (DVs) who presented t

OBJECTIVES: Childhood maltreatment is a robust risk factor for poor physical and mental health. Child welfare youths represent a high-risk group, given the greater likelihood of severe or multiple types of maltreatment. This study examined the relationship between childhood maltreatment and self-compassion - a concept of positive acceptance of self. While not applied previously to a child welfare sample, self-compassion may be of value in understanding impairment among maltreatment victims. This may be most pertinent in adolescence and young adulthood, when self-identity is a focal development

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global human health threat and wastewater analysis of antibiotics can help inform AMR policies. Accurate quantification of antibiotic use in urban populations is needed. This requires analytical methods capable of high sample throughput to support short-term laboratory antibiotic fate investigations where large sample numbers are generated, and sub-µg L-1 quantification limits for wastewater monitoring studies. Therefore, a direct injection ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for 11 represe

BACKGROUND: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has been proven to be an effective treatment for large vessel acute ischemic strokes. A debate is ongoing about whether to use the mothership or the drip-and-ship strategy for stroke patient transfers. Precious time could be lost if prehospital triage is incorrect. Combining a helicopter with an ambulance on the ground may further reduce prehospital delays.
METHODS: We conducted a single MT-capable center mathematical model study to assess how many individuals could reach Tampere University Hospital (Tays) within a 120-minute time limit. Population dat

PURPOSE: Backover trauma occurs when a reversing motorized vehicle strikes a pedestrian, often a small child. Injuries carry significant morbidity and mortality. A federal mandate required newly manufactured motor vehicles to meet a rear visibility standard by May 2018. This study characterizes the mandate's impact on pediatric backover trauma.
METHODS: A retrospective pre-post observational study was conducted of children (<5 years) with backover trauma (01/2011-11/2024). Two datasets were utilized: trauma registries from two Level I pediatric trauma centers serving a single catchment area,

BACKGROUND: One out of eight men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Black men are more likely to be diagnosed with and die from prostate cancer than other males, contributing to significant prostate cancer disparities. Early detection, often by routine screening, allows for more options for treatment and an increased chance of survival. Barriers to screening contribute to prostate cancer disparities, particularly among those who lack regular access to health care. Community based screening programs may overcome barriers to prostate cancer screening. METHODS

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the top ten global health threats, and current surveillance programs rarely monitor it outside healthcare settings. This limits our ability to understand and manage the spread of AMR. Wastewater testing has the potential to simply, reliably and continuously survey trends in AMR outside the healthcare settings, as it captures biological material from the entire community. To establish and evaluate such a surveillance, we monitored wastewater for four clinically significant pathogens across the urban area of Greater Sydney, Australia. Untreated wastewater

Estimation of consumption of illicit drugs by wastewater-based epidemiology provides estimates of community drug-use patterns. This study describes monitoring data of three illicit drugs in New Zealand using wastewater-based epidemiology. Wastewater samples were collected at monthly intervals for larger (population ~ 50,000+) cities or in smaller towns where more data was required by authorities. In other smaller towns, samples were collected every 2 months. Samples were extracted and analysed for parent compounds and metabolites of methamphetamine, MDMA, cocaine, heroin and fentanyl consumpti

OBJECTIVE: WHO's new Global Plan to Stop TB 2006-2015 advises countries with a high burden of tuberculosis (TB) to expand case-finding in the private sector as well as services for patients with HIV and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). The objective of this study was to evaluate these strategies in Thailand using data from the Thailand TB Active Surveillance Network, a demonstration project begun in 2004.
METHODS: In October 2004, we began contacting public and private health-care facilities monthly to record data about people diagnosed with TB, assist with patient care, provide HIV counselli

Tick distribution and abundance is influenced by several factors that include micro-climate and environmental and host factors. Contextual understanding of the role played by these factors is critical to guide control measures. The aim of this study was to determine the predictive value of these factors for changes in tick distribution and abundance at the livestock-wildlife interface of the lower Okavango Delta. A two-stage quota sampling design was adopted to select 30 clusters of seven cattle each for tick investigation. Tick investigation was done by lifting the tail to count the total num
