An 18-month-old, spayed female, domestic shorthaired cat was presented with clinical signs of depression and reluctance to walk, which progressed to nonambulatory tetraparesis. Increased opacification of both frontal sinuses and a cyst-like abnormality causing compression and displacement of the right frontal lobe were seen on computed tomography. Bilateral frontal sinus trephination and right transfrontal craniotomy revealed clear, viscous fluid in the right frontal sinus and rostral fossa, compatible with an intracranial mucocele. At a 6-month follow-up examination, no signs of recurrence we

A 12-year-old, FIV-positive domestic cat from rural Northland presented with diffuse and slowly progressive swellings of the vulva, tail base, head, and distal limbs. Fine needle aspirate biopsy of the subcutis revealed large numbers of pleomorphic acid fast bacteria. At necropsy, the dermis and subcutis in the affected areas were expanded by a pale yellow opaque infiltrate. Large ulcerated cutaneous swellings were present in the left maxillary area and bilaterally at the point of the jaw corresponding to the submandibular lymph nodes. Cutaneous nodules were present in the pre-auricular area.

A 22-month-old male Japanese mongrel cat with a history of dysuria and recurrent generalised tonic-clonic seizure was examined by neuro-opthalmological testing and computed tomography (CT). Vision testing revealed narrowing of the visual field in the right eye, and complete visual deficits in the left eye. Pupillary reactions, and motor and sensory function in the eyelids and the eyes were normal. The cat was diagnosed as hydrocephalus by CT examination, because dilation of the right lateral ventricle, and compression of the right temporal and occipital cortices was shown. The etiology of the

A 3-year-old, 4-kg, castrated male domestic shorthair cat presented with signs of progressive respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs showed pulmonary edema and pleural effusion. Echocardiography revealed a perforate membrane immediately above the mitral valve that divided the left atrium into proximal and distal chambers. The left auricle was proximal to the dividing membrane and connected to the markedly enlarged proximal left atrial chamber, consistent with the diagnosis of supravalvular mitral stenosis (SMS). Position of the obstructing membrane relative to the left auricle distinguishe

In the December issue of Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, the following case report was published with several errors. The corrected version of this case report follows in full. The publishers apologise for this error. A 7-year-old spayed domestic shorthaired cat presented with a history of having two seizures in the previous 6 weeks. During the seizures, the cat lost consciousness, paddled its limbs, rolled and urinated. There were no pre-ictal signs but the cat was weak and unable to walk normally in the post-ictal period.

Cat-scratch disease is an infection caused by Bartonella henselae, a fastidious gram-negative bacillus acquired from exposure to an infected kitten or cat. The most common manifestation of human disease is lymphadenitis. Atypical forms of infection include Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome, stellate neuroretinitis, persistent fever without localizing signs, hepatosplenic infection, encephalopathy, osteomyelitis, and endocarditis. Immunocompromised individuals with B. hensalae infection may develop bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis, and relapsing bacteremia with fever syndrome. The baci

Clinical signs of orbital disease include exophthalmos, strabismus, or, less commonly, enophthalmos. Fungal orbital disease is uncommon. A case of nasal, frontal sinus, and orbital aspergillosis in a cat is described. Diagnostics for exophthalmos and therapy for retrobulbar abscesses are discussed.

A heart murmur was detected in a five-month-old Persian chinchilla cat. The animal was referred to Nihon University Animal Medical Center where radiographic examination revealed an enlarged heart with dilation of pulmonary arteries and veins and pulmonary oedema. Echocardiography revealed partition of the left atrium, with turbulent blood flow within the left atrium. The patient was placed under continuous care at the facility, but died at seven months of age. Postmortem examination revealed that the left atrium was partitioned by a fibromuscular septum, with a 1 mm diameter perforation, consi

An 11-year-old male domestic shorthaired cat was presented with behavioural disturbances and abdominal distension of two days' duration. Haemobartonella felis was found on routine haematology and serum biochemistry showed mild azotaemia. Abdominocentesis revealed a transudate. Bilateral perinephric fluid accumulations were observed on ultrasonography and chronic nephrosclerosis was diagnosed on needle biopsies of the kidney. A celiotomy with resection of the major portion of both cyst walls was performed. The omentum was extended along the floor of the abdomen, across the ventral aspect of bot

An indirect fluorescent antibody test for Bartonella henselae, B quintana, and B elizabethae was performed in all 18 children who presented to our paediatric outpatient clinic with cat scratch disease over a six year period. Serum samples were taken on admission, after 15 days, and after six months. Diagnosis was confirmed in 15 patients (83%) and was based on seroconversion or a fourfold change of the antibody titre to B henselae in 12 patients and on a single high titre (> 128) in three patients. Lymphadenopathy was present in all patients, erythema nodosum in one, osteomyelitis in one, hepa

Neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis was diagnosed in a young adult domestic short-haired cat euthanatized because of severe progressive neurologic disease. Clinical signs included blindness, seizures, and decreased mentation. An autofluorescent pigment, identified as ceroid-lipofuscin by electron microscopy and staining properties, was found within neurons of the central and peripheral nervous systems. A diffuse reactive astrocytosis accompanied by multifocal microgliosis was visible in all areas of the brain. Retinal atrophy with intraneuronal lipopigment accumulation was also identified. Contrary
