[Iniencephaly: description of a case].

We report on a spontaneously aborted female fetus with iniencephaly. Iniencephaly is an uncommon, but not rare, abnormality which is characterized by defect of the squamous part of the occipital bone, and body and arch of the cervical vertebrae; by prolapse of the brain from distended occipital foramen; by severe lordosis with consequent uptilting face; and often by spina bifida. Iniencephaly may be associated with several other defects. The fetus reported here had no other defects.

Hemifacial microsomia: an anesthetic airway problem.

Hemifacial microsomia is a rare congenitally acquired dentofacial deformity characterized by unilateral hypoplasia of the hard and soft tissues of the face and cranium. Associated anomalies of the vertebrae and hypopharynx cause perioperative airway management to be difficult. The case of a patient with severe heimfacial microsomia, cervical spine fusion, and temporomandibular joint ankylosis is presented, with special emphasis on anesthetic airway management. A device to aid fiberoptic nasolaryngoscopy when difficult endotracheal intubations are encountered is described.

Mouthpiece Noninvasive Ventilation in a Patient With Traumatic Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Report.

The use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has been associated with improved patient satisfaction and comfort compared to tracheostomy in patients who are ventilator dependent. We present a case of a young man who fell off a platform and sustained a traumatic third and fourth cervical vertebrae (C3/4) fracture dislocation with bilateral facet dislocation, in whom a trial of mouthpiece NIV was attempted. We discuss the issues surrounding this method of ventilation in ventilator-dependent patients.

Paraplegia in osteogenesis imperfecta. A case report.

Paraplegia occurred in an adolescent girl with osteogenesis imperfecta after chiropractic manipulation. The child had been able to walk freely out of doors. Complete motor paralysis with sensory sparing resulted due to anterior compression of the cord by spondyloptotic cervical vertebrae. Reconstructed computerised tomography was very helpful in demonstrating the abnormality. Anterior and then posterior decompression relieved the tethered spinal cord and were supplemented with bone grafting. Early diagnosis and surgical treatment will prevent similar neurological accidents.

[Cervical spondylosis].

Japan has now become an aging society. In 2014, people aged more than 65 years old accounted for 25.1% of Japan's entire population. Aging is associated with an increased risk of problems related to the locomotive organs. Deterioration of locomotive ability causes falls or tumbles, which would be a threat to good health and longevity of aged people. To maintain the locomotive ability of the elderly, therefore, the Japanese Orthopaedic Association starts a campaign to promote awareness and prevention of "locomotive syndrome". Cervical spondylosis is a disorder for age-related wear affecting the

Suspected cervical spinal cord vascular anomaly in an African warthog (Phacochoerus africanus).

Vascular myelopathies of the spinal cord have not been described in Suidae, and are a rare finding in companion animals. An 8.5-yr female African warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) presented with an acute onset of tetraparesis. Based on neurologic findings, a cervical spinal cord lesion between C7-T2 was suspected. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed severe intramedullary hemorrhage with suspected abnormal vessels in the spinal cord at the level of the seventh cervical vertebrae. The acute onset of clinical signs and rapid deterioration of neurological status precluded surgical managements. A va…

Cervical vertebral fractures in 56 dogs: a retrospective study.

The clinicopathological features of cervical fractures in 56 dogs were reviewed. "Hit by car" (HBC) was the most common inciting cause, and the axis and atlas were the vertebrae most frequently affected. Surgical treatment was associated with high (36%) perioperative mortality. However, all dogs that survived the perioperative period achieved functional recovery. Functional recovery was achieved in 25 (89%) of 28 nonsurgically treated dogs with adequate follow-up. Overall, severity of neurological deficits (nonambulatory status) and prolonged interval (five days or longer) from trauma to refer

Fatal cerebritis and ventriculitis secondary to tracheoesophageal prosthesis.

Tracheoesophageal puncture and voice prosthesis placement is the preferred method of voice restoration following total laryngectomy. Although this is a safe and effective means of optimizing voice, severe complications can occur. We present the case of a patient who developed cerebritis and ventriculitis secondary to a tracheoesophageal prosthesis eroding his cervical vertebrae 20 years following pharyngo-laryngo-esophagectomy. Despite optimal antimicrobial therapy, he deteriorated and succumbed to his disease. Although tracheoesophageal prostheses are a safe and effective means of voice resto…

Subarachnoid diverticulum associated with feline infectious peritonitis in a Siberian cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 7-month-old Siberian cat was presented for investigation of acute onset multifocal neurological deficits. Neurological examination documented dull mental status and an ambulatory left hemiparesis. Serum biochemistry documented marked hyperglobulinaemia. MRI of the brain identified marked leptomeningeal contrast enhancement extending along the brainstem caudally to involve the cranial cervical spinal cord. MRI of the cervical spine further identified a subarachnoid diverticulum that extended from the level of the obex to the C2-C3 vertebrae. Cerebrospinal fluid quantitative RT-P

Cervical Spine Spondylitis with an Epidural Abscess in a Patient with Brucellosis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Human brucellosis, the most prevalent zoonotic disease worldwide, is a systemic infection which can involve several organs. Among musculoskeletal complaints, spondylitis is the most frequent complication of brucellosis and primarily affects the lumbar and thoracic vertebrae. The involvement of the cervical spine is infrequent. CASE REPORT: This case report concerns an unusual case of cervical spine spondylitis with an epidural abscess due to Brucella in a 43-year-old man. The diagnosis was based on the patient being domiciled in an endemic region, his symptoms and his occupation

Cervical myelo-radiculopathy in athetoid cerebral palsy.

Cervical myelopathy complicating athetoid cerebral palsy has not been adequately highlighted in the literature. We report two cases of patients with athetoid cerebral palsy and long histories of involuntary movements who developed cervical myelo-radiculopathy. Dystonic athetoid neck movements may cause excessive axial neck rotation as well as flexion and extension movements of the spine. These repetitive exaggerated movements may result in early degenerative changes of the vertebrae which may enhance the myelo-radiculopathy. The two patients were treated with combined anterior and posterior fu

Just a drop of cement: a case of cervical spine bone aneurysmal cyst successfully treated by percutaneous injection of a small amount of polymethyl-methacrylate cement.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign hemorrhagic tumor, commonly revealed by local pain. The best treatment for this lesion is still controversial. We report the case of a patient with chronic neck pain revealing an ABC of the third cervical vertebra. After percutaneous injection of a small amount of polymethyl-methacrylate bone cement, the patient experienced significant clinical and radiological improvement.

[X-ray computed tomographic aspects of spinal aneurysmal cysts in children].

The interest of CT imaging in a case of aneurysmal bone cyst of the posterior arch of the 6th cervical vertebra in a 10 y.o. child is underlined. The value of intra tumoral densities which are relatively low, inferior to 100 Hounsfield unit is stressed but the most contributory feature in this case was the presence of a fluid level inside the cyst due to different densities of fluid components into the cyst.

Prevalence and patterns of scoliosis in children with multiple pterygium syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Although scoliosis is a predominant feature of multiple pterygium syndrome (MPS), the pattern of deformity and the progression of the curvature have not been well described. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of scoliosis among patients with MPS, and to characterize the abnormalities of the vertebrae and to assess the progression of the scoliosis. METHODS: From 1969 to 2008, we identified 19 patients with MPS but only 16 patients (8 boys and 8 girls) had complete data. Medical records and radiographs of these 16 patients were reviewed. Magnetic resonance imagin

Traumatic C6-C7 Fracture-Dislocation with Surgical Correction of Anterior Hardware Fusion Failure and Neglected Locked Facet: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The cervical spine represents the most common site of spinal trauma, typically associated with vertebrae dislocation with locked facets. Accurate assessment of the entire spine is essential to prevent diagnostic and therapeutic failures. Here, we present a case of a patient with C6-C7 dislocation who underwent two unsuccessful surgical procedures, highlighting the technical challenges associated with revision surgery and persistent facet locking. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 26-year-old male arrived at an emergency hospital after a motorcycle accident with paraplegia, C6 roots strength gra

A novel surgical technique for treatment of cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (wobbler syndrome) in a filly.

Cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (CVSM), also known as equine wobbler syndrome or cervical ataxia, is a devastating neurological syndrome resulting from compression of the spinal cord at the cervical region. This report describes a novel surgical technique for treatment of 16-month-old Arabian filly with CVSM. The filly showed grade 4 ataxia, hypermetria, weakness of the hind limbs, stumbling during walking, and abnormal gait. Case history, clinical signs and myelography revealed spinal cord compression between the C3 and C4 and C4-C5. The filly underwent a novel surgical interference fo

Torticollis as a sign of spinal tuberculosis.

Bone localization of tuberculosis mainly affects the thoracolumbar spine. The cervical spine is rare. Its diagnosis is often late which exposes to great instability and potentially serious complications. We report the case of a 12-year old girl with no medical history, showing torticollis and high temperature without neurological complication. In the physical examination, he had torticollis and pain in the third, fourth and fifth cervical vertebra. When the biopsy was performed, we find an inter apophysis (between C7 and D1) collection. The histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a

Multilobular tumour of bone with no abnormalities on plain radiography in a dog.

A seven-year-old neutered female golden retriever was presented for an acute onset of cervical pain and ataxia. Intervertebral disc disease or neoplasia was suspected. There was no evidence of a soft tissue or bony mass on physical examination or survey radiographs. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis did not show any evidence of a neoplastic process. Myelographic evaluation identified an extradural mass lesion extending from inside the calvarium to the mid-body of the first cervical vertebra. No additional diagnostic tests were performed as the owners elected for euthanasia because of the high possi

Anterior displacement of the mandible for better exposure of the distal segment of the extracranial carotid artery.

Anterior displacement of the mandible (ADM) was performed in 34 patients undergoing surgery for malformations or atheromatous lesions of the distal segment of the extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA). This procedure greatly facilitates surgical access to the upper cervical region and has several advantages over mandibulotomy-mandibulectomy, namely: A shorter operating time, sparing of the inferior alveolar nerve and of the mandibular branch of cranial nerve VII, with no need for post-operative immobilization of the mandible. ADM permits the correction of ICA lesions extending as far as t
