Stereotyped behaviour in children with autism and intellectual disability: an examination of the executive dysfunction hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Increasing attention has been paid to the executive dysfunction hypothesis argued to underpin stereotyped behaviour in autism. The aim of this study is to investigate one component of this model, that stereotyped behaviours are related to impaired generativity and compromised behavioural inhibition, by examining whether episodes of these behaviours terminate naturally without external intervention. METHODS: Using a naturalistic observational methodology the stereotyped behaviours of six participants with autism were recorded in real time over periods ranging from 3.59 to 9.20 h. D

Psychopathology and disability in children with unexplained chest pain presenting to the pediatric emergency department.

OBJECTIVE: Chest pain is a common presentation in the pediatric emergency department (PED). In the majority of cases, no clear medical cause is found. Among adults with noncardiac chest pain, psychopathology including panic disorder is common. We assessed the likelihood and type of psychopathology as well as the health status of children and adolescents with unexplained chest pain who presented to the PED. METHODS: We performed a semistructured diagnostic interview of children 8 to 17 years old who presented to an urban, tertiary-care PED with a primary complaint of chest pain for which no me

Perspectives of intellectual disability in South Africa: epidemiology, policy, services for children and adults.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to summarize data published in the scientific literature and available on official websites on the epidemiology, policies and services for children and adults with intellectual disability in South Africa. RECENT FINDINGS: There is a paucity of published literature on intellectual disability in South Africa. The lack of evidence-based publications within the prescribed review period of 12-18 months precludes an accurate description of the prevailing epidemiology and burden of disablement in this country. The few studies yielding epidemiological data were con

Long-term sequelae in children treated for brain tumors: impairments, disability, and handicap.

Sixty-one long-term survivors, treated for brain tumors in childhood, were evaluated in term of neurological impairments, disability, and handicap. Thirty-eight patients (pts) (62%) had at least one impairment. Visual impairment was detected in 14 pts (24%), associated with recurrence (p = .012). Thirty-four patients (56%) had motor impairment, associated with sex (female) in irradiated patients; 13 (21%) had epilepsy, associated with supratentorial tumor site (p = .001). The same number of patients had brain atrophy; risk factors were hydrocephalus at diagnosis and perioperative complications

The relationship between IQ and reading disabilities in English-speaking Canadian and Spanish children.

This study was designed to examine the role of intelligence (IQ) in the definition of reading disabilities (RD) in languages with different orthographic systems. A sample of 94 Spanish children and 157 English-speaking Canadian children with RD was classified into four groups on the basis of IQ scores from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (< 80; 81-90; 91-109; 110-140). We examined the reading and spelling skills of Canadian and Spanish children as a function of Full Scale, Verbal, and Performance IQ scores. Significant differences between the languages were found when read

Fanconi syndrome caused by sodium valproate: report of three severely disabled children.

We report three severely disabled children with epilepsy, a 4-year-old boy, 8-year-old girl and 14-year-old girl, who were treated with sodium valproate from the age of 2 months, 3 months and 7 years, respectively, and who developed Fanconi syndrome. All three patients were bed-ridden and fed by means of a nasogastric or gastrostomy tube. Since Fanconi syndrome was considered to be caused by sodium valproate, it was stopped. After the discontinuation of sodium valproate, renal involvement improved in all patients in 2-12 months. Severely handicapped children may be at risk for sodium valproate

Spatial cognition in children. II. Visuospatial and constructional skills in developmental reading disability.

Cognitive models for developmental dyslexia are nowadays centered on the hypothesis of a specific deficit within the phonologic module of the language system. To ascertain whether defects of spatial cognition are associated with developmental reading disability, we investigated a sample of 43 school children (aged 8-9 years) found to be reading impaired during a wide screening survey for developmental dyslexia in the province of Naples, Italy. After one year all children were tested again and only 9/43 still presented reading impairment, while the remaining had achieved a variable range of spo

Mother-child interaction revisited: communication with non-speaking physically disabled children.

This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the interaction between mothers and their severely physically disabled children who have motor speech disorders. The study was designed to partially replicate previous investigations, most notably those undertaken by Light et al., to examine if the patterns of conversation previously described were observed in interaction involving children of a wide age range. Twenty children who had four-limb cerebral palsy, with no diagnosed learning difficulties or sensory impairments, and who were between 2 and 10 years of age inclusive participated in the resea

Specific learning disability in children with neurofibromatosis type 1: significance of MRI abnormalities.

To determine whether previously reported areas of increased T2 signal intensity on MRI examination in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF 1) are associated with deficits in development and learning common in this population, we evaluated 51 children with NF 1 (aged 8 to 16 years). Forty children completed the full assessment protocol (MRI, medical, psychometric, speech therapy, and occupational therapy assessments). The mean Full Scale IQ scores for the entire study population showed a left shift compared with the normal population, and the distribution of IQ scores was bimodal, suggest

Similarities in the social competencies of learning disabled and low achieving elementary school children.

This study sought to examine distinctions in social competencies between children with learning disabilities (LD) and other children who also experience academic difficulties. Eighty-five children with LD (54 male, 31 female) in Grades 3 through 6 from a large urban school district were compared to a group of low achieving (LA) peers matched on achievement as well as sex, race, and grade. The samples were 42% black, 39% Hispanic, and 19% Anglo. Both groups completed two self-concept questionnaires, a loneliness scale, and a measure of their social relationships outside of school. In addition,

The administration of psychotropic and anticonvulsant drugs to children with profound intellectual disability and multiple impairments.

A national (England and Wales) postal survey of families with a son or daughter with profound intellectual disability and multiple physical and sensory impairments who lived at home was undertaken. A section of the questionnaire dealt with prescription of major tranquillizers, drugs with a sedative function, anticonvulsants and stimulants, while among other variables information was also collected on sex, age, behaviour problems, sleep difficulties and epilepsy. Of children and adults: 5.3 and 7.9%, respectively, were receiving major tranquillizers; 28.5 and 24.5%, respectively, were prescribe

Do children with a specific reading disability have a general serial-ordering deficit?

Two experiments are described in which reading disabled subjects and their normal controls were tested for their ability to abstract sequential regularities from a noisy background. Subjects were presented with an adaptation of the repeated digits task of Hebb (1961) and its spatial analogue the Corsi Blocks (Milner, B. Br. Med. Bull. 27, 272-277, 1971). Normal subjects had a digit span significantly better than their block span and also significantly better than that of the disabled readers. This suggested that normal subjects have better defined "storage filters" for digits or a specific adv

Reading-disabled hyperactive children: a distinct subgroup of attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity?

Mixed hyperactive/reading-disabled children, selected from a large sample of hyperactive children, were compared to pure hyperactive children on demographic, behavioral, and neuropsychological measures. Children in the Mixed group were reading-disabled relative to age and IQ; those in the Pure group had achievement scores that were average relative to age and IQ. The Mixed group was significantly older than the Pure group; there were no differences in gender, race, or socioeconomic status. Behaviorally, the groups did not differ significantly on teacher ratings or on psychiatric ratings of agg

The value of WISC-R profile analysis for the differential diagnosis of learning disabled children.

Examined the research on WISC-R profile analysis germane to the differential diagnosis of learning disabled children in relation to several methodological problems that concern score use and interpretation. The evidence based on Bannatyne's (1974) recategorization of the subtests indicates a Spatial greater than Conceptual greater than Sequencing pattern of performance for learning disabled children. The application of this evidence of group characteristics to the individual child is problematic. The trend is not consistent. In addition, the interpretation of the individual profile is complica

Hierarchical planning disability in the drawings and constructions of a special group of severely aphasic children.

A small group of severely receptive aphasic children who appear to be suffering from a rare aphasic syndrome that has been referred to in the literature as "acquired aphasia with convulsive disorder in children" was tested on drawing and construction tasks which tap hierarchical planning abilities. Although they could draw and construct a complex figure when using a serial method, they could not do so when required to use hierarchical planning in building up the model in terms of its subunits. Their scores reflecting hierarchical ability were significantly lower than those of age-matched profo

Hearing threshold level and middle ear pressure in children with phonetic/phonemic disability.

Middle ear disease and hearing loss of moderate degree is a factor which alone or in combination with others, have been suggested to create phonetic/phonemic disability. The aim of the present investigation was to throw light upon this question. Twentytwo children with phonetic/phonemic disability, 19 boys and 3 girls, age 4.5-6.5 years, were examined. Twentytwo normal speaking children served as a control group. Oto-rhinolaryngological examination, tympanometry and hearing threshold measurements were performed. Abnormal middle ear pressure (less than -50 mm H2O) in one or both ears, and stati

Social perspective-taking and adjustment in emotionally disturbed, learning-disabled, and normal children.

Preadolescent emotionally disturbed, learning-disabled, and normal boys were compared on social perspective-taking and behavioral measures to examine possible contributions of social cognitive deficits to children's adjustment problems. Antisocial-prosocial and withdrawn-gregarious behavior dimensions were studied through subscales derived from teacher ratings. Results indicated that across all groups, high perspective-taking was associated with significantly less withdrawal than was low perspective-taking; within groups, this finding was significant only for the emotionally disturbed boys.
