Ectoparasite associations of bats from central Pennsylvania.

Between April and October 1997, 689 bats representing seven species were captured at Pennsylvania's Canoe Creek State Park. Each bat was sampled for ectoparasitic arthropods, and four species were collected from 13.2% of the host individuals. Ectoparasites include the bat flea Myodopsylla insignis (Rothschild), the wing mite Spinturnix americanus (Banks), the bed bug Cimex adjunctus Barber, and the soft tick Ornithodoros kelleyi Cooley & Kohls. Prevalence, relative density, and mean intensity were calculated for ectoparasites of Myotis lucifugus (Le Conte), which harbored all four ectoparasite

Nipah virus encephalitis outbreak in Malaysia.

Emerging infectious diseases involving zoonosis have become important global health problems. The 1998 outbreak of severe febrile encephalitis among pig farmers in Malaysia caused by a newly emergent paramyxovirus, Nipah virus, is a good example. This disease has the potential to spread to other countries through infected animals and can cause considerable economic loss. The clinical presentation includes segmental myoclonus, areflexia, hypertension, and tachycardia, and histologic evidence includes endothelial damage and vasculitis of the brain and other major organs. Hendra (equine morbillivirus).

Hendra has been recognized in Australia as a new zoonotic disease of horses since 1994/5 and subsequent work has shown that the viral agent is endemic in certain species of fruit bat. The Hendra virus is the type species of a new genus within the sub-family Paramyxovirinae, which also contains another newly identified zoonotic bat virus, namely Nipah. It is assumed that contact with bats has led to the Hendra virus being transferred to horses on each of the three separate incidents that have been reported in the last five years. No evidence has been found for widespread subclinical infection o

Batflies parasitic on some phyllostomid bats in southeastern Brazil: parasitism rates and host-parasite relationships.

Ectoparasitic batflies were studied on 12 species of phyllostomid bats, by making 35 nightly collections of bats using mist nets at the "Panga" Ecological Reservation near Uberlândia, State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, from August 1989 to July 1990. Eleven species of Streblidae and one of Nycteribiidae were collected on 12 species of bats. Prevalence of ectoparasitic flies was lower than those reported by other authors for the New World and may be the result of the lack of caves in the study area, causing bats to roost in less favorable locations, forming smaller colonies. The fly, Tr

In vivo blood oxygen binding in hypoxic lesser spear-nosed bats: relationship to control of breathing.

The hypoxic ventilatory threshold of many mammals correlates with their hemoglobin-oxygen affinity (P50). Yet, in some small mammals ventilation actually declines, rather than increases, with exposure to decreasing PaO2; their air convection requirement (V(E)/V(O2)), however, is elevated in hypoxia. We propose that the threshold of the hypoxic V(E)/V(O2) of small mammals coincides with the inflection ('knee') of their in vivo O2 equilibrium curve (O2EC). In vivo blood gas and pH data were obtained from normoxic and hypoxic lesser-spear nosed bats, Phyllostomus discolor; in vitro blood O2EC wer

Ultrastructure of the binary parotid glands in the free-tailed bat, Tadarida thersites. II. Accessory parotid gland.

BACKGROUND: Many bat species have an extra set of major salivary glands. In some species, the accessory glands are quite similar to the principal one, but in others they may be radically different. Accessory glands usually are associated with the submandibular gland, but the free-tailed bat, Tadarida thersites, also has an accessory parotid gland. In the present study, we compared the accessory parotid gland with its principal counterpart. METHODS: Salivary glands were removed from two specimens of free-tailed bats, one of each sex, that had been live-trapped in western Kenya and immersion-fi

Toxocariasis. A possible cause of the Palm Island mystery disease.

Toxocariasis may have been the cause of the outbreak of a hepatitis-like illness amongst residents of the Palm Island community in 1979. Baby fruit bats on the island were infected with Toxocara pteropodis, and many eggs of this worm were recovered from mangoes. The lifecycle of T. pteropodis is described and compared with that of T. canis. If T. pteropodis was responsible, the infection could be prevented by washing the mangoes before eating them.

Morphology of the gastrointestinal tract in primates: comparisons with other mammals in relation to diet.

Three categories of dietary adaptation are recognized--faunivory, frugivory, and folivory--according to the distinctive structural and biochemical features of animal matter, fruit, and leaves respectively, and the predominance of only one in the diets of most species. Mammals subsisting mainly on animal matter have a simple stomach and colon and a long small intestine, whereas folivorous species have a complex stomach and/or an enlarged caecum and colon; mammals eating mostly fruit have an intermediate morphology, according to the nature of the fruit and their tendency to supplement this diet

Distribution of iron in the gastrointestinal tract of the common vampire bat: evidence for macrophage-linked iron clearance.

Iron in the tissues of the digestive tract of the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) has been studied using histochemical, electron microscopic, and autoradiographic methods. This animal is an obligate sanguivore and has a daily intake of dietary iron 800 times that of man. The amount and distribution of tissue iron is not affected by either a single blood meal or starvation but does reflect the degree of siderosis of each animal's liver and spleen. By 7 days after the injection of a trace amount of 55Fe into the peritoneal cavity, labelled siderotic macrophages are present both on the ser

Sex-Specific Responses to Social Calls Shape Foraging Decisions in a Nectar-Feeding Bat.

Foraging in social animals involves balancing the benefits of social information against the costs of competition. In nectarivorous bats, social vocalizations are commonly produced at feeding sites, yet it remains unclear whether males and females respond differently to such signals. We investigated this by testing how alert calls linked to aggressive interactions and benign social calls influence foraging choices in bats (Glossophaga mutica handleyi). Bats changed their flower choices in response to playbacks, revealing marked sex differences. Males avoided flowers paired with alert calls, wh

Oxford Nanopore Long-Read Sequencing of Bat Guano and Urine for Microbiome Characterization and Pathogen Detection.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing has made possible the study of genetic sequences for taxonomic assignment, mutational analyses, and novel organism discovery. Long-read sequencing methods offer advantages over short-read methods because they can sequence entire DNA molecules without requiring fragmentation. This protocol describes a workflow for microbiome characterization and pathogen detection through the extraction, sequencing, and analysis of DNA from bat environmental samples, including guano and urine, using tailored approaches for each sample type. Pre-processing of guano and urin

Periodic shifts in viral load increase risk of Hendra virus spillover from Pteropus bats.

Prediction and management of zoonotic spillover requires an understanding of infection dynamics within reservoir host populations. Spillover risk is commonly inferred from infection prevalence based on detection of viral genomic material, yet detection alone does not indicate the presence of infectious virus or a sufficient dose for transmission. We undertook a comprehensive investigation of Hendra virus shedding in its primary reservoir, Pteropus bats, analyzing quantitative PCR with reverse transcription (RT-qPCR) data from 6151 pooled urine samples collected across five sites over 3 years.

Strengthening preparedness and response to emerging henipavirus diversity.

Henipaviruses, including the highly pathogenic Nipah virus and Hendra virus, represent a major zoonotic threat with high mortality rates and potential for human-to-human transmission. Recent discoveries of novel henipaviruses in China, Europe and other regions highlight the urgent need for enhanced surveillance in both wildlife reservoirs such as bats, shrews, rodents, and human populations, particularly in high-risk areas. Despite advancements in metagenomic sequencing, gaps in integrated surveillance, fragmented One Health implementation, and insufficient diagnostic infrastructure in large p

Comparative transcriptome analysis unveils unique antiviral immune signatures of Rhinolophus pusillus.

BACKGROUND: Rhinolophus pusillus is currently the only known horseshoe bat that simultaneously harbors SARS-CoV-related coronaviruses (SARSr-CoVs), SARS-CoV-2-related coronaviruses (SC2r-CoVs), and a sarbecovirus recombinant lineage with a mosaic genome combining features of both SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. However, the molecular basis underlying multi-virus coexistence and viral tolerance in this species remains incompletely defined. Here, we focus on basal gene expression patterns to investigate the immune landscape of this species. METHODS: Multi-tissue transcriptomes were generated from six

Reduced gene expression and missense mutations in the transporter protein SLC45A2 in a hypopigmented Egyptian rousette fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus).

Oculocutaneous albinism-characterized by absent or decreased melanin in the skin, eyes and hair-often co-occurs with sensory, skin and immunity disorders. The genetic basis of albinism in humans is complex, with many loci implicated in multiple forms of the disorder. Less is known about the underlying genetic causes of albinism and leucism in other species, and cross-species studies of the molecular correlates of hypopigmentation could highlight common and conserved pathways underlying mammalian pigmentation disorders. We characterize the putative causal loci of reduced pigmentation in an Egyp

A Systematic Review of Historical and Contemporary Rabies Epidemiology and Management in Alabama, USA.

The history of wildlife pathogens in time and space impacts current understanding, detection, and management of infectious diseases, which may best be appreciated dynamically at a local level. As in the rest of the USA, over the past two centuries the epizootiology, prevention, and control of rabies in Alabama has changed significantly. Canine rabies was reported in Alabama during the USA civil war and predominated until after World War II. Appreciation of wildlife rabies grew only after the control of rabies in dogs. During the 1950s, rabies in gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) spread thr

Molecular detection of relapsing fever Borrelia puertoricensis in migratory Mexican free-tailed bats.

UNLABELLED: Bats have been increasingly recognized to host relapsing fever borreliae as well as borreliae that form novel clades adjacent to the Lyme borreliosis group. However, the genetic diversity and zoonotic potential of bat-borne borreliae remain poorly understood, in part because most work to date has focused on bats in the tropics. Fewer bat-borne Borrelia surveys have been conducted in temperate zones, where many bats undertake seasonal migrations that may facilitate pathogen dispersal. We surveyed blood from nearly 400 Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) during their sea
