Despite growing effects of human activities on climate change throughout the world, and global South in particular, scientists are yet to understand how poor healthcare waste management practices in an emergency influences the climate change. This article presents new findings on climate change risks of healthcare waste disposal during and after the 2010 earthquake and cholera disasters in Haiti. The researchers analysed quantities of healthcare waste incinerated by the United Nations Mission in Haiti for 60 months (2009 to 2013). The aim was to determine the relationship between healthcare wa

Stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs) is typically considered to operate in coordination with photosynthesis (A) to balance carbon gain and water loss in an optimal manner. However, at high temperatures that suppress A, gs has been seen to increase or remain high - reducing the predictive accuracy of some stomatal conductance models. We investigated the temperature sensitivity of leaf-level gas exchange and evaluated a temperature-dependent modification of a widely used stomatal conductance model across a temperature gradient (30 to 40°C) in three tropical tree species (Mallotus philippens

Fascioliasis, a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, poses a significant threat to livestock and human health globally. Climate change is altering the transmission dynamics of this disease; however, the direction and magnitude of this change remain uncertain due to a lack of mechanistically grounded predictions at continental scale. In this study, we developed a novel risk index to assess how climate change may affect the potential for fascioliasis transmission across Africa and Europe. The index integrates the following three componen

The climate of northeastern Europe is likely to resemble in many ways Late Pleistocene periglacial conditions in Europe, but there have been relatively few studies exploring the association between climate and morphology in the mid-face of modern northeastern European populations. To fill this gap, we sampled 540 male skulls from 22 European and Near Eastern groups, including 314 skulls from 11 populations from northeastern Europe, to test for possible climate-morphology association at the continental scale. Our results found a moderate and highly significant association (R = 0.48, p = 0.0013,

Mosquito-borne viruses are an increasing health threat to humans, and potentially other vertebrates, in areas where they have not previously existed or from which they had been eradicated. Chikungunya virus emergence exemplifies how multiple factors can act synergistically resulting in rapid, large-scale redistribution and establishment. Despite our increased capacity to collect and analyze large amounts of data, we still lack epidemiological models to facilitate accurate predictions of when and where new diseases may occur. Models focusing on climate changes may have long-term value; however,

The Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction (PTME), the most severe crisis of the Phanerozoic, has been attributed to intense global warming triggered by Siberian Traps volcanism. However, it remains unclear why super-greenhouse conditions persisted for around five million years after the volcanic episode, with one possibility being that the slow recovery of plants limited carbon sequestration. Here we use fossil occurrences and lithological indicators of climate to reconstruct spatio-temporal maps of plant productivity changes through the PTME and employ climate-biogeochemical modelling to investiga

According to national surveillance statistics, over 3 million employees are injured each year; yet, research indicates that these may be substantial underestimates of the true prevalence. The purpose of the current project was to empirically test the hypothesis that organizational safety climate and transactional supervisor safety leadership would predict the extent to which accidents go unreported by employees. Using hierarchical linear modeling and survey data collected from 1,238 employees in 33 organizations, employee-level supervisor safety enforcement behaviors (and to a less consistent

A comprehensive basin wide hydrodynamic evaluation has been carried out to assess the long term impacts of climate change and coastal effluents on the salinity and seawater temperature of the Arabian Gulf (AG) using Delft3D-Flow model. The long term impacts of climate change scenarios A2 and B1 of the IPCC-AR4 on the AG hydrodynamics were evaluated. Using the current capacity and production rates of coastal desalination, power, and refinery plants, two projection scenarios until the year 2080 with 30 year intervals were developed namely the realistic and the optimistic discharge scenarios. Global cholera incidence is increasing, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. We examined the impact of climate and ocean environmental variability on cholera outbreaks, and developed a forecasting model for outbreaks in Zanzibar. Routine cholera surveillance reports between 1997 and 2006 were correlated with remotely and locally sensed environmental data. A seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model determined the impact of climate and environmental variability on cholera. The SARIMA model shows temporal clustering of cholera. A 1°C increase in temperature at 4 months lag

The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of fasciolosis in cattle herds and its influence on production in order to identify potential risk factors in different climate regions and risk indices in three states of Mexico. The levels of anti-F. hepatica IgG1 antibodies were determined using an indirect ELISA. A total of 837 farm owners or managers answered the questionnaire. The total prevalence of the parasite over the period of January to March 2017 was 63.56%. The highest percentages of positive herds for the categories were found in Hidalgo state (88.33%), the no-risk classifi

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly recognised as a threat to population health and healthcare systems, yet the effects of environmental variability on pharmaceutical prescribing remain poorly characterised in the UK. Using a wide array of open-source datasets, we examine the effect of environmental, geographic and socioeconomic factors on prescribing habits in England.
METHODS: We linked monthly, practice-level prescribing data for England (August 2010 - August 2025) to meteorological, air-quality, flooding and demographic datasets using spatial nearest-neighbour matching. Prescribing

The overexploitation of natural resources and increasing dependence on these sources have caused an increase in solid waste generation, aggravating environmental impacts and contributing significantly to climate change through enhanced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This scenario highlights the urgent need for circular economy strategies focused on reducing carbon emissions and mitigating environmental impacts. Continuous monitoring is crucial to evaluate current conditions and guide effective measures in the transition toward a sustainable waste management model. This study quantifies the to

INTRODUCTION: Sub-Saharan Africa, including Siaya County in Kenya, has a high prevalence of chronic HIV infection, which may increase vulnerability to climate-induced heat stress among agricultural workers. Understanding how HIV moderates the relationship between environmental heat exposure and labour capacity is essential for designing targeted, equitable public health interventions in climate-vulnerable settings. This study aims to quantify the effects of heat exposure on labour capacity and sleep, assess whether physiological strain mediates these effects, and examine whether HIV status and

It is well established that light-absorbing organic aerosols (commonly known as brown carbon, BrC) impact climate. However, uncertainties remain as their contributions to absorption at different wavelengths are often ignored in climate models. Further, BrC exhibits differences in absorption at different wavelengths due to the variable composition including varying sources and meteorological conditions. However, diurnal variability in the spectral characteristics of water-soluble BrC (hereafter BrC) is not yet reported. This study presents unique measurement hitherto lacking in the literature. …

Under global climate change intensification, the debate over whether high-altitude saline lakes act as carbon (C) emission sinks or sources remains unresolved. Moreover, there is currently a lack of systematic metabolic and mechanistic C assessments for saline lake ecosystems on the Qingzang Plateau (QZP), especially regarding their associative changes under climate change. Here, we used 18/16O technology and regression models to assess saline lake C metabolism on the QZP between 2000 and 2020. Additionally, we predicted the C metabolism of these lakes between 2030 and 2050 under three future

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic leishmaniosis, caused by Leishmania infantum, is a major public health and veterinary concern in Europe. Traditionally restricted to the Mediterranean basin, the disease is currently undergoing a rapid geographical expansion towards Central and Northern Europe, driven by climate change and the plasticity of its vectors. Current epidemiological surveillance often relies on static annual prevalence maps, which fail to capture the critical intra-annual fluctuations in transmission risk. This study aims to bridge this gap by developing the first high-resolution spatiotemporal

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is an important global crop that supplies protein and oil for the food and feed industries. However, its yield and nutritional quality are increasingly affected by climate change. This study combines experimental data with predictive modeling to assess how elevated CO2 (eCO2), high temperature, and drought (either alone or combined) influence soybean grain production and composition. Plants were grown under controlled conditions simulating future climate scenarios, and biochemical traits, including carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and amino acids, were analyzed.

BACKGROUND: Despite the progress made, malaria continues to impose a major global and regional burden. India contributes to almost half of the malaria cases in South-East Asia. In 2024, an unusual increase in malaria cases was observed in Alipurduar and neighbouring Kokrajhar district in Northeast India; regions that had maintained an API below 1 for several years. Thus, understanding the climatic and environmental factors of this outbreak is critical for early detection and prevention.
METHODS: Monthly epidemiological data on confirmed malaria cases in both districts were analysed from 2018

Global climate change profoundly impacts the geographical distribution patterns and evolutionary dynamics of plants. As a vital ornamental and ecological shrub native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, the wild germplasm resources of Weigela florida are facing dual threats from habitat fragmentation and climate warming. To elucidate the biogeographical mechanisms underlying the species' responses to climate change and to formulate scientific conservation strategies, this study simulated the spatiotemporal dynamics of suitable habitats for W. florida across key historical peri

INTRODUCTION: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are opportunistic pathogens primarily found in soil and water. Previous studies have linked higher population density and tropical/subtropical climates with increased NTM pulmonary disease (NTM-PD). However, the effects of meteorological parameters and population density on NTM incidence in European countries remain unclear. This study aimed to assess whether climate conditions (temperature, humidity, wind speed, precipitation) and urbanisation influence the occurrence of NTM-PD.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study evaluating meteorologic
