A morphological study was carried out on 25 human embryos (3-60 mm CR) and 20 human fetuses (15-40 weeks). The anatomical analysis was completed by immunocytochemical studies of different markers of muscle differentiation (vimentin, desmin, titin and isoforms of the myosin heavy chains). A mesenchymal condensation forms around the urethra after the division of the cloaca (E.H. 12-15 mm CR). A man in his 70s with a complex medical history, including cadaveric renal transplant, presented with recurrent urinary tract infections. Investigation revealed recurrent urinary pathogens, including Enterobacter cloacae and persistent BK viruria. This report describes a case of a delayed diagnosis of a late-onset mesh infection due to an unexpected enteric pathogen, Enterobacter cloacae. The aim of this study was to evaluated the susceptibility of Enterobacteriaceae rods to tigecycline, tetracycline and doxycycline. We analysed 121 strains belonged to species as follows: Escherichia coli (40 strains), Proteus mirabilis (22), Enterobacter cloacae (19), Klebsiellapneumoniae (18), Morganella morgannii (13), Serratia marcescens (4), Klebsiella oxytoca (3) i Proteus vulgaris (2). In 2002, 28 non-duplicate enterobacterial isolates producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) were collected from infected patients at the Bicêtre Hospital in Paris, France. Escherichia coli was the predominant ESBL-positive enterobacterial species, comprising ten (36%) of the isolates. CTX-M enzymes (CTX-M-3, CTX-M-10, CTX-M-14 and CTX-M-15) were produced by 11 (39%) of the isolates (six E. coli, two Enterobacter cloacae, one Enterobacter aerogenes, one Proteus mirabilis and one Citrobacter freundii). Other ESBLs, such as VEB-1 and PER-1, were also detected, but less frequently.

Head-space gas-liquid chromatographic (HS-GLC) detection of acetoin in 223 blood cultures of gram-negative bacilli was compared with results obtained from the conventional identification method. Seventy-three out of 76 cultures of Klebsielleae, including Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxtytoca, Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter agglomerans and Serratia marcescens, were identified by the acetoin detection method with HS-GLC. RATIONALE: Cloacal malformation (CM) is a serious type of anorectal and urogenital tract malformation. However, prenatal ultrasound (US) detection of CM is challenging. In this paper, we reported a rare case of CM prenatally diagnosed by US and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as reviewed the prenatal US and MRI characteristics of CM in the literature.

Natural antibodies (NAbs) are polyreactive, have low avidity, and are a product of B-1 cells. Evidence suggests that NAbs may play a key role in immune defense in turtles, as increased total mucosal antibodies are associated with a decreased number of extracellular intestinal parasites. However, it is unknown if this trend extends to other types of pathogens and if avidity of the NAb to the pathogen is a factor in protection. We examined the relationship between a common intracellular bacteria in turtles-Salmonella-and NAbs. Plasma and mucosal samples were taken from red-eared slider turtles.

A 7-month-old intact female German shepherd dog was presented with recurrent urinary tract infections and incontinence, ambiguous external genitalia (enlarged vulva containing a penis), and an anovestibular fistula. Anatomical structures, histopathology, and karyotyping supported a diagnosis of female pseudo-hermaphrodite, hypothesized to be a result of in utero androgenization with consequential cloacal malformation.

Cloacal anomaly is a rare malformation with an incidence of 1 in 50,000 births. The definitive prenatal diagnosis of cloacal dysgenesis sequence is difficult. The use of three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasonography helps to describe the perineum and change diagnosis. In our case report, a large median genital structure was visualized, which was initially considered a penis-like structure, but the 3-D technique showed an enlarged bud. The urethral meatus was at the tip of this smooth structure. The lack of anal structure was clearly demonstrated.

Cloacal duplication including the rectum, anus, and genitourinary organs is one of supernumerary development. Only two cases have been reported in the literature. A case with cloacal duplication is presented. The patient was an 8-year-old girl who has had fecal incontinence since birth. Successful surgical treatment was achieved by removing one rectum and exteriorizing the other through perineal raphe.

A rare case of descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) secondary to a nontraumatic retropharyngeal abscess is reported. Even in the era of antibiotics, the mortality of DNM is still around 40%.
