OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of the current study was to examine the social maturity of infants and children with cochlear implants in China. A secondary aim was to document the associated information using a General Condition Questionnaire for further cohort study in this population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional observational study and a pilot study. Between July and December 2017, data from all implantees between the ages of 6 months and 14 years who presented to the Hearing and Speech Center of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital for mapping were collected. OBJECTIVES: Normal hearing system is an essential factor for accurate production of speech segments. It seems that cochlear implant prosthesis helps children with hearing impairment to speak more accurately than before receiving prosthesis. The current research aimed to compare the vowel duration in school-aged children with cochlear implants and that in children with normal hearing. Additionally, the performance of girls and boys in two groups were investigated.
METHODS: A cross-sectional and descriptive-analytical study was carried out to compare the vowel duration in 9- to 12-year-old chil

HYPOTHESIS: The risk of electrode migration in cochlear implant (CI) surgery can be reduced by securing the electrode lead in a bone groove … g revision surgery.
RESULTS: Seventeen cases of electrode migration were found in a total of 1,603 cochlear implantations. Only LWE designs were affected by migration. The cumulative incidence for LWE in group B (0.5%) was significantly lower than in group A (3.7%, p < 0.01). The two migration cases in group B revealed insufficient geometric design of the bone grooves …

The severe hearing loss problems that some people suffer can be treated by providing them with a surgically implanted electrical device called cochlear implant (CI). CI users struggle to perceive complex audio signals such as music; however, previous studies show that CI recipients find music more enjoyable when the vocals are enhanced with respect to the background music. In this manuscript source separation (SS) algorithms are used to remix pop songs by applying gain to the lead singing voice. This work uses deep convolutional auto-encoders, a deep recurrent neural network, a multilayer perc

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implantation (CI) is considered an effective and relatively safe procedure for patients with severe-profound hearing loss. However, severe complications are reported in several studies. The purpose of this study was to report the frequency and management of major complications following CI surgery at the National CI Programme (NCIP) in Ireland.
METHODS: Major complications were defined according to the classification of Hansen et al. 2010. The medical records of 1017 patients undergoing CI between 1995 and 2016 were analyzed retrospectively for major complications. In add…

As the only medical device used in the treatment for deafness, the cochlear implant has benefited to more than half a million individuals worldwide. However, the device has limited penetration due to its high cost, especially in low- and middle-income countries. China alone has 27.8 million deaf people, but less than 100,000 of them have received a cochlear implant. The Nurotron Venus device was developed to address the need for an affordable yet safe and effective cochlear implant. The present study describes the design, development, and evaluation of the Nurotron intracochlear electrode arra

Therefore the database of the Cochlear Implant Center of the University Hospital of Heidelberg was investigated.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
METHODS: We present three patients who received a cochlear implant (CI) despite a serious psychiatric disorder. Two were sent from psychiatrists asking if a CI was possible for …

The Cogan syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis and audiovestibular symptoms. Profound sensorineural hearing loss has been reported in approximately half of the patients with the Cogan syndrome resulting in candidacy for cochlear implantation in some patients. The current study is the first histopathologic report on the temporal bones of a patient with the Cogan syndrome who during life underwent bilateral cochlear implantation. Preoperative MRI revealed tissue with high density in the basal turns of both cochleae and both vestibular systems consiste…

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of Ménière's disease (MD) is recommended in case of medical and intratympanic treatment failures. Translabyrinthine vestibular nerve section has been considered the gold standard for denervation procedures in order to control vertigo attacks, although at the cost of sacrificing residual hearing. To the best of our knowledge, no work has been published with regard to a group of patients submitted to translabyrinthine vestibular neurectomy and simultaneous cochlear implant for MD. The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of translabyrinthine ve

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To investigate the impact of hearing aid and cochlear implant use on quality of life in adults.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational cohort study.
METHODS: One hundred thirteen adults aged ≥50 years with postlingual hearing loss receiving routine clinical care at a tertiary academic medical center were evaluated with the Medical Outcome Study Short Form-36 before and 6 and 12 months after intervention with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Change in score was assessed using linear mixed effect models adjusted for age, gender, education, and history of hypertension,

Conclusion In users of a cochlear implant (CI) and a hearing aid (HA) in contralateral ears, frequency-dependent loudness balancing between devices did, on average, not lead to improved speech understanding as compared to broadband balancing. However, nine out of 15 bimodal subjects showed significantly better speech understanding with either one of the fittings. Objectives Sub-optimal fittings and mismatches in loudness are possible explanations for the large individual differences seen in listeners using bimodal stimulation. Methods HA gain was adjusted for soft and loud input sounds in thre

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the topographic relations of cochlea with vital neurovascular structures and their implications for cochlear implantation (CI).
METHODS: Sixty cadaveric human temporal bones were microdissected to expose the basal turn (BT) of cochlea, the carotid canal, the facial canal (FC) and the jugular fossa (JF). The minimum distances of BT of the cochlea from the carotid canal, the FC and roof of the JF were measured.
RESULTS: The mean minimum distances of BT of the cochlea from the carotid canal, the FC and roof of the JF were found to be 1.…

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: It has been our clinical observation that active middle ear disease (MED) temporally corresponds to a transient decrease in cochlear implant (CI) function, specifically at the apical electrodes. This is non-intuitive as CI function is thought to be independent of middle ear aeration and inflammation. The purpose of this case study is to demonstrate how active MED negatively affects both subjective hearing complaints and objective impedance measures in a CI patient.
RESULTS: Subjective hearing decreased and impedances levels increased significantly when the patient was

Dizziness is one of the most common postoperative complications after a cochlear-implant (CI) surgery. With our prospective, matched-paired controlled study, we could demonstrate that patients with distinctive sensorineural hearing loss--even without any complaints of dizziness--already have a reduced horizontal vestibular-ocular-reflex (hVOR). Compared to controls, CI patients presented with a significantly reduced gain. 9 out of 17 CI patients showed physiological results in rotatory testing and video head thrust testing. One patient presented with pathological results in both tests. Remarka

Binaural hearing allows the optimal performance of the auditory system with a better perception of the sounds that make up language and better discrimination in noisy environments. The use of binaural-bimodal stimulation includes a combination of 2 different pacing modes: a cochlear implant in one ear , and acoustic stimulation through a conventional hearing aid in the other. The aim of this study is to determine the hearing gain in patients with cochlear implant alone and hearing aid. Twenty prelingually hearing impaired patients, 11 female and 9 male subjects were recruited with mean age at
