Cognitive screening tests for organic mental disorders in psychiatric inpatients. A hopeless task?

Bedside cognitive screening tests have been suggested as a way to quickly determine the likelihood of a patient's having an organic mental disorder (OMD). The Mini-Mental State (MMS) examination and a number of separate bedside neurobehavioral tests were administered to 206 patients who were consecutively admitted to the University of Iowa Psychiatric Hospital. Both examinations were completed by 150 subjects. Of the sample, 7% had an OMD diagnosis. The most frequent neurological causes of OMD were probable Alzheimer's and closed head trauma. The predictive value positive, predictive value neg

Systematic Review: Convergence and Divergence Between Autism Spectrum Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Genetic, Neuroimaging, and Cognitive Findings.

OBJECTIVE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), albeit distinct diagnoses, overlap in presentation and frequently co-occur. However, the relationship between them remains poorly understood. We reviewed comparative studies of ASD and OCD to identify patterns of convergence and divergence across these diagnoses at cognitive, neurobiological, and genetic levels. METHOD: We searched MEDLINE, Web of Science, and PsycInfo databases. The systematic review was registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42023395895). Studies that compared individuals with ASD and OCD regarding c

A machine learning approach for differentiating bipolar disorder type II and borderline personality disorder using electroencephalography and cognitive abnormalities.

This study addresses the challenge of differentiating between bipolar disorder II (BD II) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), which is complicated by overlapping symptoms. To overcome this, a multimodal machine learning approach was employed, incorporating both electroencephalography (EEG) patterns and cognitive abnormalities for enhanced classification. Data were collected from 45 participants, including 20 with BD II and 25 with BPD. Analysis involved utilizing EEG signals and cognitive tests, specifically the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Integrated Cognitive Assessment. The k-near

Internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy for affective disorders, anxiety disorders and somatic conditions: An updated systematic umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: Internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT), which can involve guidance from a clinician, continues to be a way to deliver psychological treatments. A previous umbrella review identified moderate-to-large effect sizes favouring ICBT compared to control conditions when treating major depression and anxiety disorders. Given the rapid developments in the field, an updated umbrella review of available meta-analyses can show other conditions and subpopulations for which ICBT is effective. The aim of the study was to provide an expanded overview of the efficacy of ICBT for a br

A Disorder-Specific, Cognitively Focused Group Treatment for Childhood Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Development and Case Illustration of the No Worries! Program.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a highly prevalent, chronic, and costly mental disorder in children, and there is a comparative lack of research on specific treatments for GAD, relative to other anxiety disorders. Furthermore, treatment programs for child GAD, unlike those for adults, are almost uniformly transdiagnostic in nature and do not specifically target the cognitive variables (e.g., intolerance of uncertainty, negative beliefs about worry, cognitive avoidance, and negative problem orientation) demonstrated to be correlated with the disorder. However, helping children to understa

One-carbon metabolism in neurodevelopmental disorders: using broad-based nutraceutics to treat cognitive deficits in complex spectrum disorders.

Folate and choline, two nutrients involved in the one-carbon metabolic cycle, are intimately involved in regulating DNA integrity, synthesis, biogenic amine synthesis, and methylation. In this review, we discuss evidence that folate and choline play an important role in normal cognitive development, and that altered levels of these nutrients during periods of high neuronal proliferation and synaptogenesis can result in diminished cognitive function. We also discuss the use of these nutrients as therapeutic agents in a spectrum of developmental disorders in which intellectual disability is a pr

Behavioural phenotypes of the mucopolysaccharide disorders: a systematic literature review of cognitive, motor, social, linguistic and behavioural presentation in the MPS disorders.

BACKGROUND: The mucopolysaccharide disorders (MPS) are a group of recessively inherited metabolic disorders resulting in progressive physical and cognitive decline. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Embase databases were searched, alongside manual screening, to identify relevant literature. Papers were included in the review if they were published in a peer reviewed journal and conducted empirical research into cognitive, motor, social or linguistic development or behaviour in one or more MPS disorders. RESULTS: Twenty-five papers were reviewed. Two papers used methodology of a su

Therapeutic alliance in guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioural treatment of depression, generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Guided internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) has been found to be effective in several controlled trials, but the mechanisms of change are largely unknown. Therapeutic alliance is a factor that has been studied in many psychotherapy trials, but the role of therapeutic alliance in ICBT is less well known. The present study investigated early alliance ratings in three separate samples. Participants from one sample of depressed individuals (N = 49), one sample of individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (N = 35), and one sample with social anxiety disorder (N = 90) completed

Cognitive processes and attitudes in bipolar disorder: a study into personality, dysfunctional attitudes and attention bias in patients with bipolar disorder and their relatives.

BACKGROUND: Research in cognitive processes and attitudes in bipolar disorder is scarce and has provided mixed findings, possibly due to differences in current mood state. It is unclear whether alterations in cognitive processes and attitudes are only related to the depressive mood states of bipolar patients or also represent a vulnerability marker for the development of future (depressive) episodes. This was investigated in the current study. METHODS: Both implicit (attentional bias for emotional words) and explicit (dysfunctional attitudes and personality characteristics) measures of cognit

Auditory steady state response in bipolar disorder: relation to clinical state, cognitive performance, medication status, and substance disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Abnormalities in auditory steady state response (ASSR) at gamma range frequencies have been found in bipolar disorder, but the relationship of these neurophysiological disturbances to clinical factors has not been well characterized. We therefore evaluated the ASSR in bipolar disorder and examined its sensitivity to clinical symptoms, cognitive function, and pharmacological treatment. METHODS: A total of 68 patients with bipolar disorder and 77 control participants were evaluated. Click trains presented at 20, 30, 40, and 50 Hz evoked ASSRs. Mean trial power (MTP) and phase lockin

Cognitive sequences in obsessive-compulsive disorder are supported by frontal cortex ramping activity.

Completing sequences is a routine part of daily life. Many are abstract, defined by a rule governing the order rather than the identity of individual steps (e.g., getting dressed). In obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), excessive ritualistic behaviors suggest a disruption in abstract sequence completion. Executing abstract sequences requires at least two levels in a hierarchy of cognitive control: abstract sequential control (tracking steps) and task switching (shifting between tasks). While task switching has been studied in OCD, little is known in a sequential context. Understanding both hi

Cognitive Abilities and Their Implications for Language and Speech Disorders-Insights From Phoniatric Practice.

Children with language and speech disorders account for approximately 5%-12% of children have language and speech disorders globally. Understanding the cognitive abilities of these children is crucial for identifying how cognitive skills influence speech fluency, language production, and planning effective intervention programs. Subtle differences in cognitive performance have been noted to affect developmental language skills. Therefore, we aimed to compare the cognitive abilities of children with language impairments and stuttering to typically developing controls. Our study was conducted on
