Developing a Strengths-Based, Culturally Grounded Intervention for Black Women Living With HIV and Intimate Partner Violence: A Formative Study of 1MoreStep.

Black women in the United States face intersecting challenges of HIV and intimate partner violence. Few programs integrate safety planning with HIV care engagement while addressing strengths and contextual factors that sustain resilience. We developed 1MoreStep, a strengths-based intervention grounded in a cognitive behavioral approach and an HIV stigma framework. Formative work included 12 in-depth interviews, seven focus groups, and a six-member Community Advisory Board. Findings revealed multilevel barriers, including internalized and anticipated stigma, isolation, and structural service ga

Disruption of hippocampal-prefrontal neural dynamics and risky decision-making in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

This study investigates how amyloid pathology influences hippocampal-prefrontal neural dynamics and decision-making in Alzheimer's disease (AD) using 5XFAD mice, a well-established model system characterized by pronounced early amyloid pathology. Utilizing ecologically relevant "approach food-avoid predator" foraging tasks, we show that 5XFAD mice exhibit persistent risk-taking behaviors and reduced adaptability to changing threat conditions, indicative of impaired decision-making. Multi-regional neural recordings reveal rigid hippocampal CA1 place cell fields, decreased sharp-wave ripple (SWR

The cognitive adaptability and resiliency employment screener (CARES): tool development and testing.

INTRODUCTION: To decrease psychological risk for content moderators, the study initiated the first steps of developing a robust employment screening tool, namely, the Cognitive Adaptability and Resiliency Employment Screener. METHOD: The study consisted of three phases with 4,839 total participants. RESULTS: In Phase 1, a set of 76 items were developed and tested via exploratory factor analysis, yielding three factors (i.e., Psychological Perseverance & Agility, Rumination & Emotional Lingering, and Expressiveness & Sociability) and also reducing the scale to 68 items. In Phase 2 through con

Pre-Navigation via Interactive Audio Tactile Maps to Promote the Wellbeing of Visually Impaired People.

BACKGROUND: Pre-navigational tools can assist visually impaired people when navigating unfamiliar environments. Assistive technology products (eg tactile maps or auditory simulations) can stimulate cognitive mapping processes to provide navigational assistance in these people. OBJECTIVES: We compared how well blind and visually impaired people could learn a map presented via a tablet computer auditory tactile map (ATM) in contrast to a conventional tactile map accompanied by a text description objectives. METHODS: Performance was assessed with a multiple choice test that quizzed participants

Sleep Deprivation Triggers Cognitive Control Impairments in Task-Goal Switching.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the impact of sleep deprivation (SD) on task-goal switching, a key component of cognitive flexibility. METHODS: Task-goal switching performance was tested after one night of regular sleep (n = 17 participants) or of total SD (n = 18). To understand the relationships between task-switching performance and other cognitive processes following SD, participants were tested for other key attentional (alertness and vigilance) and executive (inhibition and working memory) functions. Spontaneous eye blink rate (EBR) was also measured as an indirect marker of s…

Suicidality in non-treatment seeking young adults with subsyndromal gambling disorder.

Gambling Disorder is associated with elevated rates of suicidal thoughts and acts. However, virtually nothing is known about suicidality in … y disorders, greater rates of nicotine consumption, and relative impairments in decision-making and cognitive flexibility. These findings suggest that decision-making impairments may be implicated in the development of both gambling problems and suicidality. Future work should address causality, neural correlates, and tailored suicide prevention strategies for people w …

Differential relationships between personal and community stressors and children's neurocognitive functioning.

Early adversity can alter development of neurocognition, including executive cognitive and emotional regulatory functions. This is the first study to explore differential relationships between personal (physical and emotional abuse and neglect, school and parental stressors) and community (neighborhood problems and witnessing neighborhood violence) stressors and neurocognition. Predominantly Latino children (n = 553) aged 10 to 12 years completed tasks measuring intelligence, impulsivity, problem solving, cognitive flexibility, decision making, and emotion attributions. Adjusting for age and p…

Sex and the clock: Exploring sex differences in chronotype and circadian behavior among healthy older adults.

This study aimed to compare subjective and objective circadian measures with a focus on sex differences and cognition in healthy older adults. A total of 126 participants (aged 65-90 years) completed the Horne & Ostberg Morning-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and the Circadian Type Inventory (CTI) to assess their morning-evening preference and four circadian traits: rigidity vs flexibility (CTI-FR) and languidity vs vigor (CTI-LV). These self-report measures were compared to actigraphy data from a sub-cohort of 63 individuals who wore wrist actigraphs for 24 hours a day over a 7-day period. Re

The effects and possible mechanisms of whole-body vibration on cognitive function: A narrative review.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a physical stimulation method that transmits mechanical oscillations to the entire body through a vibration platform or device. Biokinetic and epidemiologic studies have shown that prolonged exposure to high-intensity WBV increases health risks, primarily to the lumbar spine and the nervous system connected to it. There is currently insufficient evidence to demonstrate a quantitative relationship between vibration exposure and risk of health effects. The positive effects of WBV on increasing muscle strength and improving balance and flexibility are well known, but

Cognitive performance as a behavioral phenotype associated with cocaine self-administration in female and male socially housed monkeys.

Considerable research has suggested that certain cognitive domains may contribute to cocaine misuse. However, there are gaps in the literature regarding whether cognitive performance before drug exposure predicts susceptibility to cocaine self-administration and how cognitive performance relates to future cocaine intake. Thus, the present study aimed to examine cognitive performance, as measured using automated CANTAB cognitive battery, prior to and following acquisition of cocaine self-administration under a concurrent drug vs. food choice procedure in female and male socially housed cynomolg

Divergent Thinking in Early Childhood: Dimensions That Support Pre-Literacy Skills.

Divergent thinking is a key educational skill associated with cognitive and pre-literacy abilities. However, the limited research conducted with preschool populations makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions and to inform curriculum changes at early ages. This study aimed to (1) examine sex and school grade differences in divergent thinking at this stage, and (2) analyze the explanatory power of creative variables for preliteracy skills in second-cycle preschool students. A total of 80 children aged 3 to 5 years (M = 4.44; SD = 0.57) participated in this study. They completed an ad hoc figu
