Current research on personality disorders strives to identify key behavioural and cognitive facets of patient functioning, to unravel the underlying root causes and maintenance mechanisms. This process often involves the application of social paradigms - however, these often only include momentary affective depictions rather than unfolding interactions. This constitutes a limitation in our capacity to probe core symptoms, and leaves potential findings uncovered which could help those who are in close relationships with affected individuals. Here, we deployed a novel task in which subjects inte

BACKGROUND: Social Support has been found to contribute to lower mental illness burden, higher treatment adherence, enhanced social functioning, and better quality of life. Individuals with schizophrenia report lower social support compared to non-clinical populations, yet the factors contributing to this discrepancy are not fully clear. Specifically, the person-related variables that may enhance or hinder SS in people with schizophrenia are unknown. Evidence from affective neuroscience research has implicated emotion awareness and regulation as key predictors of social functioning, a correlat

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) pulse amplitude, which dictates the induced electric field (E-field) magnitude in the brain, is presently fixed at 800 or 900 milliamperes (mA) without clinical or scientific rationale. We have previously demonstrated that increased E-field strength improves ECT's antidepressant effect but worsens cognitive outcomes. Amplitude-determined seizure titration may reduce the E-field variability relative to fixed amplitude ECT. In this investigation, we assessed the relationships among amplitude-determined seizure-threshold (STa), E-field magnitude, and clinical outco

Understanding the neurobiology of semantic knowledge is a major goal of cognitive neuroscience. Taxonomic and thematic semantic knowledge are represented differently within the brain's conceptual networks, but the specific neural mechanisms remain unclear. Some neurobiological models propose that the anterior temporal lobe is an important hub for taxonomic knowledge, whereas the TPJ is especially involved in the representation of thematic knowledge. However, recent studies have provided divergent evidence. In this context, we investigated the neural correlates of taxonomic and thematic confron…

Worry is a repetitive, negative thought process that is widely experienced as difficult to control. Despite the adverse effects of uncontrollable worry on academic and other role functioning, the mechanisms by which worry becomes uncontrollable remain poorly understood. Previous experimental work has historically emphasized valence (negative versus positive or neutral). However, contemporary cognitive neuroscience also distinguishes between internally-directed attention (e.g., to thoughts) and externally-directed attention (e.g., to perceptual stimuli). To date, no studies have experimentally …

Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) is a typical member of the PTP family, considered a direct negative regulator of several receptor and receptor-associated tyrosine kinases. This widely localized enzyme has been involved in the pathophysiology of several diseases. More recently, PTP1B has attracted attention in the field of neuroscience, since its activation in brain cells can lead to schizophrenia-like behaviour deficits, anxiety-like effects, neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation and depression. Conversely, PTP1B inhibition has been shown to prevent microglial activation, thus exerting

Dynamics within and between functional resting-state networks have a crucial role in determining both healthy and pathological brain functioning in humans. The possibility to noninvasively interact and selectively modulate the activity of networks would open to relevant applications in neuroscience. Here we tested a novel approach for multichannel, network-targeted transcranial direct current stimulation (net-tDCS), optimized to increase excitability of the sensorimotor network (SMN) while inducing cathodal inhibitory modulation over prefrontal and parietal brain regions negatively correlated

BACKGROUND: Affective neuroscience and scar theories propose that increased excessive worry, the hallmark symptom of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), predicts future declines in executive functioning (EF). However, the preponderance of cross-sectional designs used to examine between-person chronic worry-EF relationships has blocked progress on understanding their potentially causal within-person associations. Accordingly, this study used bivariate dual latent change score (LCS) models to test whether within-person increased GAD severity might relate to future reduced EF.
METHODS: Community

This review summarizes the last decade of work by the ENIGMA (Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Consortium, a global alliance of over 1400 scientists across 43 countries, studying the human brain in health and disease. Building on large-scale genetic studies that discovered the first robustly replicated genetic loci associated with brain metrics, ENIGMA has diversified into over 50 working groups (WGs), pooling worldwide data and expertise to answer fundamental questions in neuroscience, psychiatry, neurology, and genetics. Most ENIGMA WGs focus on specific psychiatric and

One of the most robust and oft-replicated findings in cognitive neuroscience is that several spatially distinct, functionally dissociable ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) regions respond preferentially to different categories of concrete entities. However, the determinants of this category-related organization remain to be fully determined. One recent proposal is that privileged connectivity of these VOTC regions with other regions that store and/or process category-relevant properties may be a major contributing factor. To test this hypothesis, we used a multicategory functional magneti…

Cognitive and neuroscience studies indicate that attentional operations are impaired in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our goal was to define the anatomical areas of activation associated with visual attention processing and to define deficits or changes that may occur in AD patients compared with control group. Thirteen AD patients and 13 age- and education-matched normal controls were tested in two visual search tasks (one was a conjunction task, where feature binding is required. The other was a subset task, where group stimuli is needed without feature binding) using fMRI techniques. After ster

INTRODUCTION: Social exclusion in educational settings is a salient interpersonal stressor during adolescence. However, ostracism, peer rejection, peer victimization, bullying, loneliness, and social isolation are overlapping but non-equivalent constructs. This narrative review examines how social exclusion in educational settings may contribute to the risk of alienation in adolescent development from a mind-body interaction perspective.
METHODS: A structured, non-exhaustive literature search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, and the Web of Science Core Collection for peer-reviewed English-l

BACKGROUND: Psychological adaptability hinges on the dynamic balance between cognitive regulation (self-control) and emotional reactivity (impulsivity, reward/punishment sensitivity). However, traditional variable-centered approaches often fail to capture how these traits holistically co-occur, and the neural architectures predicting their longitudinal transitions in early adulthood remain under-explored.
METHODS: This longitudinal study (N = 1,229 baseline; N = 432 2-year follow-up) integrated a person-centered behavioral approach with resting-state fMRI. We employed Latent Profile Analysis

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic ocular pain (COP) is a debilitating condition in which patients experience pain in or around the eyes. It is strongly associated with other pain and psychological conditions. Management options remain limited and available ocular therapies are rarely effective, particularly in patients with central sensitization. As in other pain conditions, psychological and behavioral interventions are important, yet understudied and underutilized in the management of COP. This review explores the literature pertaining to such interventions for COP.
RECENT FINDINGS: COP, while pre

Chronic pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide and remains a challenge for healthcare systems, medical education, and public health. Although advances in pain neuroscience and interventional therapies have improved pain management, biomedical approaches alone are insufficient to address the multidimensional nature of persistent pain or promote adaptive recovery, participation, and long-term functioning. Contemporary pain medicine therefore requires educational models integrating health promotion, resilience, relationship-centered care, and sustainable professional practice. To develop
