Perceptual similarity mostly ignores within-category feature distributions: Evidence from computational modeling of human categorizations.

Categorization is a fundamental human skill that involves assigning objects to categories based on their features. Within each category, object features can vary and correlate, giving rise to within-category feature distributions. Processing such distributional information can, in principle, improve category learning. However, the extent to which people actually make use of within-category feature distributions during categorization remains unclear due to mixed empirical evidence. To investigate this question, we conducted two category learning and transfer experiments in which the variances a

Modular serial-parallel network for hierarchical facial representations.

Some evidence suggests that faces are perceived holistically, but subjective experience and research on the neural organization of the visual system indicate that facial parts can also be analyzed individually. Thus, advances in theories of face perception are met with two major challenges: How can hierarchical face representations be used to integrate holistic and analytic encoding within the same framework? And how can the stages of face processing be integrated with higher level cognitive processes, such as memory and decision making? We propose a novel computational framework termed the "M

How I Teach ICU Triage: A Three-Column Framework for Premorbid, Morbid, and Postmorbid Assessment.

Intensive care unit (ICU) triage is a cognitively complex and emotionally charged task that challenges clinicians across training levels. Although trainees may recognise prognostic factors and ethical principles, many lack a coherent structure to integrate these elements into a defensible real-time assessment. We describe a three-domain triage framework - Premorbid, Morbid, and Postmorbid - designed to support structured reasoning during ICU triage, particularly for on-call senior residents and clinicians who do not practice critical care routinely. The framework is taught through case-based d

Object perception encodes mutually exclusive possibilities.

Human adults represent and reason about possibilities: multiple, mutually exclusive, nonactual ways the world could be. It is debated whether this is a late-developing, human-specific capacity and whether it requires natural language. We propose that instead of a unitary high-level capacity, multiple cognitive capacities might independently represent possibilities in different ways and with different properties. Our case study is object perception, a capacity shared with infants and nonhuman animals. Using methods that tap specifically into visual processes, across four experiments (N = 160),

Toward quantitative cognitive-behavioral modeling of psychopathology: An active inference account of social anxiety disorder.

Understanding psychopathological mechanisms is a central goal in clinical science. While existing theories have demonstrated high research and clinical utility, they have provided limited quantitative explanations of mechanisms. Previous computational modeling studies have primarily focused on isolated factors, posing challenges for advancing clinical theories holistically. To address this gap and leverage the strengths of clinical theories and computational modeling in a synergetic manner, it is crucial to develop quantitative models that integrate major factors proposed by comprehensive theo

Assessing memory for emotions separately from emotion recognition after traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI) often show deficits in recognition of facial emotion, but their ability to remember emotions is poorly understood. Furthermore, there are no practicable tasks that measure this ability. This study examined the construct of memory for emotions using a novel Facial Recognition and Memory for Emotion (FRAME) test. METHOD: Participants were 53 adults with complicated mild-to-severe TBI and a comparison group of 64 neurologically healthy adults. The FRAME and a neuropsychological battery were administered to participants. Analyses included zero-o

Polycystic ovary syndrome in 2025-insights and innovations.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, with broad implications for reproductive, metabolic, cardiovascular, and psychological health. Antimüllerian hormone level has emerged as a unique biomarker reflecting both ovarian reserve and possibly playing a significant role as a neuroactive hormone in the pathogenesis of PCOS. Beyond reproductive concerns, PCOS confers an elevated lifetime risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. With increasing evidence for the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke even in the reproduc

Active bystandership by youth in the digital era: Microintervention strategies for responding to social media-based microaggressions and cyberbullying.

Microaggressions are intentional or unintentional slights, insults, invalidations, and offensive behaviors that communicate hostile or derogatory messages to minoritized populations. When microaggressions cross over to social media, they can be considered a form of cyberbullying, which occurs over digital devices and harms, threatens, undermines, or socially excludes others. Microaggressions and cyberbullying have adverse mental health outcomes for racial and cultural minority youth, and there is an urgent need for practical strategies youth can use online to interrupt and disarm negative and

Making rights from wrongs: The crucial role of beliefs and justifications for the expression of aversive personality.

Whereas research focusing on stable dispositions has long attributed ethically and socially aversive behavior to an array of aversive (or "dark") traits, other approaches from social-cognitive psychology and behavioral economics have emphasized the crucial role of social norms and situational justifications that allow individuals to uphold a positive self-image despite their harmful actions. We bridge these research traditions by focusing on the common core of aversive traits (the dark factor of personality [D]) and its defining aspect of involving diverse beliefs that serve to construct justi

Integrated intervention for comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder and fibromyalgia: A pilot study of women veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) are two commonly co-occurring conditions among women veterans. Each contributes to functional impairment that is compounded in those with both diagnoses. This emphasizes the need for integrated evidence-based treatments aimed at reducing symptoms of both. This pilot study examined feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of an integrated treatment combining elements of cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain and cognitive processing therapy in a small sample of women veterans with PTSD and FMS. METHOD: Part

Cognitive and neural facets of dissociation in a traumatized population.

Dissociative phenomena are frequently experienced by psychologically traumatized people. However, little is known about the cognitive profiles of highly dissociative traumatized individuals, and corresponding patterns of neural connectivity when attentional networks are engaged in the context of emotion. One hundred seventeen traumatized women completed the multiscale dissociation inventory (MDI) and neuropsychological testing; MDI scores were used to classify high- and low-dissociative participants. Forty-six participants also underwent fMRI during performance of an attentional control task t

Effectiveness of evidence-based psychotherapy for posttraumatic distress within a jail diversion program.

Adults with severe mental illness (SMI) who come into contact with the criminal justice system experience high rates of trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For individuals with SMI, symptoms of PTSD are associated with exacerbated psychiatric symptoms, higher risk of homelessness and-for those with a history of arrest-increased risk of recidivism. The goal of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) for trauma-related distress in treating individuals with SMI who have been diverted from jail to receive community-based trea

The route of administration exacerbates prefrontal functional impairments in crack cocaine users.

Studies have evidenced more severe health consequences in individuals who smoked crack cocaine as compared to intranasal cocaine users. Differential neurocognitive deficits between the crack and intranasal cocaine-addicted patients, associated with prefrontal cortex functions, have never been tested using complex cognitive tasks in humans. In this study, we examined possible distinct neurocognitive deficits in 43 crack-addicted patients (CrD) compared with 36 intranasal cocaine-addicted patients (CD) and 32 controls. CrD and CD were evaluated after 2 weeks of supervised detoxification in two i

Evaluation of iron levels and hematological indices among blood donors at the Southern Zonal Blood Center, Accra, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Blood donation is essential for maintaining life-saving supplies, but screening often focuses only on hemoglobin, neglecting iron stores. While hemoglobin recovers quickly, iron takes longer to replenish, putting frequent donors at risk. Even without anemia, low iron can cause fatigue, reduced endurance, and cognitive issues, potentially leading to iron-deficiency anemia. Many programs overlook iron status, leaving regular donors vulnerable to chronic depletion. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to assess the iron status and haematological indices of categories of blood do

Biologics in Older Adults with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Narrative Review.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) disproportionately affects older adults. While targeted biologic therapies have shown efficacy in type 2 eosinophilic endotypes, elderly patients remain underrepresented in pivotal clinical trials. This narrative review examines the pathophysiological rationale, efficacy data, and unique geriatric challenges of biologic therapies in older adults. Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Scopus for phase II and III randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies evaluating biologic agents (anti-IL-5, anti-IL-

Rethinking prognosis in multiple sclerosis: a multiaxial perspective.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition marked by considerable prognostic uncertainty, despite advances in therapeutic strategies and biomarker development. Current approaches to prognosis are largely focused on disease burden, failing to consider the influence of compensatory mechanisms, which complicate the evaluation of long-term outcomes. No unified framework currently exists to guide the integration of diverse prognostic factors, ranging from lesion burden and location to neuroaxonal injury, structural and cognitive reserve, lifestyle and digital biomarkers. To address this gap, a consorti…

Basal Ganglia Calcifications for Nephrologists: Fahr/Primary Familial Brain Calcification (PFBC) at the Interface of Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) and Hypoparathyroidism.

Bilateral basal ganglia calcifications are increasingly recognized on neuroimaging, yet their interface with chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) and hypoparathyroidism is rarely addressed from a nephrology perspective. In this narrative review, we synthesized data on primary familial brain calcification (PFBC) and secondary Fahr syndromes, highlight proposed mechanisms linking disturbances in calcium-phosphate-parathyroid hormone (PTH) homeostasis to intracranial parenchymal calcification, and summarize the clinical spectrum from incidental findings to disabling movement

Acute bilateral multiple subcortical infarcts as manifestation in cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is characterised by recurrent subcortical ischemic events, migraine with aura, dementia and mood disturbance. Strokes are typically lacunar infarcts; however, bilateral multiple subcortical lacunar infarcts have been described only sporadically. METHOD: We described four CADASIL patients who presented with acute bilateral multiple subcortical infarcts as the first manifestation. We also briefly summarised the case reports detailing the bilateral multiple infarcts in CADASIL. RESUL

Immunoneuropsychiatry - novel perspectives on brain disorders.

Immune processes have a vital role in CNS homeostasis, resilience and brain reserve. Our cognitive and social abilities rely on a highly sensitive and fine-tuned equilibrium of immune responses that involve both innate and adaptive immunity. Autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, infection and psychosocial stress can tip the scales towards disruption of higher-order networks. However, not only classical neuroinflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and autoimmune encephalitis, are caused by immune dysregulation that affects CNS function. Recent insight indicates that similar processes ar

Childhood Lead Exposure and Adult Neurodegenerative Disease.

Millions of Americans now entering midlife and old age were exposed to high levels of lead, a neurotoxin, as children. Evidence from animal-model and human observational studies suggest that childhood lead exposure may raise the risk of adult neurodegenerative disease, particularly dementia, through a variety of possible mechanisms including epigenetic modification, delayed cardiovascular and kidney disease, direct degenerative CNS injury from lead remobilized from bone, and lowered neural and cognitive reserve. Within the next ten years, the generation of children with the highest historical …
