BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) technology has been recently introduced in a variety of clinical settings, such as physical, occupational, cognitive, and psychological rehabilitation or training. However, the clinical efficacy of VR rehabilitation compared with traditional training techniques remains to be elucidated.
CASE: A 90-year-old man underwent VR-guided, dual-task, body trunk balance training in the sitting position using a newly developed medical device (mediVR KAGURA, mediVR, Inc., Toyonaka, Japan) after his physical activity level had plateaued. The patient had difficulty in walki

Cognitive regulatory control processes play an essential but typically unappreciated role in maintaining mental health. The purpose of the current paper is to identify this role and demonstrate how cognitive-behavioral and related techniques can compensate for impairments. Impaired cognitive regulation contributes to the overly intense emotional states present in anxiety disorders, depression, and personality disorders; progression of adaptive hypomania to mania; expression of psychosis in the conscious and awake state; dominance of immature defense mechanisms in borderline and other personali

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) affects a large proportion of cancer survivors and adversely affects quality of life (QoL). While there is no established CRCI treatment, a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), Memory and Attention Adaptation Training (MAAT), has evidence of efficacy in improving self-reported and objective neurocognitive outcomes. However, not all people with CRCI require a full course of MAAT (8 visits).
AIMS: We condensed MAAT into an educational class (4 1-h meetings) as a "stepped care" approach to address CRCI in a busy clinical oncology care setting

BACKGROUND: Both the self inflating bag and the T-piece resuscitator are recommended for neonatal resuscitation, but many health care workers are unfamiliar with using the latter. A prospective, comparative, observational study was done to determine the ease and effectiveness of training of health care personnel in the two devices using infant training manikins.
METHODS: 100 health care workers, who had no prior formal training in neonatal resuscitation, were divided into small groups and trained in the use of the two devices by qualified trainers. Assessment of cognitive skills was done by p

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to promote cognitive health and emotional well-being in older adults by implementing a culturally adapted Five-Domain Lifestyle Intervention (FDLI) in Taiwan. Building upon the internationally recognised Finnish FINGER model, the FDLI included core components-nutritional guidance, physical activity, cognitive training and cardiometabolic risk management-while integrating nostalgic music as a culturally meaningful fifth domain to enhance emotional engagement.
METHODS: An 8-month quasi-experimental intervention study was conducted among 38 community-dwelling older ad…

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments, a prevalent quality-of-life concern in breast cancer (BC), are particularly pronounced in women having undergone adjuvant chemotherapy. These impairments-affecting executive function, attention, and processing speed-are often underdiagnosed, with no established treatments. Exercise is a potential intervention to mitigate cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI). Since virtual care delivery is feasible, remotely delivered exercise interventions for CRCI management in patients with BC may be explored.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the feasibility of an 8-week remot

BACKGROUND: Physical and psychological stress alter gut-brain axis activity, potentially causing intestinal barrier dysfunction that may, in turn, induce cognitive and mood impairments through exacerbated inflammation and blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability. These interactions are commonly studied in animals or artificial laboratory environments. However, military survival training provides an alternative and unique human model for studying the impacts of severe physical and psychological stress on the gut-brain axis in a realistic environment.
PURPOSE: To determine changes in intestinal b

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is common in older adults and is linked to dementia, functional decline, and poorer quality of life. Exercise is recommended as a non-pharmacological strategy, but comparative effects of exercise modalities, alone or combined with cognitive training, remain uncertain. This systematic review and network meta-analysis compared exercise-based interventions for cognitive and psychological outcomes in older adults with MCI.
METHODS: Following a registered PROSPERO protocol (CRD420261372312), we searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Scienc…

Cognitive impairment and related abnormal brain activity are common in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Adaptive training based on working memory (WM) has been shown to ameliorate cognitive symptoms, although the effects at a neural level are unclear. The aim of this study was to expand the existing research on the effects of an adaptive WM rehabilitative intervention on brain functional activity in PwMS. A sample of eighteen PwMS performed an 8-week home-based cognitive rehabilitation treatment based on adaptive WM training. PwMS were assessed before and after treatment using a validate

In this multicentre randomised controlled trial (RCT), 43 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) were randomly allocated to either the experimental condition receiving cognitive rehabilitation including strategy training (ReSET; Strategic Executive Treatment, n = 24) or to the control condition receiving computerised repetitive practice training for attention (Cogniplus, n = 16). We expected that strategy training (ReSET) would be more effective than cognitive training (Cogniplus) in improving patients' everyday life executive functioning. Neuropsychological assessment was administered at base…

Cognitive remediation is a treatment approach with the potential to translate basic science into more specific, mechanism-based interventions by targeting particular cognitive skills. The present study translated understanding of two well-defined cognitive-emotion dysfunctions into novel deficit-matched interventions and evaluated whether cognitive remediation would demonstrate specific and generalizable change. Two antisocial-subtypes, individuals with psychopathy and externalizing traits, are characterized by cognitive-affective problems that predispose them to engage in significant substanc
