MAFF statutory incident reports in surveillance, prevention, and control of human Salmonella typhimurium infection.

We surveyed consultants in communicable disease control (CCDCs) for their views on the current and potential value of Statutory Incident Reports--Salmonella in Animals, Birds and their Products received from the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF), in the surveillance, prevention, and control of Salmonella typhimurium infections in humans. CCDCs from 103 (83%) of 124 district health authorities responded. Most CCDCs in rural areas used the reports either to cross reference information about animal and human isolates or to discuss with environmental health officers. Many believed …

Effectiveness of insecticide-impregnated collars for the control of canine visceral leishmaniasis.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease widely distributed worldwide. In Brazil, the control measures adopted in the last decades have not been able to prevent the spread of the disease. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a population-based intervention using 4% deltamethrin-impregnated dog collars on the incidence of canine visceral leishmaniasis. A community intervention study was carried out in two areas of the city of Montes Claros, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In the control area, the preventive measures recommended by the Brazilian Program for Surveillance

Preparing Frontline Hospitals for Dangerous Special Pathogens Beyond Ebola.

Frontline hospitals are at the forefront of all travel-related, emerging and reemerging infectious diseases and special pathogens. Yet, the readiness of frontline hospitals and their ability to identify, isolate, and inform on Ebola and other special pathogens is uncertain. This article addresses the resources necessary to support screening for Ebola and other special pathogens and presents the decision-making algorithm for the transport of patients with high-consequence infectious diseases within the New York City Health + Hospitals integrated healthcare delivery network, which includes 10 fr

From one to the other: responding to Ebola cases on either side of the line.

This case study is adapted from events that occurred along the Sierra Leone and Guinea land border during the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa. The response activities involved Sierra Leone and Guinea officials, along with assistance from U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). This case study builds upon an understanding of basic surveillance systems and outbreak response activities. Through this exercise, students will understand how to incorporate communication and coordination into surveillance and response efforts with counterp

Sporadic acute hepatitis E in the united kingdom: an underdiagnosed phenomenon?

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E (HEV) is the primary cause of enterically transmitted non-A non-B hepatitis worldwide. Case reports of HEV in individuals in the United Kingdom relate to travel to endemic areas or contact with individuals who have visited these areas. CASE REPORTS: Four individuals presented with acute hepatitis to a hepatology clinic in a teaching hospital. Serology confirmed acute hepatitis E in all four. Investigation by the Communicable Disease Control Department established no links between the cases, no travel to an endemic area, and no contacts. CONCLUSION: Contrary to current…

SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Other Communicable Diseases Identified Among Evacuees From Afghanistan Arriving in Virginia and Pennsylvania, August to September 2021.

In 2021, the US government undertook Operation Allies Welcome, in which evacuees from Afghanistan arrived at 2 US ports of entry in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Because of the rapid evacuation process, the US government granted evacuees an exemption to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requirement in place at that time-namely, that air passengers present a negative SARS-CoV-2 viral test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before they boarded international flights bound for the United States. This study describes cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection detected among 65 068 e

The epidemiological features of heart failure in developing countries: a review of the literature.

Cardiovascular diseases are increasingly recognised as an important cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. This is due to the ageing of the population and better control of communicable disease and malnutrition. We review the published data on the epidemiology of heart failure in such countries. Rheumatic heart disease remains a major cause of heart failure in Africa and Asia, especially in the young. Hypertension is an important cause of heart failure especially in the African and African-American population. Chagas' disease is still a cause of heart failure in South Americ

[Modern bacterial vaccines].

A well founded vaccination strategy is of crucial importance for controlling communicable diseases. The WHO Enlarged Vaccination Programme of 1976 provides to protect by vaccination all children in the world against six infection diseases - diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, measles, poliomyelitis, and tuberculosis, a sure immunization prophylaxis being possible against them. The perspectives of further development of some classical vaccines as against cholera, typhoid fever, and pertussis are reviewed. Some recent bacterial vaccines are discussed being of special significance for controlling nos

The impact of immunization programs on 10 vaccine preventable diseases in Italy: 1900-2015.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination has determined a dramatic decline in morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases over the last century. However, low perceived risk of the infectious threat and increased concern about vaccines' safety led to a reduction in vaccine coverage, with increased risk of disease outbreaks. METHODS: Annual surveillance data of nationally communicable infectious diseases in Italy between 1900 and 2015 were used to derive trends in morbidity and mortality rates before and after vaccine introduction, focusing particularly on the effect of vaccination programs. Autoregressive

Prevalence of carriers of Neisseria meningitidis among migrants: is migration changing the pattern of circulating meningococci?

To evaluate the prevalence of carriers of Neisseria meningitidis and circulating serogroups, 253 African refugee residents in the Asylum Seeker Center of Bari, Italy, were enrolled. Thirteen subjects (5.1%) were identified as carriers of meningococci. Six (46.1%) strains were autoagglutinable, four (30.8%) belonged to serogroup W135, and three (23.1%) to serogroup Y.

Infection control basis for recommending one-time use of sterile syringes and aseptic procedures for injection drug users.

Persons who inject drugs are at increased risk for many infectious diseases, including HIV. Reuse of syringes and needles and other equipment used to prepare and inject drugs increases the risk of infection with blood-borne and other pathogens. According to standard infection control guidelines, needles and syringes and their contents fall within the critical category of patient contact because they enter the normally sterile vascular space. Medical equipment considered critical should be treated or prepared in a manner that destroys vegetative and spore-forming microbes. The simplest way to e

Disease burden of psittacosis in the Netherlands.

Psittacosis (infection with Chlamydia psittaci) can have diverse presentations in humans, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe systemic disease. Awareness of psittacosis and its presentations are low among clinicians and the general public. Therefore, underdiagnosis and thereby underestimation of the incidence and public health importance of psittacosis is very likely. We used the methodology developed for the Burden of communicable diseases in Europe toolkit of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, to construct a model to estimate disease burden in disability-adjust

Designer adjuvants for enhancing the efficacy of infectious disease and cancer vaccines based on suppression of regulatory T cell induction.

Live attenuated or inactivated bacteria and viruses have formed the basis of many successful vaccines, including those that have eliminated smallpox and have almost eliminated poliovirus. The whole virus or bacteria approach remains the most effective means of generating protective immunity by vaccination. However, these vaccines can be associated with mild to severe side effects, such as that observed with the whole cell pertussis vaccine. Furthermore, rare cases of vaccine-associated disease can result from reversion of an attenuated virus to the virulent form, such as that reported with the

Public health considerations in human consumption of wild game.

The role of a few microorganisms, like Brucella and Mycobacterium and certain parasites of food animals, in causing human disease has been recognized for a hundred years. By the 1990s, other microorganisms derived from food animals were recognized as contributing to human illness. Handling and/or consumption of wild game may result in human exposure to novel microorganisms; these unrecognized or unknown agents or diseases in wild species may cross into humans and cause "new" diseases with which we are not familiar.

[The psychological behavior of patients in danger of infection under conditions of isolation].

36 patients with agranulocytosis among them 29 cancer patients were treated in a Life Island (LI) during totally 990 days and were studied for their psychological reactions. Another group of 9 patients among them 6 leukemia patients were treated in reverse isolation (RI) during 578 days. The psychological reactions of these patients were equally studied and were compared with those of the first group. Main reactions to the isolation in the LI were signs of deprivation, specially movement deprivation, as well as aggressive and regressive behaviour. The patients in RI showed on the other hand se

Formation of the Asian Rabies Control Network (ARACON): A common approach towards a global good.

The drive towards the worldwide elimination of dog-mediated human rabies by 2030 is the first step towards the ultimate goal of dog rabies elimination - as dogs account for more than 99% of human rabies cases globally - and has gained considerable momentum since this resolution was taken at a global meeting in Geneva in December 2015. For dog rabies-endemic countries and regions, dedicated regional networks may offer unique opportunities to take advantage of this global momentum. Towards this goal, the Pan-African Rabies Control Network (PARACON) was created in 2015, and the past year has seen

Neglected tropical diseases of Oceania: review of their prevalence, distribution, and opportunities for control.

Among Oceania's population of 35 million people, the greatest number living in poverty currently live in Papua New Guinea (PNG), Fiji, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands. These impoverished populations are at high risk for selected NTDs, including Necator americanus hookworm infection, strongyloidiasis, lymphatic filariasis (LF), balantidiasis, yaws, trachoma, leprosy, and scabies, in addition to outbreaks of dengue and other arboviral infections including Japanese encephalitis virus infection. PNG stands out for having the largest number of cases and highest prevalence for most of these NTDs. H
