The principle of the latex agglutination technique was applied on the serodiagnosis of Chagas' disease. The latex particles coated with antigen from Trypanosoma cruzi are agglutinated by antibodies against T. cruzi in the serum of patients suffering thereof. In 11600 comparative determinations worked out mainly in a number of South American laboratories, the sensitivity of this test was compared with xenodiagnosis, CF, IFT and IHA. The latex Chagas test shows a mean coincidence of 90% with xenodiagnosis, 88% with CF, 75% with IFT, and 83% with IHA. The results indicate that the test is a usefu

Proteins obtained from membranes of PNH erythrocytes and of red cells treated with 2-aminoethylisothiouronium bromide (AET) following lysis in acidified serum (Ham's test) were compared by sodium dodecylsulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The peptide patterns were identical, providing support that AET-treated red cells afford a suitable experimental substitute for PNH red cells in studies involving complement fixation.

Six techniques were compared to find the most suitable method for determining the cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibody status of blood donors. Five hundred and ninety-six random sera were tested by immunofluorescence (IF), complement fixation (CFT), two enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), a commercial indirect haemagglutination test (IHA)--used as supplied, and a locally devised micromodification of the same IHA test. Five hundred and thirty-five sera shared total agreement of results by all tests. The ELISA tests were the most discordant with other methods (10.5% discordancies both positive
