The latest achievements in the pharmacotherapy of gambling disorder.

Gambling disorder (GD) is becoming increasingly prevalent both among adults and adolescents. Unfortunately, this disorder is largely underestimated, while it can still lead to serious social and personal consequences, including criminal behavior or suicide attempts. In the past, the only means of treating gambling were psychobehavioral therapies. Nowadays, this disorder could also respond to many drugs from different classes such as opioid antagonists, serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors, mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotics or glutamatergic agents. This review presents current pharma

The impact of mental health disorders in pregnancy on obstetric and neonatal outcomes: A narrative review.

Perinatal psychiatry has gained increasing attention as a public health priority, given the high prevalence and burden of mental health conditions during pregnancy and the postpartum period. While research has predominantly focused on depressive disorders, growing evidence suggests that a broader range of psychiatric conditions may significantly influence obstetric and neonatal outcomes. Unlike previous works primarily centered on perinatal depression, this narrative review provides an integrated and transdiagnostic overview of perinatal psychiatric disorders - including mood, anxiety, psychot

EMDR as Treatment Option for Conditions Other Than PTSD: A Systematic Review.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The technique is known to facilitate reprocessing of maladaptive memories that are thought to be central to this pathology. Here we investigate if EMDR therapy can be used in other conditions. We conducted a systematic literature search on PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science. We searched for published empirical findings on EMDR, excluding those centred on trauma and PTSD, published up to 2020. The results were classified by psychiatric categories. Ninety articles met our

The personal motif in naturalistic case study research: developing "innerstandings" in woman's compulsive behaviour.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to show case study research focused on persons as a case and our personal engagement with the case can improve our innerstandings and understanding of person-centred care. Method: We present the methodology and epistemology of naturalistic case study research and illuminate this approach with the case study of Ellen, a young, Dutch, white-middle class woman with a compulsive disorder. We combine naturalistic case study research with the personal narratives of those involved in the research, including ourselves, and interpreted through a feminist and gend

Comorbid mental disorders during long-term course in a nationwide cohort of patients with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Comorbid mental disorders in anorexia nervosa during long-term course require detailed studies. METHOD: This matched cohort study was based on nationwide Danish register data of all patients born 1961-2008 with a first-time ICD-10 diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN) between 1994 and 2018 at age 8-32 and matched controls taken from all individuals without an eating disorder (ED). For nine categories of non-eating mental disorders, time from date of first AN-diagnosis (inclusion date) to time of first diagnosis, accounting for censoring, was studied by use of time-stratified Cox model

[DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION FOR OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER: CASE REPORT OF THE FIRST OCD PATIENT IN ISRAEL].

Treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is considered a severe psychiatric disorder that causes severe functional decline. In the past, these patients were treated by selective ablation of neuronal pathways related to the pathophysiology of OCD. Deep brain stimulation is an effective and safe treatment alternative that enables reversible changes in neural circuits and reduces OCD symptoms. In this paper we present the outcome of a treatment-resistant OCD patient who underwent deep brain stimulation procedure for the first time in Israel. The patient has achieved a significant d

Hypnotherapeutic management of pediatric and adolescent trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania in children is regularly described as analogous to a habit disorder. As such, it is thought at times to be benign in a manner analogous to habits such as thumb sucking and nail biting. It is also considered by some to be an obsessive-compulsive disorder, to be more recalcitrant to intervention, and to be more socially disabling than simple habits, particularly when persistence and intensity eventuate in obvious alopecia. This report presents five cases of trichotillomania in which self-monitoring, dissociative hypnotic techniques, and self-hypnosis (relaxation/mental imagery)

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in ACTG1-associated Baraitser-Winter cerebrofrontofacial syndrome.

Symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may rarely occur in the context of genetic syndromes. So far, an association between obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) and ACTG1-associated Baraitser-Winter cerebrofrontofacial syndrome has not been described as yet. A thoroughly phenotyped patient with OCS and ACTG1-associated Baraitser-Winter cerebrofrontofacial syndrome is presented. The 25-year-old male patient was admitted to in-patient psychiatric care due to OCD. A whole-exome sequencing analysis was initiated as the patient also showed an autistic personality structure, below average in

Effectiveness and safety of neuroablation for severe and treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several neuroablative procedures are available for severe and treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but limited knowledge about their relative clinical advantages and disadvantages poses obstacles for treatment decision-making. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Knowledge and the Cochrane Library for reports up to February 2019. We reviewed the literature on the effectiveness (assessed using the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale [Y-BOCS]) and safety of various neuroablative interventions for severe and treatment-resistant OCD. RESULTS: We i

Unmet needs of the patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling mental disorder with the chronic and difficult course. The disorder is accompanied by numerous limitations in personal and interpersonal functioning. OCD decreases the quality of life and the chance to maintain relationships and professional status. The patients with OCD often experience a severe disabling course of the disorder. Even the individuals, who follow treatment advice, are often still highly symptomatic. In the last decade, the concept of the needs has been assessed as an extent of the traditional outcome evaluation in o

Personality subtyping and bulimia nervosa: psychopathological and genetic correlates.

BACKGROUND: There is empirical evidence suggesting that individuals with bulimia nervosa vary considerably in terms of psychiatric co-morbidity and personality functioning. In this study, latent profile analysis was used to attempt to identify clusters of bulimic subjects based on psychiatric co-morbidity and personality. METHOD: A total of 178 women with bulimia nervosa or a subclinical variant of bulimia nervosa completed a series of self-report inventories of co-morbid psychopathology and personality, and also provided a buccal smear sample for genetic analyses. RESULTS: Three clusters of

[The transition of deep brain stimulation from disease specific to symptom specific indications].

The success of chronic deep brain stimulation (DBS) and electrical neuro-network modulation (ENM) to address neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders has led the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and also other worldwide regulatory agencies to grant approval for the use of DBS in specific disorders. In the United States, DBS is FDA approved for the treatment of advanced Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor (ET), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and for dystonia. OCD and dystonia have been approved under a mechanism referred to as a humanitarian device exemption (HDE). However, a
