Oesophagitis-induced changes in capsaicin-sensitive tachykininergic pathways in the ferret lower oesophageal sphincter.

Prolonged oesophageal acidification may impair lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) function in reflux disease. The aim of this study was to investigate aspects of altered LOS innervation in a model of oesophagitis. Oesophagitis was induced by acid (HCl, 0.15 M) and pepsin (0.1% w/v) infusions in anaesthetized ferrets. LOS muscle strip responses to the following stimuli were measured in vitro from control and acid/pepsin-treated ferrets: electrical field stimulation (EFS; 1-50 Hz), potassium chloride KCl; 20 mM), substance P, [beta-Ala8]-neurokinin A 4-10, [Sar9, Met (O2)11]-substance P (all 10(-

Reduction of Serum Substance P and Beta Endorphin in Herpes Zoster After Erector Spinae Plane Block.

BACKGROUND: Acute herpes zoster (AHZ) is caused by the reactivation of varicella-zoster virus. This reactivation results in peripheral nerve fiber damage and triggers an immune reaction, which leads to the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). In the skin of patients affected with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), high levels of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) have been found. OBJECTIVES: The primary goal of this study was to compare changes in serum inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8) and pain neurotransmitters (substance P, CGRP) with those of a

Microbially mediated transport and temporal community responses of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate under variably saturated conditions.

Understanding of the transport and retention of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) precursors in the unsaturated zone remains limited, particularly regarding the coupled effects of hydrological variability and microbial processes under variably saturated conditions. This study investigated the transport behavior of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS), a representative PFAS precursor, through variably saturated columns packed with sand or soil. Quantification of retention was combined with solid-phase characterization and microbial community sequencing. An instrumented apparatus was used to col

Evaluating the evidence for repressed memory recovery in psychedelic contexts.

RATIONALE: Reports of resurfaced repressed memories during psychedelic experiences have circulated for decades and still emerge today. However, the veracity of repressed memories remains debated, and the mechanisms through which psychedelics might recover alleged repressed memories are unclear. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aimed to provide an overview of the literature on repressed memory in the context of psychedelics. It examined how repressed memory was defined, which substances were predominantly discussed, which mechanisms were proposed to explain their effects, and whether these mech

Doping Control Analysis of Methylsulfonylmethane in Horses.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), also known as dimethyl sulfone, is a naturally occurring sulphur-containing compound that can be found in plants, animals and humans. MSM can also be a metabolite of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Due to their anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, both MSM and DMSO are prohibited substances in horseracing. As both substances are naturally occurring, their misuse in horses is controlled by International Residue Limits (IRL) of 1200 and 15 μg/mL, respectively, in horse urine as established by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities. The elimination of

The shame spiral of addiction: Negative self-conscious emotion and substance use.

BACKGROUND: The bidirectional associations between negative self-conscious emotions such as shame and guilt and substance use are poorly understood. Longitudinal research is needed to examine the causes, consequences, and moderators of negative self-conscious emotions in people who use substances. METHODS: Using parallel process latent growth curve modeling, we assessed bidirectional associations between shame and guilt and substance use (i.e., number of days in the past 30 used stimulants, alcohol to intoxication, other substances, or injected drugs) as well as the moderating role of positiv

Evidence for the use of "medical marijuana" in psychiatric and neurologic disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis is listed as a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, meaning the US federal government defines it as an illegal drug that has high potential for abuse and no established medical use; however, half of the states in the nation have enacted "medical marijuana" (MM) laws. Clinicians must be aware of the evidence for and against the use of MM in their patients who may consider using this substance. METHODS: A PubMed database search was performed using the text string: "Cannabis"[Mesh] OR "Marijuana Abuse"[Mesh] OR "Medical Marijuana"[Mesh] OR "Mar…

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for multiple chemical sensitivity: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a condition characterized by recurrent, self-reported symptoms from multiple organ systems, attributable to exposure to a wide range of chemically unrelated substances at low levels. The pathophysiology is unknown, and affected individuals generally favor avoidance of the symptom triggering substances as a coping strategy. The impact of MCS on daily life may thus be severe. An intervention that may effectively reduce the impact of MCS, alleviate the symptoms and the psychological distress associated with the condition is therefore highly neede

Timing of alcohol and other drug use and sexual risk behaviors among unmarried adolescents and young adults.

CONTEXT: Although alcohol and drug use by young people has been associated with sexual risk behavior in some research, detailed data are lacking on the timing of substance use in relationship to sexual risk-taking. METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional data on 7,441 unmarried young people aged 14-22 from the 1992 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (household supplement) were used in the analysis. Alcohol and other drug use at last sexual intercourse, substance use in the past 30 days (recent use), the number of different substances ever used (lifetime use) and age at initiation of alcohol use are examined her

An analysis of mutagens in the contents of the biliary tract in pancreaticobiliary maljunction.

A reflux of pancreatic juice into the biliary tract due to pancreaticobiliary malfunction has been considered to be an important factor in the development of biliary tract carcinogenesis. It is known that the contents of the biliary tract contain not only activated pancreatic enzymes but also certain mutagens. The purpose of this study was thus to isolate and identify such mutagenic substances. A 1:1 mixture of the control bile and pancreatic juice was mixed with bovine enterokinase (10 mg/ml), and the mixture was incubated at 37 degrees C for 12 h. The mixture was demonstrated to be reproduci
