Congenital alopecia, psychomotor retardation, convulsions in two sibs of a consanguineous marriage.

A family is described in which two sibs of a consanguineous marriage have alopecia, convulsions, EEG anomalies and mental retardation. Although the children have significant features resembling those described by Moynahan, this syndrome appears to be different in the mode of inheritance and in other aspects (sensorineural hearing loss in the male, syndactyly in the female).

Relative significance of isolated infantile convulsions as a primary cause of focal epilepsy.

Isolated infantile convulsions were noted in 206 patients (13%) of 1,572 patients who underwent cortical resection for medically refractory focal epilepsy at the Montreal Neurological Institute over the period 1928 through 1977. In 59 patients (29% of the 206), the isolated infantile convulsion was associated with an identifiable febrile systemic or neural illness. In 54 patients (26%), there was a definite history of cerebral birth injury in addition to the isolated infantile convulsions. Twenty patients (10%) had some other potential etiological factor for the later development of seizures,

Rectal administration of diazepam in solution in the acute treatment of convulsions in infants and children.

In a prospective study 44 children, aged 6 months to 5 years, admitted to hospital with febrile convulsions or epilepsy, were treated with diazepam in solution administered rectally during 59 generalised attacks. Rectal administration of diazepam was effective in the acute treatment of convulsions in 80% of cases. In 10% the treatment failed, whereas diazepam administered intravenously had prompt effect; another 10% of the convulsions wer resistant to diazepam, irrespective of the route of administration. The therapeutic effect was significantly correlated with the duration of convulsions befo

Convulsions subarachnoid haemorrhage and death following myelography with meglumine iothalamate 280.

A case is presented of convulsions, subarachnoid haemorrhage and death following the use of meglumine iothalamate 280 for myelography. The patient was suffering from sciatica but had no pre-existing symptoms of other neurological disease. This case dramatically illustrates the dangers inherent in the use of meglumine iothalamate 280 for myelography.

[The effect of propanidid in patients with an increased tendency to cerebral convulsions (author's transl)].

In view of the observation of tonic-clonic convulsions after the use of Propanidid in certan patients, a study was undertaken of the effects of this drug (7 mg/kg) on the EEG of 2 volunteers with a known history of epilepsy. Both subjects developed tonic-clonic convulsions and showed typical alterations of the EEG pattern even before the onset of hyperventilation. These EEG alterations were producible also during complete relaxation. The convulsions were easily stopped by the administration of short-acting barbiturates. Similar observations reported in the literature are briefly discussed. The

Denervation hyperpathia: a convulsive syndrome of the spinal cord responsive to carbamazepine therapy.

Two cases of denervation hyperpathia that responded well to treatment with carbamazepine are presented. A theoretical relation of this disorder to trigeminal neuralgia and focal seizures is emphasized in the light of experimental data and clinical characteristics.
