We present our experience (at the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) with the management of the trachomatous eyelid disease. Four major eyelid complications: cicatricial entropion, eyelid retraction, secondary blepharospasm and brow ptosis, are described and their management outlined. Two infants with incessant tachycardia uncontrolled by multiple drug treatment were thought initially to have supraventricular tachycardia. Our current surgical treatment for threshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is based upon three concepts which emerged from morphologic and biochemical study of 250 pairs of whole eye donations obtained over a ten year period. 1) Spindle cells normally migrate and canalize to form inner retinal vessels, but when stressed, spindle cells secrete angiogenic factors. The results of 64 operations of cataract in dogs applying the operating microscope are presented in the paper. The dogs were divided into 4 groups according to the type of cataract: senile, symptomatic, diabetic and toxic. A 44-year-old man had a blind painful right eye secondary to neovascular glaucoma. Cyclocryotherapy was performed because medical therapy was ineffective in lowering the intraocular pressure or reducing the pain. The eye became comfortable, but 5 months later vision decreased in the left eye. Examination revealed a marked posterior uveitis suggestive of sympathetic ophthalmia. Enucleation of the right eye and corticosteroid therapy were effective in eliminating inflammation in the left eye. Histopathologic examination of the exciting right eye revealed classic signs of sympathetic ophthalmia.

Nine eyes were treated by cryotherapy applied circularly over a large area: 4 rows in each quadrant, from 3 mm behind the limbus to the equator, with 4 burns in each row. Freezing time was 10 seconds. Clinical observations after an average of 19.4 months and histologic findings are communicated.

Gonioscopic changes after cyclocryocoagulation are reported in 4 patients with angle-closure glaucoma resistant to all forms of therapy. During cryoapplication frozen aqueous humor was observed in the chamber angle near the treated area. Widening of the angle followed in the same place. Possible causes of this change are reported.

A retrospective study of 36 second eyes with cataract, who have undergone prophylactic retinocryocoagulation prior to cataract extraction, is presented. All 36 patients suffered an aphakic retinal detachment in the first eye in the past. Postoperative complications included iritis, transient cycloplegia and retinal hemorrhages; two patients developed retinal tears following cataract surgery. The authors report on the results of cyclocryotherapy of the ciliary body applied in 79 eyes with secondary glaucoma of various etiology. In 40% of the cases regulation of intraocular pressure and freedom from pain were achieved during an eleven-month follow-up. The results were remarkably favorable in cases of neovascular glaucoma (regulation of IOP in 50%) and secondary glaucoma following iridocyclitis and intraocular hemorrhages, which usually have a very poor prognosis.

Fourteen patients whose post-herpetic neuralgia could not be alleviated by conventional methods were treated with cryocautery using a stick of solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) applied directly to the hyperesthetic skin areas of the cutaneous scars. Follow-up evaluation revealed that 5 of 14 subjects maintained excellent pain relief and another 5 subjects showed good relief.
