Arachnoid cysts are benign developmental collections of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). They constitute approximately 1% of intracranial masses. The cerebellopontine angle (CPA) arachnoid cysts are rare and often asymptomatic. The onset of symptoms and signs is usually due to the compression of the brain, cranial nerves and obstruction of CSF circulation. The major clinical symptoms for CPA arachnoid cysts were reported as headache, ataxia and 8(th) cranial nerve palsy. We report a patient with a CPA arachnoid cyst. He presented with cranial nerve palsies and mirror movements found in upper extremi

We present a case of peroneal nerve palsy which occurred 12 years after primary total knee arthroplasty as a result of extensive tibial osteolysis. The tibial osteolytic cyst extended through a cortical defect in the proximal tibia into the anterolateral compartment of the leg causing compressive neuropathy of the peroneal nerve. Imaging included radiographs, CT scan and MRI. At revision surgery, the tibial component was found loose with significant proximal tibial osteolysis. The cyst in the leg was decompressed through the cortical defect in the proximal tibia and analysis of cystic fluid re

Prostatic utricle cyst is one of the uncommon conditions and only a few cases have been reported. We present a case of unusually large prostatic utricle cyst in a 13- year- old male. He presented with burning urination and post-void dribbling of urine. A cystic mass was felt on digital per rectal examination. Ultrasound pelvis revealed a well-defined midline cystic mass posterior to the urinary bladder. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pelvis demonstrated fluid containing cystic lesion communicating with posterior urethra. Surgical resection of the cyst was performed through

A 52-year-old man was admitted to Matsudo City Hospital because of an anterior mediastinal mass. One month prior, when he suddenly suffered chest pain, computed tomography (CT) showed a 4 x 3 cm mass in the chest. On admission, the symptom disappeared. However, chest CT revealed rapid enlargement of the mass to 10 x 6 cm. Based on the CT findings, we suspected a tumor. Therefore, we performed a thymothymectomy. The mass, measuring 12 x 8 x 6 cm, contained a solid tumor and a fluid-filled cyst. Pathology showed a thymoma and a multilocular thymic cyst. We speculated that hemorrhage from the thy

A 47-year-old man with a medical history of nephrolithiasis of the right kidney presented with abdominal pain at the level of the right hip. Ultrasonography showed an anechoic area with irregular contours in the lower pole of the right kidney, where a previous ultrasound scan had signalled the presence of a large cyst. Abdominal computed tomography revealed the presence of a fluid area within the lower pole of the right kidney. Subsequent ultrasonography showed progressive reduction of the anechoic area, which was associated with gradual reduction of the pain. The case was diagnosed as spontan

So-called cutaneous cysts are extremely frequent tumours that could need surgical attention. Most of the time, due to their quite pathognomonic clinical presentation and indolent course, they are simply enucleated. Often, the clinical diagnosis is easily confirmed at surgery by the typical appearance of a cystic formation filled with a creamy fluid. It is frequent for such "typical" lesions to escape histological investigation following removal. However, some mimicking lesions could also be found as "cutaneous cysts" and have quite different prognoses. This paper present five patients with suc

BACKGROUND: Hormone production is a characteristic associated with the presence of solid tumors in the ovary. We present a case of a solitary ovarian cyst producing large amounts of testosterone and presenting with rapid onset of hirsutism.
CASE: A woman presented approximately 6 months postpartum with irregular menses and rapid onset of hirsutism. Laboratory and radiologic evaluation indicated an ovarian cyst as the source. On removal, the cyst was found to have high amounts of testosterone in its fluid and the surrounding stroma had nests of luteinized cells.
CONCLUSION: The chronic anovul

To suppress cyst formation in 42 brain tumors, 32P has been stereotactically instilled in doses calculated to deliver 20,000-40,000 rad to the cyst wall, assuming uniform dispersal of the radioisotope. However, samples of cyst fluid obtained at varying intervals after injection showed lower than expected activity levels, suggesting early 'plating' of 32P. To accommodate this phenomenon, a surface-area-dependent dosimetric calculation is compared with a volume-dependent calculation which assumes uniform dispersal. These two approaches represent lower and upper extremes. It appears that in small…

Recurrent abdominal pain in the left fossa often mimicking attacks of subileus is described in a woman aged 48 with extensive adhesions caused by multiple surgical procedures. Repeated examinations with conventional abdominal radiography and barium meals were negative with regard to mechanical intestinal obstruction. A cystic lesion varying in size from 2 to 8 cm in diameter was seen adjacent to the left ovary on repeat US examinations and also on CT. Pain episodes were sometimes correlated to increasing size of the lesion which was finally thought to be either a peritoneal inclusion cyst (flu

A 70-year-old woman was referred to our cardiology department for the management of dyspnoea. Cardiovascular examination revealed a loud P2, with no sign of right-sided heart failure. Chest X-ray showed a convex left medium cardiac border and a double contour along the right cardiac border. Transthoracic echocardiogram revealed a cystic mass attached to the right ventricle apex. Computed tomography scan showed cyst with fluid density on the apex of the right ventricle; and a honeycomb-like aspect cyst with partial occlusion in the left pulmonary artery. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revea

Spinal intradural arachnoid cysts (SIACs) are cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sacs formed by arachnoid membranes. They may be idiopathic or acquired. Treatment is resection, fenestration, or cyst drainage. A 41-year-old female patient presented with myelopathy symptoms and complaints. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a T6-T10 dorsal intradural arachnoid cyst. A T6-T10 laminectomy was performed and an arachnoid cyst was excised under surgical microscope. The cyst contained a clear liquid that was surrounded by a transparent membrane. At 7 weeks postoperatively, the patient experienced severe

Clinical manifestations of empty sella syndrome include hypopituitarism cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, headache, and visual abnormalities. A 21-year-old woman reported a 6-month history of worsening vision 3 years after decompression of a sellar-suprasellar Rathke cleft cyst. Her magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well-defined recurrent cyst in the sellar-suprasellar region causing chiasmatic compression. She underwent an endonasal, endoscopic decompression of the cyst, with subsequent improvement in her vision. A postoperative computed tomography confirmed good decompression of the cy

Intracranial arachnoid cysts are fluid-filled cavities that arise within the cranial arachnoid, representing approximately 1%-2% of all intracranial lesions among the paediatric population. We present the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with instability and episodes of ocular deviation. A computed tomography scan (CT scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed a suprasellar cyst and obstructive hydrocephalus. At birth a transfontanellar ultrasound was normal. The cyst underwent endoscopic fenestration with complete remission of symptoms. In the review of the literat

A 29-year-old woman had a colobomatous multiloculated cystic left eyeball. None of the normal structures of the globe were discernable by clinical examination. The cyst had been present since birth and had not grown in size since early childhood. Another patient, a man of 73, had an intraocular colobomatous cyst occupying the temporal half of the large choroidal bridge coloboma in his left eye. This cyst was partially filled with shimmering crystalline fluid. This patient had bilateral open-angle glaucoma which had caused advanced damage to the optic nerve in the structurally normal right eye.

Investigations in a patient with a multilocular cyst of kidney included urography, ultrasonography and computed tomography. Urography images showed a mass occupying the lower half of the left kidney with a lacunar image of pelvis, the association of these two elements suggesting a possible cancer of kidney. Ultrasound and computed tomography imaging demonstrated the fluid nature of the mass with absent partitioning. Findings were compared with data from the pathologic specimen which showed a main unilocular cyst with multiple satellite smaller cysts and a thick intrapyelic formation composed o

A lateral view of the knee in 90 degree flexion can reveal popliteal cysts which do not show on routine arthrography. Flexion causes transfer of intra-articular fluid to the posterior portion of the joint space, lowering pressure within the cyst and allowing it to fill with contrast media.

PURPOSE: An unusual case of a giant ovarian cyst was successfully anaesthetized with a combination of epidural followed by general anaesthesia. The method was chosen to avoid circulatory depression and re-expansion pulmonary oedema in removal of a giant tumour in a woman who did not understand the nature of her disease.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 58-yr-old woman (107.6 kg, 150 cm and abdominal girth: 163.5 cm) was admitted for removal of a giant ovarian cyst. There was gross-pitting oedema of both legs and an elevated diaphragm but no pleural effusion. She did not understand the severity of her dis

A 60-year-old woman, who had been receiving chronic hemodialysis for chronic renal failure due to polycystic disease for 7 years, was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaints of right flank pain and high-grade fever on February 3, 1986. She had a family history of polycystic kidney disease and her elder sister has been undergoing chronic hemodialysis. The patient has had repeated episodes of urinary tract infection. The right markedly distended kidney was palpated with severe tenderness, and the performance status was poor. Computerized tomography showed the right kidney enlarging be

A very rare case of epidermoid cyst of the left temporomandibular join (TMJ) after a dermal graft inserted as the interposing material in the surgical correction of TMJ ankylosis is presented. Two years after the surgery, a cystic lesion the size of a walnut was observed in the TMJ region. The cyst contained an odorless, straw-coloured mucoid fluid and a wall lined by stratified squamous epithelium containing orthokeratin. It contained no hair follicles or sweat glands.
