Overactive bladder and bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis in primary Sjögren's syndrome patients: A nationwide population-based study.

To investigate the risks of overactive bladder (OAB) and bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) patients. A nationwide, population-based cohort study was conducted using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. From 2001 to 2010, participants with newly diagnosed pSS were recognized as the study group. In addition, a comparison cohort of non-pSS participants was matched for age, gender, and initial diagnosis date. Risks of developing OAB and BPS/IC in pSS patients of different age, sex, and various therapeutic strategies

Epstein-Barr Virus as a Potential Etiology of Persistent Bladder Inflammation in Human Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is characterized by bladder inflammation without bacterial infection. Although viral infection is a potential etiological cause, few studies have been reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bladder specimens were obtained from patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and from patients with stress urinary incontinence as controls. Bladder specimens were tested for Epstein-Barr encoded RNAs by in situ hybridization and for Epstein-Barr DNA by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, serology and immunohistochemical stainin

Risk of Urinary Tract Carcinoma among Subjects with Bladder Pain Syndrome/Interstitial Cystitis: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the subsequent risks of urinary tract cancers among individuals with bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC), and gender differences, as well as the effect of associated comorbidity using a population-based administrative database in Taiwan. PATIENTS AND METHODS: BPS/IC subjects (10192) and their age- and sex-matched non-BPS/IC control subjects (30576), who had no previous upper urinary tract cancer (UUC), bladder cancer (BC), and prostate cancer (PC), subsequently developed these disorders from the recruited date between 2002 and 2008 and the end of fol

Molecular pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis based on microRNA expression signature: miR-320 family-regulated molecular pathways and targets.

Interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as bladder pain syndrome, is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the bladder. The symptoms of IC vary, including feeling an urgent need for immediate urination and of needing to urinate often, as well as bladder or pelvic pain. Despite its high incidence, no molecular diagnostic methods are available for IC, and the molecular pathogenesis is unknown. microRNAs (miRNA) can regulate expression of RNA transcripts in cells and aberrant expression of miRNAs is associated with several human diseases. Here, we investigated the molecular pathogenesis of I

O'Leary-Sant Symptom Index Predicts the Treatment Outcome for OnabotulinumtoxinA Injections for Refractory Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome.

Although intravesical injection of onabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT-A) has been proved promising in treating patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), what kind of patients that may benefit from this treatment remains unclear. This study investigated the predictors for a successful treatment outcome. Patients with IC/BPS who failed conventional treatments were enrolled to receive intravesical injection of 100 U of BoNT-A immediately followed by hydrodistention. Variables such as O'Leary-Sant symptom and problem indexes (ICSI and ICPI), pain visual analogue scale (VAS), functi

Intravesical treatment of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis: from the conventional regimens to the novel botulinum toxin injections.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) includes interstitial cystitis (IC) and is often used as a synonym of it (i.e., BPS/IC). It is associated with lower urinary tract symptoms as well as with negative cognitive, behavioral, sexual and/or emotional consequences. Unfortunately, none of the numerous existing oral and intravesical treatments have been effective for all of the BPS subtypes and therefore relevant research is ongoing. AREAS COVERED: In this review, the authors analyze the existing literature for the intravesical treatment of BPS/IC with focus on the novel administration of bot

Increased risk of ischemic stroke among women with bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis: a cohort study from Taiwan.

AIM: Vascular factors are proposed in the etiology of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC). In this study, we investigated the risk of stroke among women following a diagnosis of BPS/IC over 3 years of follow-up, compared to controls without a BPS/IC diagnosis. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used data retrieved from the Taiwan "Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000." We identified 847 women who received a diagnosis of BPS/IC between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2008 (study group) and 4,235 comparison women (women without a BPS/IC diagnosis matched on age an

Obstructive sleep apnea increases the risk of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis: a population-based matched-cohort study.

AIMS: Previous studies indicated a possible association between bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) and sleep disorders including sleep abnormalities with delayed onset of sleep, waking up before needed, and snoring. Nevertheless, no previous study has reported the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and BPS/IC. In this retrospective cohort study, we examined the risk of BPS/IC among subjects with OSA during a 3-year follow-up in Taiwan using a population-based dataset. METHODS: This study comprised 2,940 study subjects with OSA, and 29,400 randomly selected com

Bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis ESSIC type 3C: high expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase in inflammatory cells.

OBJECTIVE: Bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) includes a heterogeneous collection of underlying pathological conditions. Compared to the classic IC with a Hunner lesion, now denominated ESSIC type 3C, the non-Hunner type of BPS/IC appears different in a number of respects. In a previous study, measuring luminal nitric oxide (NO) in the bladder of patients with BPS/IC, it was reported that all patients with ESSIC type 3C had high levels of NO. The aim of the present study was to investigate the source of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and thereby the cellular origin of

Individual receptor profiling as a novel tool to support diagnosis of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC).

PURPOSE: Dysregulation of neurotransmitter receptors may contribute to bladder overactivity (OAB) symptoms. To address the question whether specific receptor expression patterns are associated with bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC), we examined the expression of muscarinic, purinergic and histamine receptors in the detrusor. METHODS: Detrusor receptor expression was investigated in bladder biopsies of female BPS/IC patients (n = 44; age 60.64 ± 13.78, mean ± SD) and carcinoma patients (n = 11; age 58.91 ± 12.72) undergoing cystectomy. Protein expression of muscarinic (M2, M

Elevated urinary levels and urothelial expression of hepatocarcinoma-intestine-pancreas/pancreatitis-associated protein in patients with interstitial cystitis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the pathophysiology of interstitial cystitis (IC), we examined urinary levels and urothelial expression of human orthologue of pancreatitis-associated protein (PAP) III, namely, hepatocarcinoma-intestine-pancreas (HIP)/PAP, in patients with IC. We have previously shown that PAP III is expressed with increased frequency in the bladder urothelium in a rat cystitis model (Takahara Y, et al. J Urol. 2008;179:1603-1609). METHODS: HIP/PAP levels in the urine from patients with IC were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and HIP/PAP expression in the bladder tis

Urine markers do not predict biopsy findings or presence of bladder ulcers in interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome.

PURPOSE: We tested for associations between urine markers, bladder biopsy features and bladder ulcers in interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were 72 patients with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome undergoing bladder distention and biopsy. Urine was collected before the procedure. Urine marker levels were correlated with biopsy and cystoscopic findings. Patients with no previous interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome treatments (47) were analyzed separately from previously treated patients (25). RESULTS: For untreated patients u

Absence of bacterial and viral DNA in bladder biopsies from patients with interstitial cystitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

PURPOSE: We examined bladder biopsies from women with interstitial cystitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (IC/CPPS) for the presence of bacterial and viral DNA sequences using polymerase chain reaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bladder biopsies were taken during cystoscopy from patients under investigation for IC/CPPS, or controls undergoing colposuspension for stress incontinence. Biopsies were snap frozen to -70C. After DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using specific primers for the hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase gene confirmed the presence of human DNA. PCR for
