Listeria monocytogenes was isolated in two neonates born consecutively in the same hospital in France. The isolates had indistinguishable pulsed-field electrophoresis profiles. Retrospective epidemiological investigations found no evidence of a food-borne or environmental source. Infection control protocols and decontamination processes were in accordance with standard recommendations. The timing of onset of these infections within the same maternity unit, and the similarity of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles suggests cross-infection of L. monocytogenes between the two neonates.

In gastrointestinal detoxication, three methods are possible: ipecac induced emesis, gastric lavage and administration of activated charcoal. The method of treatment predominantly used in the Netherlands is gastric lavage in combination with activated charcoal. Published evidence suggests that activated charcoal not preceded by gastric emptying is preferred. Additional advantages of using activated charcoal alone as the method of choice for gastrointestinal decontamination are patient friendliness, low cost and time saving because quick intervention by general practitioners is possible.

A review is presented on the biology of the causative agent, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis and therapy of canine Sarcoptes scabiei infestation. This survey includes also clinical data of the period 1978-1986 in the Small Animal Hospital, Munich Veterinary Faculty. Several skin scrapings are usually necessary for diagnosis. For therapy application of acaricides once a week, altogether at least three times is sufficient. Simultaneously a decontamination of the dog's surroundings should be carried out.

The virus of Creutzfeldt Jakob disease differs from conventional viruses in its extraordinary resistance to commonly used physical and chemical methods of decontamination. Autoclaving the virus for 1 hour at 121 degrees C and 2 atmospheres pressure is the most certain means for achieving total inactivation. Exposure to 5 p. 100 hypochlorite for several hours can also totally inactivate the virus, and exposure to phenol or potassium permanganate is probably effective, but as yet insufficiently tested.
