Trichuris nematodes were isolated from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). At first, nematodes were determined using morphological and biometrical methods. Subsequently genomic DNA was isolated and the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 segment from ribosomal DNA (RNA) was amplified and sequenced using PCR techniques. With u sing morphological and biometrical methods, female nematodes were identified as Trichuris globulosa, and the only male was identified as Trichuris ovis. The females were classified into four morphotypes. However, analysis of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) of specimens did not c…

The large American liver fluke, Fascioloides magna - introduced to Europe before 1875 - was the first non-indigenous trematode to be detected in Hungarian cervids in 1995. As the most precious deer population became infected in the Gemenc game reserve a study has been launched to assess the extent and the effect of F. magna infections and to examine the options for the treatment of infected deer populations. Livers of red deer shot during regular hunting were submitted for the survey and were investigated by necropsy for the presence of F. magna and other liver dwelling trematodes. Recovered p…

Deer are important blood hosts for feeding Ixodes ricinus ticks but they do not support transmission of many tick-borne pathogens, so acting as dead-end transmission hosts. Mathematical models show their role as tick amplifiers, but also suggest that they dilute pathogen transmission, thus reducing infection prevalence. Empirical evidence for this is conflicting: experimental plots with deer removal (i.e. deer exclosures) show that the effect depends on the size of the exclosure. Here we present simulations of dynamic models that take into account different tick stages, and several host specie…

Roe deer Capreolus capreolus are among the most important feeding hosts for the sheep tick Ixodes ricinus, thus contributing to the occurrence of tick-borne diseases in Europe. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), which is transmitted by co-feeding of larvae and nymphs on rodents, requires precise climatic conditions to occur. We used roe deer as sentinels for potential circulation of TBE virus in Northern Italy, by examining the association between tick infestation, occurrence of TBE human cases, geographical and climatic parameters. Tick infestation on roe deer, and particularly frequency of co-fe…

The purpose of this study was to assess the sperm motility, the plasma membrane integrity and the morphology of red deer spermatozoa when maintained within epididymides stored for 4 days at 5 degrees C, and to evaluate whether such stored spermatozoa are able to withstand a refrigeration process. Thirty pairs of testes, with attached epididymides, were collected from 30 hunter-killed mature stags (Cervus elaphus hispanicus), and spermatozoa from each one of the pairs were immediately collected in Triladyl medium, evaluated and refrigerated (Control Group). The remaining testes and epididymides…

In February 1991 a severe haemorrhagic disease affected exotic deer aged over six months in the Al-Hofuf area of the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. The morbidity rate was 40 per cent and the case fatality rate was 60 per cent. The clinical signs were high temperature (up to 41.5 degrees C), nasal discharge, slight salivation and lacrimation, congestion of the conjunctivae, torticollis, tremors when trying to stand, recumbency and coma leading to death. Post mortem examination revealed a severe haemorrhagic disease. A virus, serologically related to the bluetongue serogroup, was isolated from …

Ticks were screened for spirochetes and serum samples from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were assayed for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi during 1983-1984. Using fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled rabbit antibodies produced to B. burgdorferi, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, spirochetes were detected in Ixodes dammini (10.5% of 1,193) and Dermacentor albipictus (0.6% of 157) adults from Connecticut, I. dammini nymphs (49.1% of 108) and adults (64.7% of 99) from Armonk, New York, and in I. scapularis (0.4% of 531) and Amblyomma americanum (3.5% of 173) adults from North Caro…

A serologic survey was conducted on 628 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in 1976 and 1979-1980. Tests for antibodies to the etiologic agents of infectious bovine rhinotrancheitis (IBR), parainfluenza 3 (PI3), leptospirosis, and brucellosis produced positive results of 15%, 20%, 3% and 0%, respectively. Adult deer had significantly higher prevalence of antibodies to IBR virus and PI3 virus than fawns. These data provide a basis for monitoring these disease agents in Minnesota's white-tailed deer.

Sections of ovary from plains viscacha, cat, ferret, rabbit, rat, guinea-pig and roe deer have been histochemically processed to demonstrate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) in nervous and non-nervous tissue. The effects of different reproductive states on enzyme activity were observed in some animals. AChE-containing nerves were sparse in rabbit and rat but plentiful in cat and roe deer. Nerves containing BuChE were not detectable in ferret or guinea-pig and were rare in cat. Species variations in the activity and type of enzyme were also found in non-neuronal tis…

Ixodes ricinus is a widespread vector of numerous microorganisms pathogenic to humans and animals in Europe. The risk of exposure to tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) has increased in recent years due to climate change, the conversion of natural green areas to recreational areas, and growing human and animal populations, including pets. Using molecular methods, the prevalence, diversity, and co-occurrence of selected tick-borne microorganisms were assessed in questing I. ricinus collected from recreational areas (n = 409), in ticks feeding on horses (n = 135), and in blood samples from red deer (n =…

In the current era of global change, the emergence of infectious diseases at the wildlife-livestock interface poses risks to biodiversity, agricultural economies, and public health. Driven by anthropogenic influence, increased sharing of resources between wildlife and livestock can promote cross-species transmission, the consequences of which are challenging to predict. Mycoplasma bovis , an economically important bacterial pathogen in cattle, has recently emerged as a threat to other ungulate species. This study reports on a case of M. bovis in an intensively monitored free-ranging mule deer …

Human expansion into wildlife habitats has increased the need to understand human-wildlife interactions, necessitating interdisciplinary approaches to assess zoonotic disease transmission risks and public health impacts. This study integrated fine-grained human foot traffic data with hourly GPS data from 38 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), a species linked to SARS-CoV-2, brucella, and chronic wasting disease, in Howard County, Maryland. We explored spatial and temporal overlap between human and deer activity over 24 months (2018-2019) across a hexagonal tessellation with metrics lik…

Antral stricture is a rare cause of gastric outlet obstruction in infants, typically linked to infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS). We report a case of a 3-month-old male with a 1.5-month history of progressively worsening, nonbilious vomiting. Although initial imaging suggested IHPS, intraoperative findings revealed a sealed antral perforation with dense adhesions, leading to a distal gastrectomy with Billroth I reconstruction. A detailed retrospective history disclosed that the infant had been given deer velvet powder, suspected to have contributed to the perforation and subsequen…

Zoonotic transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease, by presumed consumption of infected beef, has increased awareness of the public health risk associated with prion diseases. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) affects moose, elk, and deer, all of which are frequently consumed by humans. Clear evidence of CWD transmission to humans has not been demonstrated, yet, establishing whether CWD prions are present in muscle tissue preferentially consumed by humans is of increasing interest. Conventional assays including immunohistochemistry (IHC) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent as…

At present, bone-based products are abundant, and the main sources are bovine bone and pig bone, but there are few studies on the development of deer bone as a bone repair material. Deer bone has important osteogenic effects in the theory of traditional Chinese medicine. It is rich in protein, ossein, and a variety of trace elements, with the effect of strengthening tendons and bones. Nanomaterials and their application in the repair of bone defects have become a research hotspot in bone tissue engineering. In this study, nano-deer bone meal (nBM), nano-calcined deer bone meal, and nano-demine…

The gene encoding HIF-2α, Epas1, has experienced a history of natural selection in many high-altitude taxa, but the functional role of mutations in this gene is still poorly understood. We investigated the influence of the high-altitude variant of Epas1 in North American deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) on the control of breathing and carotid body growth during chronic hypoxia. We created hybrids between high- and low-altitude populations of deer mice to disrupt linkages between genetic loci so that the physiological effects of Epas1 alleles (Epas1H and Epas1L , respectively) could be examin…

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (southern cattle fever tick; SCFT), collectively known as cattle-fever ticks (CFTs), are vectors of protozoal parasites (Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis) that cause bovine babesiosis (also known as cattle fever). One traditional strategy for CFT eradication involves the implementation of a "pasture vacation," which involves removing cattle (Bos taurus) from an infested pasture for an extended period of time. However, vacated pastures are often inhabited by wildlife hosts, such as white-tailed deer (WTD; …

Sin Nombre virus (SNV) is the major cause of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in North America, a severe respiratory disease with a high fatality rate. SNV is carried by Peromyscus maniculatus, or deer mice, and human infection occurs following inhalation of aerosolized virus in mouse excreta or secreta, often in peri-domestic settings. Currently there are no FDA approved vaccines or therapeutics for SNV or any other hantaviruses, therefore prevention of infection is an important means of reducing the disease burden of HCPS. One approach for preventing HCPS cases is to prevent the sp…
